something i never imagined would be a problem when it comes to self publishing / printing is fonts.
you thought all the default fonts that come with google docs or microsoft word are royalty-free just because they’re default? i thought so too. and we would be WRONG. most of those fonts are free for personal use but not for commercial use, AKA if you plan to sell the book instead of just keeping it, AKA you either have to buy a license or pick a different font
(garamond and centaur are some fonts that are totally free to use)
but it doesn’t end there! sometimes these self-printing websites require you to embed, or essentially bake, the fonts into the documents so they don’t get messed up, and some fonts–in fact, many default fonts–cannot be embedded.
like arial.
i had to find that out when i was trying to upload my doc for printing last year. i thought i was safe because i didn’t use arial. but apparently that sneaky bastard infiltrated my doc. and you have to download the printing website’s special program to allow arial to be embedded, EVEN IF there is no arial in your doc. why? i don’t know.
can’t stop thinking about my ocs. listening to music? thinking about my ocs. doing shit around the house? thinking about my ocs. driving somewhere? thinking about my ocs. workin on something? thinking about my ocs.
saying the book came to you like that when clearly your dog chewed on it
trying to reshelve books on your own
yelling at us to get our attention
talking on your phone when we’re trying to assist you
yelling at non-management staff for policies they have no power over
asking for more time on the computer when the session has already logged you off, you needed to ask for that time 5 minutes ago
asking us to look something up for you by the call number. the call number tells you where it is. please just give me the title.
getting upset with us for anything COVID related
things librarians do NOT judge you for (unless they’re bad at librarianing):
reading erotica
using the copier incorrectly
not speaking english as a first language
being an adult and not reading grown up books
owing fines
liking romance novels
finding out your child’s card is blocked because they’ve been billed for books they’ve secretly been hiding behind their dresser
having books overdue
you liking graphic novels and comics
your CHILD liking graphic novels and comics. seriously. we just want them to read.
taking books off of a display
asking us to check and make sure we don’t have a book you returned (with COVID and quarantining books, more things are getting missed, so asking a librarian to do a shelf check is okay! but be nice. we are So Tired and Busy. if you say something like “if you’re busy feel free to check when you have time and get back to me” we will love you. we will probably be like “you’ve been nice so i’ll go right now”)
things librarians judge, but don’t judge YOU for:
James Patterson. Look. we all know everyone likes him. That’s great, we love that people read because of him! But we do judge James Patterson as an entity. He’s got so many goddamn books. they take up so much goddamn space. james. jimmy. jimsicle. just. stop putting your name on things, please, we are begging you. liking james patterson is Valid. BEING james patterson is not valid.
I adore that moment when you’re walking and suddenly you just have ideas. You know how to fix that plot hole. You know how that final battle is gonna play out. You come up with the most perfect line of dialogue. You find a way to link point a to point b. You have fine details to enhance everything.
That moment of sheer inspiration, that absolute spark of brain magic, is simply phenomenal.
never make a suicide joke again. yes this includes “i wanna die” as a figure of speech. swear off of it. actually make an effort to change how you think about things.
find something to compliment someone for at least 4 times a day. notice the little things about the world that make you happy, and use that to make other people happy.
talk to people. initiate conversation as often as you possibly can. keep your mind busy and you wont have to worry anymore
picture the bad intrusive thoughts in youe head as an edgy 13 year old and tell them to go be emo somewhere else
if someone makes you feel bad most of the time, stop talking to them. making yourself hang out with people who drain you is self harm. stop it.
