Roe has known Winters for over two years. He respects him, he trusts him. He has been a leader they can all depend on, almost too good to be true. Yet, in one moment Roe sees that Winters is human, someone who made a mistake, a life or death mistake.
Roe looks Winters in the eye, tells him what he did wrong, and that he expected more from him. Roe calls him out because that’s what Winters would do if the situation were reversed. Winters doesn’t make excuses, he simply apologizes. Winters allows the medic to point out his mistake because in that moment he doesn’t see himself as Roe’s superior officer, he’s given Roe the authority he deserves.
Roe could have bit his tongue, and if it were any other officer, he probably would. But Winters led by example and Roe knew he needed to speak up. This scene is more than just Roe standing up to his superior. This scene is about Roe being let down and having the gumption to tell him as much. In only a few seconds I understood the character of these two men and their respect for each other; there was no ego involved. That’s why this is one of my favorite scenes.
