Y/N prayed silently her dress would close, Ada suggested getting it slightly loose at certain places just in case, because overnight, her belly was showing and most of her clothes wouldn’t fit anymore. It was funny because it only looked as if she was bloated but it was enough for a zipper to break.
“You ready?” Polly asked just as she knocked on the door, stepping in right away. As usual, she looked so elegant in her attire.
“Her dress is beautiful Mrs. Gray.” Y/N’s grandma pointed out making Y/N blush, she then turned to Polly. “And you look stunning.”
Polly nodded acknowledging her compliment.
“I can’t believe I’m wearing this gown.” Y/N stated staring at her reflection in the mirror, she looked like a completely different person with her hair up in a simple but elegant hairstyle, make up in just the right places, accenting her features, and the dress fit like a glove. She had never had a dress like this.
“You need something else though.” Her grandma suggested, she looked beautiful in her attire too, the Shelby family were too kind to extend an invitation for her.
Opening her bag, Y/N frowned confused by what she meant, she had everything already.
“Your grandfather gave me these when we got married.” From a velvet pouch, she produced a pair of gorgeous diamond studs.
“I think these will look beautiful.” Polly encouraged, feeling a swept of love by the exchange.
Y/N on the other hand felt lost for words, to some it might be a small detail, but to her, the sentimental value it’s what weighted the most.
“These are meant to be wear on occasions like this, right?” She asked holding one of the earrings for her granddaughter while she hooked the other one.
“Looks like you’re all set then… let’s welcome the guests.” Polly added taking grandma’s purse to help her. “Everything’s going accordingly so far.”
The music filled the big room, people were dancing happily, champagne flowing, staff filling empty cups with booze and plates with appetizers. Y/N felt particularly mesmerized by the chandeliers catching the light beautifully and reflecting all around as if it was dancing as well.
Tommy insisted the party should take place in Arrow House, said it would be a good excuse to do a grand opening, so she immediately got busy to have everything ready. The place oozed luxury everywhere she looked, the most important names in the country RSVP’ed faster than she thought. Never in her wildest dreams she imagined how it would turn out, she spent so much time choosing flowers for the center pieces, napkins colors to go with the tablecloths, tableware as well as the menu, days of hard work paying off finally on this night and for a brief instant, she allowed herself to feel proud because she took care meticulously of everything.
“I’ll be back in a minute, need an ashtray.” Polly announced and took grandma by the arm to chat for a while.
Y/N was taking everything in, still not fully believing it was a reality.
“Johnny, get everyone in the kitchen.” He instructed. “Five minu-“ words got caught up in his throat as he took a double look to his left and found Y/N standing by herself next to the staircase.
Her hair was pinned up, framing her face so it was fully on display instead of hiding, the dress made her look gorgeous but the cherry on top was the glowing emanating from within her heart, pregnancy was suiting her well. He then noticed she opened and closed the handbag nervously.
She wasn’t the same girl that used to run with him a race at an open fiel until they reached the river. He let her win so many times… yet that girl was somehow still in her.
He had never seen her like that before. She was more beautiful than he imagined.
But as soon as the thought entered his mind, Tommy kicked himself mentally. He shouldn’t think of her that way.
“Are you planning to give someone a heart attack?” He joked and took a few long strides to be at her side.
“I’m nervous,” she chuckled, “I’m the one having a heart attack.”
Turning around to face him, she felt her mouth going dry, the blue suit was a fabulous choice. It wasn’t traditional, but when she saw it at the tailor’s shop she knew Tommy had to wear it to the event and since she got a blank cheque, she added it to the account. He was so bloody handsome, but she thought that he looked even more that night. There, with a cocked smile and proud shining in his crystal eyes…
They stood there holding each other’s gazes, the people in the background fading away…
Until Johnny Dogs interrupted them.
“The boys are on their way Tom.” He nodded at Y/N. “Are we going, yeah?”
Tommy gave Y/N another look and she encouraged him with a smile to go.
He started to walk away, but then stopped abruptly and turning around he spoke; “Y/N you did an amazing job, thank you.”
Reaching his expectations was all Y/N wanted to achieve, to make him proud of her work. It was the way she knew in retribution to thank him for every little thing he did.
“And Johnny? Y/N told me she counted the paintings ey?” Tommy turned to give her wink. “So you better tell your kin they can’t steal anything or they’ll have to deal with a very pissed Y/N.”
Y/N gasped, of course she didn’t count the paintings. An evident blush covered her face and neck and she started shaking her head in embarrassment.
