Another example of Appeal to Emotions as Mar Roxas accepts to run for President, teary-eyed, and commits not to taint the reputation of “Daang Matuwid.”

This is a contract that started out in original sin. The contract itself was anomalous and the contract binds the government to continue this program.
Mar Roxas
Yet another act of Scapegoating from Presidential Candidate Mar Roxas as he impliedly shifts the blame to previous administrations: Former Presidents Cory Aquino and Fidel Ramos, for the current bad state of the Metro Rail Transit Line-3 (MRT-3). As former DOTC secretary, the contract of the MRT-3 has also passed through his hands.

Mar Roxas uses the failure of PNP and AFP to coordinate as a scapegoat to lessen the blame on the President for the Mamasapano Massacre.
The fallacy of casting a blame such as Scapegoating is often cynically used to shield those truly responsible for the blame. Here, the host says it for Mar --that He was not involved in the planning and Mar agrees to this statement. However, Roxas, being the DILG secretary, and President Aquino should both be held accountable for the Mamasapano Massacre as it is their job to oversee the plans within Local Government Units, and for President Noy, to oversee the AFP and even the entire country.

I will leave everything on the floor para sa labang ito,
Mar Roxas, acceptance speech at “Gathering of Friends and Supporters,” July 2015, Club Filipino
Mar Roxas said this in response to President Aquino’s message as he endorsed Mar as his preferred successor. However, the “Daang Matuwid” slogan has become a Reductionism of the qualifications of Mr. Roxas as a presidential candidate. What does “Daang Matuwid” really mean after all? In addition, he continually uses the slogan throughout his campaign.
“Marami sa inyo ang hindi naman kailangang magpakita dahil simula pa lang ay tumaya na kayo sa Daang Matuwid at kay Mar Roxas.”

Alam mo, Karen, sa kasaysayan ko, binangga ko mga malalaking interes. Pharmaceutical industry......cheaper medicine law, banking industry at insurance industry, yung pre-need law natin. So sa aking karanasan, binabangga ko ang mga malalaking interes kung ito ay para sa kapakanan ng ordinaryong Pilipino. Wala akong problema doon.
Mar Roxas during the 3rd 2016 Presidential Debates
Mar Roxas’ answer to the question, “Pero kaya niyo bang lahat na banggain ang mga malalaking department store, malalaking mall?”  is an example of Appeal to Pity.

Mar Roxas on an issue raised by a commuter in the 3rd 2016 Presidential Debate
The question of a Ms. Perla Suan was about the struggle on transportation in Metro Manila specifically in the Metro Manila Rail Transit System (MRT) and Manila Light Rail Transit System (LRT). Mar Roxas stated one of the reasons of the tremendous traffic in the metro but he did not stated any valid proof or reference regarding what he presented thus committing a fallacy of Proof Surrogate.

Mar Roxas on the 2nd 2016 Presidential Debate. (Excerpt from his closing statement)
This statement is an example of Appeal to Pity--the attempt to distract from the truth of the conclusion by the use of pity. It also attempts to persuade using emotion, specifically sympathy, instead of evidence.

Mar Roxas, yet again, committed another Ad Hominem, On the 2nd 2016 Presidential debate held on University of the Philippines Cebu last March 20, 2016, Mar Roxas’ answered the issue about his Wharton degree. The latest question fielded against Roxas, after his friend-turned-political foe Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte accused him of lying about his Wharton degree, a subchapter in a verbal tussle that saw the two presidential candidates challenge each other to a slap-fest, a fist fight, a gun duel, until Roxas eventually said it was best to focus on other “issues.”

Our rivals are going down, while we are going up. This is a reflection of the trust the people have continued to give us, and we thank them for it.
Mar Roxas
HASTY GENERALIZATION
- when a conclusion is not logically justified by enough unprejudiced evidence; it proceeds from specific or particular to general
Mar Roxas gave the conclusion that the reason why there continues to be trust from the people is because the “rivals are going down, while we [Liberal Party] are going up.” Mar assumed that the immediate reason for the trust being given was the rivals fluctuating however, he should not assume this is the only reason or the main reason for the trust being given by the people. He drew a general idea from one specific reason.

But that’s not all: The top 10 percent–not top 10 in numbers but the top 10 percent of that graduating class–there are roughly 1.1 million seniors in high school that are going to graduate. So the top 10 percent is roughly 100,000 kids. These hundred thousand are also going to get a stipend similar to what GASTPE can now provide, about 10,000 pesos each so they can go to the best college that they can get into, so that again, their poverty will not be a limit to what education that they can get and what future they can build for themselves.
Mar Roxas at the 2016 Presidential Dialogues of the Makati Business Club
PROOF SURROGATE
-Proof surrogate is an expression that suggests evidence to support one's claim without actually providing any evidence to support it.
Mar Roxas stated a claim about the percentage of seniors in high school that are going to graduate and stated more numerical data in relation to this. Roxas however, did not have evidence to support these numerical data. He did not state any evidence to prove that these numbers were true.
So technically, if we analyze strictly in consideration of the Proof Surrogate fallacy, we can say that Roxas might’ve just made up such numbers simply because he did not give any support or verifying evidence for his claims.

Another Appeal to Celebrity was committed in this political ad  which is accepting a claim of a celebrity based on his or her celebrity status, not on the strength of the argument. Additionally, Appeal to Emotion--which is an attempt to manipulate an emotional response in place of a valid or compelling argument--was also committed on this video.

Mar Roxas blamed by Metro Rail Transit Holdings chairman Robert John Sobrepeña for the contract mess that the light train company is facing
Tumblr media
“This is a contract that started out in original sin,” Roxas said. “The contract itself was anomalous and the contract binds the government to continue this program.”
Roxas blamed the Ramos administration for the contract mess. This is an example of Scapegoating  which is unfairly blaming an unpopular person or group of people for a problem, or a person or group that is an easy target for such blame.

Q and A portion with Mar Roxas at the Makati Business Club Forum Fairmont Hotel, Makati
(on the issue of the country joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership)
[excerpt from Roxas’ answer]
“I’ve negotiated for the country, the JPEPA, [your] Excellency [to Ambassador Ishikawa]. I was the trade negotiator for JPEPA. I was the senator who defended it on the Senate floor as a trade agreement.”
This is an example of an Appeal to Accomplishment--when the argument being made is sheltered from criticism based on the level of accomplishment of the one making the argument.  A form of this fallacy also occurs when arguments are evaluated on the accomplishments, or success, of the person making the argument, rather than on the merits of the argument itself.

Roxas on Duterte over the MRT issue
Roxas committed, yet again, one of the most common fallacies commited by politicians, the Ad Hominem (Abusive) which is when a person is attacking the person making the argument, rather than the argument itself, when the attack on the person is completely irrelevant to the argument the person is making.
