Toxic Work Environment 101
Over the span of 12 years that I have been working, I have observed what a supportive and collaborative work environment looks like, and what a toxic and detrimental work place feels like. I’ve worked at both places one where a company didn’t treat us well but was a place where staff were supportive and collaborative. I have worked at a place where it was a great company to work for however the management or particular supervisor was difficult to work with and made it seem like a prison to work at.
Important traits to have in a work place.
1) Trust- you hired us to do the work, so trust us to do it. We are adults and do not need hand-holding (micromanaging), it actually sets your employees back on time when you are constantly harassing them for minor things instead of focusing on bigger issues.
2. Treating staff as human beings. Talking to them like adults and realizing that everyone has a life outside of work and what we choose to do outside of work is our own business.
3. Keeping gossip to a minimum, or use happy hour after work to talk about others rather than directly in front of other staff. I worked at a place where it felt like mean girls- everyone was always talking smack about each other as the other person left the room or was not in that day. I don’t wanna hear or see your dirty laundry - take it home.
4. Collaborative, creative, supportive space. Work should be conducive to your growth, a good leader wants to grow their staff as professionals and improve the workspace. An employer should give you creativity to be yourself, flexibility to speak your ideas without being judged or shot down immediately.
5. Work is a second home. You are at work 40 hours a week, 160 hours a month, give or take 1,920 hours a year. Thats 23% of your time, and remember a big chunk of the time we are sleeping or eating. Now, should work feel like a safe place, a place that we can call home?
-In regards to this we were spied on and monitored for what we did outside of work. That is invasion of privacy and also non of anyones business what we do outside of work especially if its legal (like drinking some margaritas or wine after work). What matters is what we do at work, our work ethic and how we behave- if what we do after work doesn’t effect that- MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS.
6. Be humble. Embrace different personalities. No supervisor should EVER tell you to change your personality to accommodate their wishes. I worked in a place where people where told not to be friends with the lower staff, “told us we laugh too much”, that we should not be friends at work, or treated it like there was a caste system. I’m sorry if I am working in education I would rather hear “laughter” than bullets or dead silence.
No need to be fake. Be cordial, practice good work ethic but ABSOLUTELY no need to be extremely fake to people. The last thing I want to leave you with: It is exhausting being fake around people, so why not let people be themselves as long as they are doing their job?
*This post has nothing negative to do with my current place of work. I am very happy with where I work now. I feel I am being treated well, that everyone works hard, and minds their own business. In fact it is a model place for how they treat employees, trust them to do the work, leave room for healthy debate, and how everyone has been respectful thus far.
I hope this little post was helpful towards people thinking of leaving a toxic work environment. If you have to drag your feet out of bed every morning, worry about who is checking your social media, not feeling appreciated, scared to take time off work, feel like you can’t be yourself or aren’t allowed to be, maybe it is time to move on. Do everything you can to get your wishes, tell human resources whats happening, ask for a raise or promotion when you feel you deserve it, talk to your supervisor. If nothing happens in a few months leave!

Laughter is a sign of healing. When I can laugh at all of the things that used to cause me pain, I’m consciously aware that I’ve healed and learned from that situation. I’m proud of myself.

Previously, I’d only seen the first two panels and assumed it was the complete comic.
This version is much better.
