Coming Soon... Merlin Micro Fic!
A monthly, low-key prompt challenge aimed at writers to create fics of 500 words or less!
How does this work?
We'll be sharing three prompts on the 15th of each month, and then you'll have until the 14th of the following month to write a fic of 500 words or less for it. For an additional challenge, make it a drabble (100 words exactly)!
Do I have to sign up?
Nope! Just make sure that once you post your fill, you'll tag this blog so that we can reblog it.
Anything that doesn't fly?
Nope! Any ship, any relationship (gen, poly, enemies with benefits), any character, you name it. No content restrictions or tagging requirements beyond what AO3 requires of you.
What if it ends up longer?
We have a small margin of goodwill (think 10-50 words max) but as the point is for the fics to be, well, micro, we'll cut it off at that. You're still welcome to let the fic grow into a mammoth, of course, it's just not gonna count as a fill for this particular challenge.
What if my fill's late?
A writer is never late. Nor is he early; he arrives precisely when he means to. No wait, wrong fandom. You're welcome to fill prompts after a round has finished and we'll reblog it, but you won't make it onto the Masterlist to keep things manageable on our end!

Please check our blog for more detailed info on the requirements, few as they are! If you still have questions after that, don't hesitate to reach out through an ask or DM.
When does this start?
The first round of prompts will go live on Monday, January 15th. We can't wait to see what people come up with! <3

Masterlist
With an amazing 36 works, the 2023 round of the Rare Pair Fest is now closed! Our lovely participants created for 21 different relationships, with Arthur/Gwen/Merlin snatching the first spot with 5 works, Merlin/Gwaine coming second with 4, and third place being shared by Gwen/Morgana, Gwaine/Percival, and Leon/Merlin, all with 3 works each.
The hugest thank you to everyone who left prompts, wrote fics, created art, read and shared and left some love, and last but not least to the Merlin Fic Book Club Server for hosting us on the Discord side of things. I was actually blown away by everyone's enthusiasm for this fest, and I can't wait for the second round <3

The BBC Merlin Rare Pair Fest is thrilled to announce the Rare Pair Week, aimed specifically at artists, gif-makers, and otherwise creatives!
As classical prompt-fests the way we are running it tend to focus on fics, we decided to add a week to give this fandom's great visual artists of any kind some time to shine. Digital/traditional art, gifsets, moodboards, crochet, whatever you can think of is more than welcome!
The event will run in the week before posting for the fest starts, and you can find the daily prompts below. We count any ship/gen relationship that is not Merlin/Arthur as rare for the sake of the event; poly ships including them are more than welcome, though.
Of course, artists/giffers/etc. are still highly encouraged to leave and/or claim prompts.

hello, i know you aren’t a “fic finder” account but you’re one of the last active merlin fic accounts left :( i know this is a long shot but i was wondering if you could help me find a fic.
it’s a modern au, arthur is still royalty, merlin is an architect. the story starts off with them meeting as teenagers (in Italy if i remember correctly) and falling in love. arthur takes merlin to a party, which ends badly so they go home and uther walks in on them kissing. merlin leaves heartbroken. years later they meet again as adults because merlin won the architect competition that arthur is holding to build a new children’s hospital.

There are only few rules and you can find them all indicated on the form, so without further ado:

The complete prompt list will be published after the form closes on August 31st, but before claiming opens on September 3rd, so you'll have time to look through it and decide which ones you'd like to go for. More detailed info on the claiming process will be shared then!
Please remember that while you're welcome to self-prompt, you do not need to submit said idea during the prompting period, and there would in fact be no guarantee that you'll be able to claim it if you do. You'll be able to simply sign up during the claiming process instead.

Coming Soon...
We're happy to announce the first round of the BBC Merlin Rare Pair Fest! This is a prompt-based event that will focus on the lesser explored relationships (romantic & platonic), and run from August until November. For the sake of this fest, any work not focusing on Merlin & Arthur (as either romantic or platonic) will count as a rare pair.
Schedule:
Prompting: August 17th until August 31st - anyone will be able to leave up to 10 prompts through a form we'll share
September 1st/2nd: a list of all submitted prompts goes live
Claiming opens: September 3rd - anyone who would like to create for this part of the fest can claim a prompt by filling out another form. You do not need to have submitted prompts to do this, and submitting prompts does not mean you'll have to otherwise participate!
Works Due: November 5th - all creations created for a claimed prompt must be submitted to our AO3 collection. We will draw up a posting schedule by which works will be revealed over the next few weeks!
Posting Starts: November 13th, with one to two works per day.
As these fest formats somewhat tend to favour writers, the second part of this fest will be a Rare Pair Week run here on Tumblr in November, to give any and all visual artists some time to shine!

