Trying to forget the events that brought Ratio irrational pain seems to work smoothly. Until he is back.

It was frustratingly unlike Ratio, famous for his stoicism, to be so concerned about trivial matters. The emotions of strangers, fleeting debates over life and death, and other people’s choices regarding their fate and doom, were equally unworthy of wrapping his head around. They escaped the field of logic and, as such, his field of expertise.

And yet, since the day he left the obnoxious doors of Dewlight Pavilion behind his back, Ratio was quite unable to quell his doubts.

The Interastral Peace Corporation had surely done a whole lot of talking. They accused the Family of deceiving the inhabitants of Penacony, of lying to them about the alleged non-existence of “death” within the Dreamscape.

Used to studying human behaviors and to uncovering schemes and muddy acts, Ratio had seen through Aventurine’s deceit. Both of them knew he was meant to die. Even casting his beliefs and his suicidal tendencies of a rotten gambler aside, Aventurine was well-known among his peers and superiors as someone willing to bet his life away.

Who was fitter for the job than him? Who could wreak havoc on the peaceful mask of Penacony more than a bomb ready to ignite and blow everything in its path?

Despite his initial distrust towards a collaboration, Ratio had completed his duty. He supported Aventurine’s plan, acted according to the script, pretended to betray him, and even left a final word of solace for the man to take along on his crazy ride towards death and its hidden truth.

Nothing else was left. Ratio should be done caring; he should be done bothering. After leaving Penacony, his ties with the events that happened there should have been severed for good.

They were not. The restlessness enveloping his chest since that day told him that they were irritatingly not .

As he glanced outside the balcony, watching the stars twinkle around the familiar sight of the Intelligentsia Guild’s headquarters, Ratio couldn’t help but be reminded of the colorful, lively lights of Penacony’s dreamscape. What he once found rather annoying, ruining his focus and rest more than just a couple times, was now almost amiss in his heart.

Ah, he should stop mulling it over.

It was unlike him.
