There’s not enough talk about Moonlight 2016 on here for me. What about the aesthetic? The urban landscape edging up to the ocean? The darkness of night and an empty beach under the moon? The hush of the tide? What about the way Chiron literally cannot bring himself to communicate his experience with another person. The way he doesn’t fit in with other people, the way he kept to himself. The way he was passive until he turned and started protecting himself with aggression and hardness. How when Kevin punched him that day, when Chiron came back to retaliate he attacked the other teenager who instigated the fight and not Kevin? WHat about how Kevin was the only peer of his who ever asked him about his life, who ever was curious and asked him to open up to him? WHat about the fear of touching another boy, the paralyzing fear? The way Chiron would never have touched Kevin if Kevin hadn’t initiated it, the way Chiron just went along with it as if his mind turned off long enough for him to let himself be touched by Kevin? What about Juan, the only father figure in his life, and Teresa who he would defend even in her absence? The scene in the ocean, you’re in the middle of the world, right now. The childhood wounds that he suffered completely alone because he just wouldn’t, couldn’t, open up about it to anyone. The excellent depiction of being a child of a drug addict. The way he wiped the tears from his mother’s face when she cried, after all the suffering she brought to him. The softness of him as a boy, Chiron didn’t want to fight he wanted to hide. The way he grew up and fought for himself, even though he still just wanted to hide. The way he never took a lover. The way he drove all that way on nothing but a phone call to see Kevin again after ten years. He must have been so unsure about that, on the drive there, when he arrived. But he drove there to see Kevin. The way food is always used as a literal and narrative symbol for help and comfort to Chiron, the way Kevin said “I’ll cook for you,” the way that scene shows us the care and attention Kevin gives to preparing the food for an old friend. The way Kevin is friendly and open and the way he sees Chiron for whatever it’s worth, even though he doesn’t open up he doesn’t talk he seems like he doesn’t even know how even in his adulthood. The way Kevin isn’t ashamed of who he is and the way he invites Chiron to feel the same. The TENDERNESS of Kevin’s thumb against Chiron’s neck, smoothing back and forth. The way Chiron asks, “why did you call me?” The way he doesn’t answer when Kevin asks “where are you staying tonight?” The way he stands in Kevin’s kitchen and the way Kevin is unafraid to point out to Chiron things about himself and unafraid to ask Chiron, “who are you?” Because they know that Kevin knows him for who he is. The way Chiron said, You’re the only man who ever touched me. The only one. That second “only one” shot me in the chest like a bullet. Finished me. The way Kevin didn’t say anything to that because there’s nothing to say that works better than doing it again, touching him again and letting him put his head on his shoulder, because I know you need it.

I think my favorite jokes are the ones that weren’t even all that funny until I was an adult, and now they’re fucking hilarious. I’m not even talking about the dirty jokes. I’m talking about in Finding Nemo where the sharks are having fucking AA for fish eating. Remember that shit? “I am a nice shark, not a mindless eating machine. If I am to change this image, I must first change myself.” Who ever thought of that? That was brilliant. Or what about that time in Shrek 2 where Shrek and Donkey infiltrate the castle pretending to be union workers? Little me didn’t give a shit about unions but big me is remembering Shrek going “It’s okay buddy, we’re from the union” and the desk worker secretively “we don’t even have dental,” and Shrek just shakes his head and looks at Donkey like he can’t believe this shit and goes, “They don’t even have dental.” What the fuck. I’m dying of laughter. Who comes up with this shit.

What if instead of Jake being sent to prison in s4 it was in fact Amy
it wasn’t supposed to be likethis.
amy and rosa were working thatdrug bust case, and they weren’t supposed to have blown it, they weren’tsupposed to blow the identity of the undercover agent working under theinfamous lieutenant hawkins, residentfemale badass of the nypd, of all people.
amy and rosa weren’t supposed tobecome a part of their task force, but damnit, they weren’t supposed to get so excited but they’d never met a woman sowell-known, so well-respected, so high up in the nypd. and honestly, they’reboth a little bit star-struck? imagine how much having the recommendation of hawkinson her resume would help launch amy’s career? she could move up the ranksfaster than even she had planned.
they weren’t supposed to walk inon hawkin’s squad snorting crack and planning their next bank robbery. theyweren’t supposed to be the only ones at the bank robbery, either.
amy and rosa are arrested, andholt and jake and the rest of their squad get enough money together to bail
the media paints them ashorrendously as possible. one station even suggests that maybe this is why theyshould have a stricter policy for immigration altogether—rosa snaps at thefirst interviewer who poses the question, and it doesn’t help their case. jakeresolves to devote all of his time and energy after they prove rosa and amy’sinnocence to completely eviscerating all of that particular news station. or atleast the interviewer.
while terry and charles work withthe hackers to try and dig something up,jake and amy drive to flaxton farms—amy breaks down when they get back in thecar when they come up with nothing. jake’s heart shatters, and he nearly asksher the question he’s been wanting to ask since april twenty-eighth, but hedoesn’t want it to seem like a goodbye.
“we’re never gonna stop fightingfor you, ames. i’m never gonna stop.”