For third consecutive year I joined to the @merlin-fic-server Tournament of Champions, and I can say my honor is intact because I finished the challenge, and did a 12 frames story in less than 24 hours.
The prompts this year were varied but I choose Setting: parallel/multiple universes (and maybe used the Setting: somewhere outside Europe and Vampires too). I wanted to use the idea of giving each universe a diferent art style, and I think it doesn't look half bad. Please enjoy!

oh my god I did it
meant to post this last night but it was Late by the time I finished editing, so I just went straight off to bed; here it is, in all its glory—my fic for @merlin-fic-server’s tournament of champions! basic premise is you have to write a 10k fic in 24 hours, and somehow I ended up with 13k. something about the indomitable human spirit, something something. HUGE shoutout to my group, group 4, because those 13k would definitely not exist without their encouragement <3
my prompts:

prompt - talking and communication issues
there’s some “Old West”-typical gun violence and drinking, the specifics of which are posted in the end notes on ao3. but, by and large, it’s a dumb, fun fic about our two favorite idiots falling in love that let me play into my affinity for horses and the kitschy, overly-romanticized western aesthetic, lol. I hope you have as much fun reading it as I did writing it!

Goldbluff had to be, by far, one of the busiest towns Merlin had ever traveled to.
There were just as many people on foot as there were on horseback, with seemingly no order as to who was going where. People clumped in the street and outside of storefronts, haggling for lower prices on tack while their kids played catch perilously close to the horses and buggies. In any given patch of shade there were a half a dozen people playing some kind of card game, and someone was chasing a dog up one of the walkways. Merlin ultimately had to dismount just to avoid inadvertently trampling somebody.
His horse Aithusa didn’t seem to mind the commotion, too busy nosing at strangers’ pockets in an attempt to find a snack. Merlin, though, couldn’t help but feel a bit overwhelmed; his bounty-hunting work typically took him to the outskirts of any given place, and he generally liked to keep to himself otherwise. This was definitely a change of pace.
It certainly didn’t help in finding an inn, that was for damn sure. By the time Merlin found a place not already chock-full of people the sun was hanging low in the sky, blanketing the town with warm rays made hazy by the dust. The sign outside proclaimed the place as “Golden Horizons Inn”, which Merlin might have found a little funny if he wasn’t bone-tired and sweatier than a city-slicker. As he might have expected, the bustling scene from earlier was largely due to cityfolk who had come to town hoping to find the gold for which it was named. That, Merlin had no interest in—he was here for a much different purpose.
But first, he needed a drink.
The Rising Sun was the closest saloon to Golden Horizons, and he tied Aithusa up outside with dinner and a promise that he’d be quick. Hanging out in bars wasn’t really his standard fare, but it was a good way to get the lay of the land, so to speak. Plus, he was exhausted, having been traveling for days on end between towns with a drying waterskin—and that was before he had had to fight the crowds to find a place to sleep for the night. There was nothing wrong with a little pick-me-up after all that.
Tacked up just outside the bar was a wanted poster, yellowed with age and torn at the corners. It boasted a handsome five-hundred-dollar reward for the capture of the infamous bandit Emrys, though the attached image was an insultingly poor recreation of said “ne'er-do-well”. Merlin scoffed, pondering it for a moment, and then went inside.
“You’re not from around here,” the barkeep said as Merlin took his seat. He was handsome in a roguish sort of way, with scruffy facial hair and dark brown half-curls that fell to his shoulders. It was the kind of face that made Merlin smile a little involuntarily, and he leaned into it.
“What gave it away?”
“You look like someone I would have made a point to know if you were,” the barkeep replied, winking.
“Flatterer.”
“That’s what my husband says.” The barkeep sighed dramatically before holding out his hand. “Name’s Gwaine.”
“Merlin.”
Gwaine’s eyes went wide with surprise as they shook hands. “The bounty hunter!”
Merlin sighed, propping his elbows up on the bar. “For better or for worse.”
“What brings you here? What juicy gossip have I missed?”
“None, I’m afraid,” Merlin replied. “Just looking for work.” Which was not, to his credit, a total lie.