“Hey! That’s not true.” She tried to keep her manners, but her mind went back to when they were teenagers and her grandma discovered the two of them sneaking into the kitchen to get a slice of the pie she had baked and Tommy blamed it all on Y/N, the worst part is that her grandma believed him and scolded her granddaughter when it had been Tommy’s idea in the first place.
“Where are they, ey?” Tommy asked impatiently a cigarette hanging from his mouth.
“I’m telling you now, we got lost,” announced Arthur. “You really need to do a map, Thomas.”
“Right, boys you’re all here.” Tommy started in a warning tone.
The blinders gathered around him in a circle.
“Tonight it’s a fucking very important day, we’re celebrating the Arrow House grand opening.”
“Yeah, and you said there’d be no bloody uniforms.” Interrupted John.
Tommy shot him a death stare. “Nevertheless… nevertheless, John… despite the bad blood, I’ll have none of it on my carpet.”
They were part of the guest list.
He made a pause and looked around to his men. “Now, for Y/N’s sake, nothing will go wrong. She has worked so fucking hard for everything you see tonight and the Shelby Institute. And if you fuckers do anything to embarrass her, your kin, your cousins, your horses, your fucking kids, you do anything…”
“Tom?” Once more, John interrupted his brother.
“What?”
“What about snow?” Asked Isiah.
John replied something that Tommy couldn’t understand, but he felt his blood start boiling by their silly attitude.
“No, no, no.” He stood in front of the young blinder. “No cocaine.” Then pointing at his face, he repeated; “no cocaine. No sports.” He then moved to point at John. “No telling fortunes. No racing.” Walking back towards Finn, he continued. “No fucking sucking petrol of their fucking cars.”
He hated to admit it out loud, but he was nervous to. He wanted to fit in, he needed to blend in among the richest and more powerful people, to be one of them. To prove everybody that he had been able to claim a stair that was only reserved for those who were born in a crib made of gold.
Meanwhile, upstairs Y/N attended several guests, listening to the stories they were sharing about how much it would mean to them to donate and give back to the community. Some of them, Y/N learned were important politicians who wanted to show a good image to help them gain voters, others members of the aristocracy just wanted to show their wealthy off. Whatever reason they had, Y/N was excited to see some of the cheques they were writing right there for the institution, additional to a monthly donation they promised.
Finding Tommy among the guests, Y/N approached him to ask him if she could save the cheques in his office.
“Can we see this later?” He relief not even sending a glance in her direction, his eyes were fixed like daggers in someone.
As he moved around like a gazelle, about to chase his pry, Y/N noticed a group of women eating him with their eyes, looking him up and down, seizing his frame, biting their lips, probably wondering how would it feel to be with him….
Y/N felt like she was out of place, she shook her head and decided to ask Ada instead where she should keep the documents. She then excused herself for a moment, feeling like the happy bubble had been popped given Tommy’s cold attitude. He was never like this, he had never left her talking alone before, but he had been a bit off the last couple of days.
For some unknown reason.
Perhaps she had been creating a fantasy in her mind, yes he was a good man, but he also had an explosive temper when he wanted to, he snapped at people at the slightest provocation. Why would he treat her differently? Just because a she was pregnant?
A knock on the door disturbed the peace she just found, and without waiting to be asked to come inside, Tommy called her name.
“Y/N you’re needed downstairs.” Tommy informed her, but he knew her too damn well. When Ada told him that Y/N was taking a minute on her own, he knew she wasn’t comfortable about something.
“What happened?” He asked patiently. She shook her head, not wanting to make a scene. “Hey, hey.. come here.”
It was everything, her pregnancy, her nerves, the bloody hormones, mood swings, worry to make everything perfect… him.
“I hope you don’t take personally what happened earlier, I was looking for someone that wasn’t invited.” Tommy explained.
Y/N looked at him tentatively. She walked into the en-suite bathroom to wet a cloth and press it into the back of her neck, careful enough to not get a stain in the dress, he followed her steps and took a seat on the edge of the bathtub. The familiarity and comfort between them was too personal.
“Is this why you’ve been acting distant the last couple of days?”
With a sigh, he nodded. “Yes, I act like this when I’m scared.”
Y/N turned around pondering into his words, giving him time and space to speak on his own terms.
“I need to make sure you’re away from this business. I don’t want you to get involved at all. Do you understand?”
“Tommy what’s happening?” It all made sense to her now, the secret phone calls, the late night drives, his mood.
“The less you know, the better.” He cleared his throat. “Promise me you won’t make something stupid.”
Y/N rolled her eyes, he was the one always making the bad decisions she wanted to say instead.
“You won’t get involved.” He was firm about his statement.
“Only if you promise to be safe.” Y/N retorted.
