I was beautiful, once
Tumblr media
I was beautiful, once, for a summer, and I would stare at my reflection, and think about the eyes that tore through my clothes and never looked at my face and I learned to believe that my body was cruel and my lips were cruel and I had no one to blame but myself. So when you asked me if I feel beautiful, holding my face in your hands, I couldn’t look in your eyes because I am cruel so I closed my eyes and tried not to see my dirty reflection or remember the way hands make me hollow so I just touched my cruel lips between your blue eyes and I didn’t answer.

My best friend wrote this incredible piece. Watch, share, and help raise awareness for victims of sexual assault and celebrate the bravery of those of us who survive. The Sexual Assault Center of Nashville changed my life. If you have the means, please help them continue to save and change lives of others in the future.

"I have a story to tell you which is the worst story to tell that ever once I heard. What thickens my tongue? and has me by the throat? I gasp accursed even for the thought of uttering the word." From John Berryman's "The Old Poor" which was the basis for my poem "Dear Mr. Berryman" #otherfrustrationsbook @mikaela_hamilton @annathom_

sneak peek: questions from the artist
Tumblr media
”I deposit them on slips of paper-
my useless skill-
hoping to save enough to be valuable
and when I throw my box into a pool
of dead water
I will drown with them”

about the book
Socks, Cicadas, and Other Frustrations is a collaborative project using poetry, photography, and illustrations to tell a story from three unique perspectives. The book attempts to offer an interpretation of the experience of art by offering visual representations of each poem. The poet is the subject of the photographs, but has no input on the contributions of the other artists.
It seems equally relevant to briefly describe what the book is about. As the poet and the subject of the photographs, this book is about standing naked in the middle of a freeway singing a song you thought was Adele in the wrong key. Broadly, Other Frustrations is about everything that scares me. The book describes growing up, learning to understand pain, and accepting who you are outside of who you thought you'd be. More specifically, Socks, Cicadas, and Other Frustrations is about three artists trying to capture an image of what it looks like to be human.