“Well, I’m sure you’ll have better luck of it than all these people diggin’ for gold. Don’t get me wrong—I love when all these idiots come to town. Business is booming. Obviously. But, little town secret for you: pretty sure they’re gonna be shit outta luck.”
Merlin chuckled.
“Well, anyway. What can I do you for? It’ll be on the house, whatever it is.”
“That’s not necessary.”
“You’re the prettiest boy to walk in here since my husband. And you can hold a conversation. It’s on the house.”
Merlin wasn’t one to refuse free food and drink a second time. “You make Mule Skinners?”
Gwaine made a small, unexpected sound, grinning. “You keep surprising me, Merlin. Figured a man like you would shoot his whiskey straight.”
“I’m not a masochist.”
Gwaine laughed. “You’re better than the legends say. How do you feel about fish?”
“For free? Great.”
“Perfect.”
While Gwaine set to prepping his drink, Merlin took the opportunity to properly take in the saloon around him. There weren’t many people sitting at the bar with him; most of the patrons were scattered among the tables, chatting and laughing with a rowdy sort of loudness that always made Merlin annoyed. The decor consisted largely of mounted deer heads and kitschy posters about cowboys and finding gold—Gwaine was a master in marketing, he could give him that—along with a couple of plants behind the bar. That latter part was surprising, especially considering that they actually seemed to be alive and well. Merlin made a note to ask him about them when he got back.
Before Gwaine could return, though, Merlin caught sight of a couple of men crowded around a table nestled in one of the saloon’s corners. They were being particularly loud, which wasn’t out of the ordinary, but upon closer inspection he saw that they were all crowded around someone sitting at the table. He frowned, getting up from his seat.
As he neared the small crowd, his suspicions were confirmed, now able to make out what they were actually saying over the general din of the saloon. “Come on, now,” one of the men goaded, a big burly blond bloke with a cruel smile set in his face. He shoved the sitting man’s shoulder with an unkind force. “Do you really think you’re going to make anything of yourself out here?”
“Alright, come off it,” Merlin said loudly. The blond man turned to look at him, raising an amused eyebrow. He was dressed in a red button-down with white threading, tucked loosely into a pair of too-clean pants that were held up by a garish belt buckle. He also had on a nice leather vest, and a cowboy hat that clearly hadn’t seen a whole lot of actual work. It all pointed towards him being another idiot from the city who had come out to Goldbluff looking for gold and a quick buck.
“What’s that now?” the man asked, clearly expecting Merlin to back off.
“Sorry, I didn’t realize I was speaking to a simpleton. Let me rephrase.” Merlin stepped between the group and the table. “Leave him alone. He’s just having dinner.”
The man barked out a shocked laugh. “And just who do you think you are?”
“A halfway-decent person. You oughta try it.”
The man was twirling a pistol around in his hand, over and over like an anxious habit. Merlin figured it was supposed to look threatening, but he couldn’t be less bothered.
“You have some nerve coming into my town and telling me how to act,” the man seethed.
“Your town?” Merlin laughed, resting his hands on his hips. “Who the hell are you? The president?”
“Arthur,” the man replied hotly. “The sheriff’s son.”

Room and Board (Something Like That)
Arthur should’ve known not to trust an Orkney, not that he thought Gwaine’s cousin meant to die unexpectedly. And not that Gwaine’s cousin meant for his house — the place Arthur’s supposed to stay at — to burn down either. At least Merlin is there with him, along for the ride, every step of the way. Now if only it were just them two, and he didn’t have to deal with this brat, Mordred, who insists on running the Orkney ranch and roping Arthur into running it too.

They've been good friends for a long time after all, and going on a romantic, candlelit dinner date should be a completely ridiculous concept.
But before long, the joke turns into something much more serious than Merlin could have ever expected. Something that makes him question both himself, and his entire relationship with Arthur.

Arthur has known for a while that he's bi. He's known for about as long that he finds Merlin attractive, too. They are friends though, and there are a hundred reasons why they cannot happen, no matter what Arthur otherwise thinks about it.
Alternatively: a beginning, a fuck-up, and some hard-won reconciliation, told over the course of four weddings and one funeral.
