Jack Rowell is coming back
He is coming back to show his work at a venue that I think must be just about perfect for his fine work. The Main Street Museum.
In the 1990s that Jack Rowell wandered in to the Museum and wanted to have a show. Of course we said yes. His work is great. His subjects wide-ranging; show-offs at the fairgrounds, ladies in wet t-shirts, dancers at the Cocktail Lounges of Orange county, Fred Tuttle, drag-queens, Fred Tuttle being kissed by drag queens, Big Fish, hunters, and his own family. He is a real person and his photos are real. Originally on film (gelatin and silver) they are now digital. He switched over a few years ago and has never looked back. He still favors natural light. He can do a lot of magical things with a few lights and a few willing subjects. Even his “Big Fish” look like they enjoy posing for him. For years he has said he would like to use a panoramic camera and take pictures of the interior of the Museum. We we twist his arm on this offer.
Jack Rowell opening receptions are usually a hoot. The first time he ever had an opening reception for his artwork at The Main Street Museum, the fire marshal shut down our venue, because Jack draws such big crowds, and because it was so unsafe. (At the time we were renting from a notorious local slum-lord.)
We can’t tell you if there will be go-go dancers—or “Rowellettes”—in attendance this time around, but we can promise you it will be fun. Also on display will be relics and memorabilia from Mr. Rowell, and from the career of Fred Tuttle, Tunbridge Dairy Farmer and US Senate candidate.
Jack’s portrait of Myra Flynn will be on display as well. And afterwards the concert by Ms. Flynn will be surpassing fine, it will in fact be sublime. She is a talent that has amazed audiences far and wide and is now on her Vermont tour. We are so lucky to have such a masterful tune-smith on our stage. Don’t miss her!
There will be other  fun things to see at the Museum as well. Due to lack of funding we are now open by appointment only. But our very busy, generous, all volunteer staff will be happy to show you around that night.
So, once again, “May it Please You” at the Main Street Museum. 58 Bridge St, White River Junction, Vermont.
“Jack Rowell; Cultural Documentarian” Portraits of Vermont People & Other Wildlife November 3, 2018 Opening Reception 6-8pm in the Gallery Free & Open to the public
Myra Flynn, 'Uncorked; Fall & Wine Tour 8-10pm on the Main Stage at The Main Street Museum $20 at the door

o really? youve got “Indian ancestry” what part of India do your ancestors come from, Mumbai, Delhi? Bangalore? Chennai? ... or maybe Kolkata?

Dear non-natives,
Native people are united in many ways but there is no such thing as a collective “native culture.
A DNA test saying you have native blood does not mean you’re native. Blood does not give you a claim to the hundreds of native cultures that exist. Blood quantum as what determines who is native is a settler colonist idea. Stop.
If you take a DNA test and it comes back saying you have some native blood or if you find out you had a native ancestor and your response is “how can I profit off this” then you’re a piece of shit. You don’t give a fuck about native people and it’s obvious.
I get so many messages asking how people can get a tribal card to get scholarships. If you’re one of these people then I have zero respect for you. You have no problem using native claim for profit while you could care less about native struggles.
“But I have a lot in common with native culture” no, no you do not. Again, there are hundreds of native cultures, not just one. Your fascination of the more popularized aspects of only a handful of these cultures does not give you a connection. Thinking something is cool is not a connection. Blood quantum does not give you a connection.
I’m using this message I got last night as example but this is something I deal with a lot.
#dearnonnatives we can always tell when you love our cultures but could care less about our peoples.

Quote
“The English who first came to this country were but a handful of people, forlorn, poor, and distressed. My father [Massasoit] was then sachem; he relieved their distresses in the most kind and hospitable manner. He gave them land to plant and build upon. They flourished and increased. By various means they got possessed of a great part of this territory. But he still remained their friend until he died. My elder brother became sachem; he was seized and confined and thereby thrown into illness and died. Soon after I became sachem they disarmed all my people. Their land was taken; but a small part of the dominion of my ancestors remains. I am determined not to live until I have no country.”

Street scene, near the Novi Musee. St Petersburg. and our friend Fyodor appears to have fallen asleep in her wonderful artwork, next to a Belka, or squirrel. Im sure it couldnt have been the wine stewards fault...

In 2012 there was a tree growing in the Florida swamps. It was the largest tree east of the Mississippi River and one of the oldest trees, recorded, on earth. In 2012 there was a 26 year old human who needed light and heat while they were taking drugs. The bonfire lighted for this purpose quickly got out of hand and the “Senator” was burned to the ground. Thus a 3,500 year old cypress tree, Taxodium distichum, lost a battle with an H. sapiens. Above one can see the remains of the tree, the surrounding swamp in Longwood, Florida, and the offspring, named the “Phoenix” by local school kids. It appears to be healthy and even has sprouted “knees.” In only 3,495 years, it will be as old as the Senator. President Calvin Coolidge and Grace Goodhue Coolidge visited the tree in 1929 and placed a plaque nearby. At some point, the plaque was stolen but new, fiberglass, interpretive signage was recently installed. The things we find on our trips are sometimes quite astonishing.

A dog taxidermy display at the Natural History Museum of Salzburg. Yes, some were bad —and some were very good as well! It’s not something I am willing to do for pet owners, but I love the genetic variability of canines and look forward to working on more in the future. I would never work on my own dogs though. How do you feel about domestic dog taxidermy? (at Haus der Natur)