“I’ll try my best.” A soft smile played on his lips.
She mirrored the smile and followed him outside, to join their guest one more time.
“Mr. Shelby! This is a wonderful party.” Mrs. Lewis praised, she was the wife of a former major, a bit extravagant, she loved to show off. “And a beautiful house.”
“I appreciate your words. But all the credit goes to Y/N.”
“So the old wives tale is real huh? That babies come with a bunch of blessings.” She squinted her eyes happily at Y/N’s baby bump, then looked back at Tommy. “Congratulations! I wish this baby nothing but the best.”
Y/N opened her mouth to correct her, and clarify that Tommy wasn’t the father. But Tommy cut her out.
“Thanks, hopefully you’ll be able to help us with the fundraising.”
“I’ll tell family and friends, you can count on that Mr. Shelby.”
As the woman disappeared, Y/N turned her face around to look at him.
“Let people talk, they’re going to do it anyways.” He stated, then as a waiter passed by, he took a glass of whiskey from the tray. “Rule number two; never reveal the truth when they can barely deal with a half truth.”
“What’s number one?”
“Oh, I’d tell you… but then I’d have to kill you and I’d be kind of sad you know?” He winked at her and elegantly strode towards where the music band was playing to grab the microphone.
“Good evening everyone, thank you for joining us tonight. As some of you may know, the Shelby Foundation Institute will open doors in a couple of weeks, we’re sure with this project we’ll be able to help many many children in need, grant them the education their parents can’t afford and a safe environment to learn and develop the abilities that’ll will help them in a near future.” A round of applauses filled the room and Tommy thanked the guest with a small nod. “Your contribution is highly appreciated, it will allow us to complement and provide everything that’s needed. I can assure you, your money will be well spent and we’re more than open to welcome you any time at the Institution.” His eyes started moving across the room. “Last but not least, I’d like to thank to the responsible of this project, the one who since day one showed a genuine interest and despite the doors that were closed in her face, she never backed down until this was a reality. Y/N thank you for everything you’ve done.” Raising his glass in her direction, he recognized her effort and compromise.
Blushing from getting all the attention towards her momentarily, she started biting her lip.
When Tommy started walking, people over to the side, making something similar to a human wall and leaving a space free for him to walk until he reached Y/N.
“Dance with me?”
The gesture took her by surprise, but soon Tommy’s arm wrapped around her waist and he started swaying to the beat of the music.
“Everything is perfect, thank you for taking care of every little thing.” He admitted with a very rare smile.
Carefully to not make Y/N dizzy, Tommy spun her around, following the music beats.
“Thank you for taking us in.” Y/N replied as a wide smile spread on her lips.
Feeling like nothing she could say or do was enough to thank Tommy. She’d be in debt with him for the rest of her life.
“You’ve nothing to-” he started to say but she cut him off.
“I do, every single time I blink, I feel so grateful to have you in my life.”
Tommy gave her hand a squeeze. “If things were different… wouldn’t you do the same?”
“Yes.” She admitted in a heartbeat.
“Then this better be the last time you thank me.” He raised an eyebrow as a warning, but his eyes remained giving her a gentle look. “I know you’d do the same thing for me.”
One more careful spin and the piece was done. A round of applause filled the room and the background noises brought them back to reality.
“I’ve to go, stay here, stay safe.” Tommy stated. “You know what to do in case something bad happens.”
He had already showed her where to hide in case anyone broke into Arrow House. It wasn’t his favorite outcome, but he had assured her it was for the best of she was prepared. Luckily he hadn’t show her how to use a weapon, but she knew the day might be closer than she thought.
“Tommy…” her heart started hammering her ribcage, she could feel it in her ears too. “Promise me you’ll be safe.”
The look of worry he found in her eyes made him fight the lump in his throat. If something happened to him, what would she do? Who would protect her? Who’d look after her and the baby?
“Will do. This is the last ilegal business, you know I want to make it right.”
Clearing his throat, he looked around finding Arthur giving him a nod, they were ready to go.
“I’ll be back before you know it.” He assured her once more.
As a different music started to play, Y/N went on to search for her grandmother.
Meanwhile, downstairs Lizzie was crying and smocking in such a bad shape after having a word with Michael about Angel, she started shouting when she heard what they did to his restaurant, she was fuming.
“Miss Stark can I help you?” Mary asked, smoothing her apron.
“Do you’ve a gun? So I can shoot someone?” Lizzie wiped her nose.
“No ma’am.” Mary took a step closer. “May I ask what happened?”
“The Shelbys blew my boyfriend’s restaurant so he couldn’t come to the party.” She tried to smooth the black mascara under her eyes.
