I’m loving your work on MAWS. How long does it take to typically paint a background? I’m always fascinated by the details from professionals. Do you prefer one type of background over another?
Thank you!!
That all depends on how complex the layout is and if I'm painting from a color key or choosing my own colors. Sometimes I also get stuck rendering certain objects. Most productions shoot for around 1 background a day, though personally I feel a bit on the slow side haha.
I think the big establishing shot of Metropolis took a little over 2 days since that was so detailed! I remember the flatting stage taking soooo long. More standard backgrounds like the newspaper morgue and Clark & Jimmy's/Lois' apartment are usually finished in a day. There was a big emphasis on making the painting process as simple and painless as we could. Our brushes helped with this too! The textured brushes went a long way and I think they make the backgrounds look more complex than they were to actually paint.
If you're asking about my preference in background styles, I absolutely loved this show's style. I've always admired the traditional backgrounds painted for anime and was so happy I could spend a year painting in a similar style! Working on MAWS felt so similar to working on personal paintings. Definitely my favorite show I've worked on so far!

I was kinda nervous to post these since they are traditional sketches and a liiiittle messy but here they are anyway! I’ve been trying to relearn anatomy so I’ve been doing a bunch of head/neck studies in my sketchbook. The studies are boring, but these were some of my favorite sketches I did while trying to apply what I learned!
