WORLD COTTON DAY
Cotton is breathable, comfortable, durable, and hypoallergenic, which is why it’s one of the most featured fabrics in our wardrobes. Cotton isn’t just a commodity but an impactful product, affecting 28.67 million growers and millions of families worldwide. World Cotton Day highlights cotton’s role in providing jobs and maintaining economic stability in the least developed countries (L.D.C.s). On this day, the global community is invited to celebrate the world’s most important natural fiber.
World Cotton Day is observed to reflect the importance of cotton as a global commodity. It’s meant to attract donors and beneficiaries and enhance cotton development assistance, recognize cotton and those involved in producing and trading it, advance related technology and research and development, and find new investors and partners within the private sector.
Did you know?
1. A single tone of cotton provides year-round employment for 5 people on average, often in some of the most impoverished regions.
2. Cotton-based filaments are appealing to 3D printers because they conduct heat well; become stronger when wet; and are more scalable than materials like wood.

International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction - 29th Sept
Reducing food loss and waste can play a key role in the transformation of agri-food systems by increasing the availability of food, contributing to food security, healthy diets, and building resilience. Food loss and food waste reduction also serves as a key climate strategy by reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs).  It can therefore help countries and businesses to raise climate ambition, while conserving and protecting our ecosystems and natural resources upon which the future of food depends.

International Day of Sign Language
The International Day of Sign Languages is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users.
There is also an international sign language, which is used by deaf people in international meetings and informally when traveling and socializing. It is considered a pidgin form of sign language that is not as complex as natural sign languages and has a limited lexicon.
The resolution establishing the day acknowledges that early access to sign language and services in sign language, including quality education available in sign language, is vital to the growth and development of the deaf individual and critical to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals. It recognizes the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity. It also emphasizes the principle of “nothing about us without us” in terms of working with Deaf communities.

2023 Theme Actions for peace: Our ambition for the #GlobalGoals
The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. Never has our world needed peace more. 2023 marks the mid-point in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.
The SDGs aim to bring us closer to having more peaceful, just, and inclusive societies, free from fear and violence. But without the buy-in and contribution of a wide range of actors including the 1.2 billion young people alive, the goals will not be achieved. We invite you to join the United Nations’ call to take action for peace: fight inequality, drive action on climate change, and promote and protect human rights.

International Day for the Preservation Ozone Layer - 16th Sept
What is the current state of the ozone layer?
The ozone layer sits in the stratosphere between 15 km and 30 km above the earth and shields us and other living things from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. Ozone layer depletion could have serious effects on human health and the environment.
The 2019 ozone hole has been very small and short-lived, which was mostly driven by unusual meteorological conditions. In particular, August and September 2019 showed exceptionally high temperatures at altitudes between 20 and 30 km above the Antarctic, stopping the formation of icy clouds that usually trap ozone-depleting molecules that, when released during springtime in the Southern Hemisphere, trigger ozone destruction. Taken together, the mitigation of ozone depletion is still very fragile and scientific evidence suggests that more action is still required to remove pressure on the ozone layer caused by ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
Benefits of having ozone layers
Absorbs UV light, reducing human exposure to harmful UV radiation that causes skin cancer and cataracts.
When inhaled, it reacts chemically with many biological molecules in the respiratory tract, leading to a number of adverse health effects.
