Scarlet Witch: “You do not possess me, Chthon. I possess you.”
The Darkhold event has come to an end. It’s been a bit of a rocky road for this series, with some stellar issues (like Darkhold Iron Man) and some not so stellar ones (like Darkhold Blade). At the start of this series, I was a little underwhelmed - I wasn’t sold on the character motivations, particularly when it came to Doom and Wanda. I think a stronger opening chapter would’ve been nice, but overall, I think the Darkhold event sticks the landing.
Wanda is depicted as confident and in control, exhibiting mastery of her powers and the arcane arts. She teams up (and manipulates) Doom, someone who has treated her horribly in the past. And she ultimately is able to defeat Chthon, not by destroying him, but absorbing him to be trapped inside of her. She takes his power for her own.
I think it’s really beautiful, seeing Wanda triumph over her abuser. She isn’t scared or afraid, she isn’t having any sort of episodes of instability, she’s calculating and clever and at her best. At the end of the series, it closes with Wanda proclaiming that she’s finally free. She can’t erase her trauma, but it’s no longer ruling her.
(We also get a new character in this event, Omega the Unknown and…. I’m sure he’ll be fun but I don’t really care about him lmao). I love the way that Wanda is colored in this and the artwork does a great job at cosmic horror. The weak points are the Darkhold Defiled, as they’re just sorta generically evil and… eh. The Wanda stuff is the real grab for this issue.
Between this and the Trial of Magneto, it seems like Marvel is really committed to rehabilitating Wanda - likely due to the value of her IP now with WandaVision’s success in the MCU. Chthon and M-Day are now in her past - and we can focus on Wanda’s bright future.
Verdict: Eight out of ten darkholds
