so i just read blue lock chapter 213 and it's so cute!!! especially the part where ness regrets his existence <3 like yes regret the fact that isagi is better than you and want to know how he did it!!
anyways isagi aka bbg did very well to score and then it's all flashbacks to see big man kunigami and how isagi learned to shoot with his left foot. it's all fun and games + a team z reunion, which is awesome, and kunigami is finally becoming his old self again?? we love to see it.
sad that there was no don lorenzo content but i've already sacrificed my brother for him to appear in the next chapter so it'll be fine.

competitive swimming & blue lock
was thinking about how the blue lock philosophy is literally everything i've learned (and am still learning) during my years as a competitive swimmer and how the 'believe you're the best to become the best' motto is literally PREACHED in other sports, but have it show up in football and you're literally the devil. huh, what's up with that?
so i've seen blue lock gets hate (from what i've seen) from not having 'team dynamics' and shredding the 'value of friendship and camaraderie' but in reality a lot of 'team sports' like swimming & tennis, where ppl ALSO work together (relays, doubles matches), have the most toxic mindset possible when it comes to teamwork. like i was taught if i dove in too early during a relay (you can't dive in before the person in the water touches the wall) then it wasn't my fault, but the person IN THE WATER who had slowed down somewhat imperceptibly before touching the wall.
honestly, the lack of a team dynamic in blue lock makes it better?? to me, at least. blue lock to me is like... how free! should have been. now, free! fans leave me alone. i watched 3 episodes of that shit and ran away in fear due to inaccuracy. but in the short amount that i watched, the show felt really weird. i've been a competitive swimmer for a decade now, so trust me when i say i know what i'm talking about here. one of things that felt really off to me was the fact that everyone was so... okay with eachother. i've been on 4 swim teams in my life, and none of them were as happy as that itawobi club. sure, there's only 4 people, but there is 100% going to be conflict between them, especially since there's no coach?? like idk if they get one later on or smth but like,,, how u gonna get better if u got no one teaching you?? idk but that shit confusing man.
anyways back on topic. blue lock. i love blue lock. the fact that everyone gets along on the surface but in reality is trying to beat the other people is exactly the feeling i get during a competition or even just practice. it's real, not just a manga special effects thing that the author made up to look edgy. i just know that if blue lock was about like,, track and field or swimming or some shit it would not be getting compared to high school slice of life anime like haikyuu. no hate to haikyuu i love it, but blue lock is just... on another level. like the way that everything is executed feels so real and gives me that sense of competition that i only get from sport. like i KNOW that these characters feel the same as i do, and that's why it makes it fun.

why sports anime charas wouldn't immediately get folded by ppl from shounens
okay so obviously this isn't going to talk about people from REALLY REALLY op verses like fucking dragonball or bleach or one piece, because literally everyone gets folded by them except for ppl from their own worlds and the mcs from those shitty reincarnated time-traveling tower climbing bullshit manhwas. i will mainly be talking about my hero academia and black clover bc these are the two that i think are somewhat 'weaker' (relatively!! relatively!!!!) compared to other mangas and animes ive seen. also when im refering to shounen i mean like,, ones with powers. ALSO, and this is really important, I AM NOT SAYING THAT THE SPORTS CHARACTERS WOULD WIN. i'm just saying that they're stronger than they get credit for, especially since a lot of people who i see debating this stuff aren't athletes and don't really understand how sport affects you in other parts of your life (including but not limited to fights)
SO!! point 1!! i think this gets swept under the carpet a lot whenever ppl are debating who's better, but powers that work in a specific sport can be translated into something outside of that sport. take midorima from knb as an example: he can shoot really good 3-pointers. well, outside of basketball, that probably means that he would have: a, really good spatial awareness since he never loses the ball or bumps into someone while shooting, b, insane hand-eye coordination, and c, crazy accuracy whenever he throws stuff in general. that's all stuff that's pretty useful in a fight, ngl. honestly, this skillset is kinda better than half the ppl in class 1a. like, sure, they've got quirks, but take away their quirks and most of them are basically useless.
POINT TWO. if a character has a power like isagi's meta vision or kuroko's vanishing thing (idk if it has a name) it's not gonna go away as soon as they get in a fight. meta vision literally lets isagi predict the future. there is no reason why this ability wouldn't give him the upper hand in a fight with someone else. especially since it's not strictly confined to football. the only thing he needs is data, and he can get a lot of that from watching fights. honestly, meta vision is so broken that i just know if he was in bnha it would count as a quirk.
POINT THREE, specifically for people like kise ryouta and reo mikage. anyone who can copy other people will still be able to do it. like obviously they're not gonna be able to shoot fire or do a domain expansion or summon a stand or any of that shit, but they can still copy physical moves. so if they go watch 100 videos of ppl doing krav maga or some shit they'll be able to do it, which would make them pretty strong. considering how in bnha (sorry bnha fans ur anime is just the easiest to compare too) people with more mentally-focused quirks can become really strong just by relying on a weapon or learning some sort of fighting style. in black clover literally half the people get beaten up by some kid who has zero magic and a sword. like, what's stopping kise from grabbing a sword and slamming into some random ua kid's head?? it's not like they'd see it coming.
okay i know you're getting sick of me at this point but just hear me out
sports anime are only underrated in fights because people assume that every single person with powers immediately solos. like, normally they do, but a lot of the time it's not a zero diff fight, like come on. sure, zoro would kill hinata, but would yaomomo really beat reo mikage?? like are you sure?? are you only going off the fact that since she has powers she wins?? think about it for a second, please, i beg of you. powers =/= strong. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