“i can’t ask for you to wait. if igo to jail for fifteen years, i’m never going to be a captain.”
“amy, we’re not gonna stop. you’regonna be captain, you’re gonna be hailed as a hero when they figure out howawesome you are.”
a pause. softly, “i love you.”
firmly, “i love you.”
jake’s worst fears are realizedwhen—he doesn’t even want to say the name—heturns out to be on hawkin’s side, and the guilty verdict is announced, andfor the first time he thinks he sees real emotion on rosa’s face, because thetwo women clutch at each other. over rosa’s shoulder, amy’s eyes are on him, wide and brimming with tears just barely unshed. gina puts her arm around him,but he barely notices.
jake considers vaulting over thebeams that separate them to steal amy away, where they can run, far far away.
he’s able to come to, to move his bodyenough that he can follow them closely as they’re led out of the courtroom—in handcuffs—and clutch at her, hug herat least, he sneaks in one last hard kiss before they’re dragged away.
because the world hates him, hatesthem, hates the entire squad, the two are put in the women’s supermax prison injericho, south carolina.
he drains most of his bank accounton plane tickets down there every three weeks, like clockwork. sometimes holtcomes too, sometimes terry. charles once comes but he breaks down in tears atseeing both rosa and amy behind the thick glass that he literally can’t getwords out, and when he hugs jake, who keeps talking to amy through the phonethroughout the whole ordeal, jake’s hoodie ends up getting soaked.
every second he spends in thevisiting center, with amy right across him and they’re separated only by glass,he feels the weight of the small velvet box tucked in the pocket of his leatherjacket.
when he asks amy how she is (notwanting to know the truth, frankly), she just purses her lips, nodsexcessively, and says “i’m fine, i’m really fine. they’ve got a great library.”he almost chokes on just how amy shecan be, even in an orange jumpsuit.
he talks to rosa sometimes, too.they’re on different visiting rotations, so when he can, he stays for a fewhours at a time so he can ask her how she is. when he can stand it, and evenwhen he can’t—rosa sees the pain in his eyes, in his expression—rosa will tellhim how amy is, really.
and the answer varies.
amy keeps claiming that she’sfine, just fine, and she doesn’t need protection. but rosa explains in a lowvoice that amy’s pretty good at pretending, that the taller latina has had tothreaten some of the other inmates here to stay away from the soft, soft amy.the amy who even smiled when they told her she could bring a few books withher. the amy who she can sometimes hear singing a quiet cuban lullaby toherself in times when she feels hopeless, that she hasn’t had the heart to askmore about.
they aren’t cell-mates, but theyare on the same block, so most of their activities are timed together. rosaeven starts a riot at one point, or so she claims.
jake and holt and the rest of thesquad works themselves to the bone, following each and every one of hawkin’sfootsteps—jake has a tendency to get consumed by his work, but nothing comparesto trying to get the love of his life and one of his best friends out of jail, out of the place where they’ve wrongfully been imprisoned. he tries to avoidtheir apartment, their home, as much as he can, after spending a few nights onterry’s and charles’ respective couches. sometimes, when he’s been at theprecinct for nearly three days straight, holt will sigh and wave him into hisoffice, gesture to the sofa that’s in his office, say, “we’ll get her out, peralta” as softly as he’s heard holt say anything.
jake finds himself in the new yorkpublic library a lot, using their shared vip membership, when he feels a littlelost (which, admittedly, is about seventy percent of the time he’s not workingon the case), and it’s when he’s browsing the harry potter section—he couldn’tbring himself to finish the series, so right now he doesn’t know who the halfblood prince really is—that he hears someone clear their throat, and holy shit, it’s seamus murphy, local mobboss, and jake automatically reaches for the gun on his hip before murphy makesit clear that he has something that could… speed along the investigation.
jake almost takes him up on hisoffer right then and there.
but he waits and waits, and aftera failed attempt at the train station, holt realizes it’s the pigs, and they bust up the operation and after giving astatement and writing up the most well-writing, grammatically correct report(amy would be so proud), he’s catching a plane down to south carolina, and he’swaiting in the room where he was told to sit and he desperately tries to gethis leg from shaking. rosa’s supposed to be released a little later, for somereason.
and when he sees her?
he rushes to her, and he holds herfor the first time in three months. his left hand cups her face while his rightarm winds around her waist, holding her tight, tight, tight against him. he can feel the wet on her cheek and he’s prettysure that when she kisses him, she can taste the salt on his own lips.
when they pull apart, his handmoves to her hair, clutching her with every inch of his life, as her face movesto sit in the juncture between his neck and shoulder, and his shirt is probablyruined with all of the tears but he can’t blame her
he considers proposing to herright then and there but he thinks that he wants to wait, he wants to separatewhat will hopefully be a joyous moment (one of the best of his life, probably)from the smell and overall shittiness of this place.
when he holds her, he feels moreat home than he did whenever he was at their apartment. he thinks that maybe it’sbecause home to him isn’t a place, but instead the woman in his arms, stillsmelling like jasmine even though she definitely hasn’t had her normal shampoowith her.
this is enough, he thinks.
he hopes she thinks it too.
send me an au and i’ll give you 5+ headcanons about it