How Isagi uses his empathy
One of the things I enjoy about Isagi as a character is his empathetic nature. There’s a weird take I’ve seen floating around that Isagi allegedly lacks empathy because he spends time a lot of time rationalizing, i.e., trying to understand the behavior of others. This is not true. Some of the most rational people can also be some of the most empathetic. In fact, cognitive empathy, which is a type of empathy, involves being able to accurately understand another person’s mental state from their point of view, and respond accordingly. Bothering to perceive where another person’s head is at requires empathy. We’ve seen Isagi do this while playing soccer multiple times.
He did it with Bachira automatically:
Tumblr media
Isagi perceived Bachira’s desire to go to the goal on his own during the 4v4
He did it again with Rin, also automatically:
Tumblr media
Isagi intuited Rin’s desire to prevail over Itoshi Sae in a 1v1 during the U-20 game
More recently, Isagi has become conscious of considering every player’s POV when he plays:
Tumblr media
Isagi considers everyone’s views in his field of play
Mind you, Isagi is the only one with egocentric meta vision, which is quite literally an ability to understand another footballer’s play from their point of view so that it may be incorporated into Isagi’s play predictions. So by this point, Isagi has actually taken his empathy, operationalized it (made the unknown, known and the unconscious, conscious), and infused it into his play style, in accordance with his adaptability genius.
Now I also want to talk about is Isagi’s personality off the field, because there is another piece (lol) to all this. Something else that is captivating about Isagi is the duality of his character, or to put it more broadly, the complexities and contradictions in his personality. Obviously, while on the field and fully immersed in his ego, Isagi becomes quite ruthless, to the point where even his empathy may become another tool to win. Not only does Isagi use egocentrism to his advantage, but earlier on when Isagi unlocked meta vision he even thinks of himself as “merely data,” i.e., a piece of the puzzle to GOAL. However, when he is out of his ego persona, he can again become friendly, prosocial, and indeed, compassionate.
To clarify, having compassion is displaying empathy. The word compassion comes from Latin, and means, “to suffer together.” Understanding other’s from their point of view is not the entirety of empathy; instead, it also involves an emotional component, called affective empathy. Affective empathy is the ability to share an emotional experience with someone else, or having compassion for someone else. So we can see how the pointed cliché of “putting yourself in another person’s shoes,” evokes the idea of “suffering together,” feeling how another is feeling, thinking how another is thinking, seeing how another is seeing, and indeed, empathy.
Isagi “suffering together,” in shared emotion, and empathizing with his teammates:
Tumblr media
Isagi sits with how Igaguri is feeling before the Team V matchup
Tumblr media
Isagi feels the same as Reo prior to the 3rd selection matches
Tumblr media
Isagi declares to Ego his and the Blue Lock 11’s shared feelings and desire to beat the U-20 squad
Isagi is generally shown to be aware of the feelings of others. He has a desire to help and is cooperative, precisely because he is empathetic, i.e., he considers how other’s might feel in a given situation and can feel alongside them. Isagi’s gift is awareness, which fits right in with his ability to see and feel how others see and feel.
It is because Isagi naturally has a kind and compassionate personality outside of competition that the contrast between his normal temperament and his ruthless ego while in flow becomes all the more jarring. In addition to his  empathy, Isagi is also a very, very pragmatic and motivated person, to the point where he is capable of becoming ruthless in football to achieve his dream. In summation, Isagi is a true competitor. He will use anything at his disposal to win at soccer, even his considerable empathy. (Of course, Isagi is not alone in that reality. Everyone who plays under Ego tries to do the same; they all will exploit and be exploited. It is Blue Lock, after all.) Isagi’s attitude is not something I pathologize, rather, I see it as truly interesting.
Lastly, I want to say as a side note, I don’t believe that empathy is reserved for a select few. It is instead a part of our make up as human beings. It is simply a muscle which must be used, or else it will atrophy. It is not necessarily, “I must either have empathy or I don’t,” but we can grow our feelings of empathy, through patience and experience, if we want to do so.
{Tagging @swordmaidenfuyu who made the astute observation about Isagi’s ruthlessness. Also tagging @aesterblaster, whose opinion I respect… but I had to present a differing view.}