And she started to whine and bent into the maid all she knew about the stupid rivalry between the Shelby’s and the Changretta’s.
Mary ignored Lizzie’s past, she only knew she was her master’s secretary, so she felt naturally bad for the green-eyed woman.
“I don’t get it, Thomas gets to have the little happy family with Y/N and also dictate who am I able to be involved with.”
“But they aren’t a family, the baby isn’t Mr. Shelby’s.” Mary dropped an unexpected bomb.
Lizzie stared at her in disbelief, her jaw dropping.
“Are you sure?”
“The motives of why he keeps her under his protection are unknown to me, but he isn’t the father of that baby.” The housekeeper assured her.
Lizzie nodded automatically, processing the news and thinking how this piece of information changed a lot of things.
“So Y/N is a little slut after all.” She mumbled to herself, planning in her mind a couple of ideas that would tear down that facade of integrity and good morals Y/N carried around like a crown. A woman’s reputation meant much more than anything.
And of course, it didn’t match the wealthy people standards.

The house was quiet, it was probably pretty late by now, but at least the initial commotion was calmer now. Tommy’s eyes focused on the flame flickering on the bedside table, the room was quiet. Then his eyes darted to Y/N… his best friend seemed so vulnerable, so small. He had seen the marks her father left on her back it was a horrible sight and now it looked worse. As if her life wasn’t complicated enough by the unplanned pregnancy, Y/N would have to deal with the physical pain as well.
He studied Y/N’s face for a minute, taking in the swollen eyes from crying too much, his heart aches for her, she didn’t deserve to be treated like this. She held a special place close to his heart since they were kids.
“Do you’ve a minute?” Polly asked.
As she realized the doubt in her nephew’s eyes, she assured him that Y/N would sleep for a while. After cleaning her injuries and adding a strong ointment to the wounds on her back, Polly checked the baby and gave Y/N a tea to help her sleep.
Tommy gave Y/N one more look and covered her arm with the thin sheet, but was careful enough to not hurt her before he walked out of what was once Ada’s room in Watery Lane.
“What happened?” He found Polly downstairs stomping her cigarette on the ashtray. Earlier, she didn’t ask questions, she just rushed to take care of Y/N’s wounds just she had done so many times when they were kids, and eventually teenagers on the brick of trouble every time.
“Y/N is pregnant, the son of a bitch told her he wasn’t sure the baby is his.”
“And that’s why her father hit her like that?!” She asked scandalized. “He’s an animal.”
“How’s the baby, really?” He asked with genuine concern.
Polly sighed. “She was smart to offer her back, so the belt wouldn’t hit in any compromising area, but I’d keep her in bed just in case.” She suggested.
“Tommy,” Scudboat apologized for the interruption, “we found the vehicle, Scott has been hiding in the house, do you want the men to enter and get him?”
Leaning on the counter, Tommy considered his options for a few seconds. “No, keep someone watching his house at all times, he might try to escape.”
As the blinder left him again alone with his aunt, Tommy expressed out loud a decision he had already made.
“We can’t leave her alone Pol.” He clenched his jaw. “She’s on her own, that bastard just used her and her family won’t help her with the baby yo-you saw how they hurt her.”
“I know.” She added breathlessly stopping for a second as she got the kettle. “They turned their backs on her when she needed them the most.”
“Sort a doctor tomorrow morning to make sure they’ll be fine.”
“And then what?” Pol stared at him.
“I just got a house, still needs a few things… I can take Y/N there, because if she stays here, she’ll see her parents all damn day.”
“In the meantime if she needs another place, there’s my house as well.”
Tommy folded his arms against his chest and nodded profusely.
“Poor Y/N… she’ll have a hard time with people pointing fingers at her all the time.” Polly shook her head.
Tommy remembered the long stares and whispers over Ada, when she suddenly got married and started showing no long after. He had been forced to walk around with the gun in his hand for several weeks. They even kicked her out of a boutique once she tried buying a dress and Tommy had to stop by with a few men until his sister got the dress that she wanted.
“I’ll blind anyone who dares to do something against Y/N.” He stated firmly pouring some whiskey finally.
“What happened?” Finn asked looking from his brother to his aunt.
“If anyone asks,” Tommy pointed a finger at him, “you haven’t seen Y/N here alright?”
Finn frowned. “But I haven’t seen her.”
“Exactly.” Tommy agreed walking towards the fireplace, he added a few pieces of wood and then took a seat in front of it. Pondering on the previous events, worry installed on his shoulders of what might happen. Anger spreading on his body at the thought of his best friend being humiliated by her useless boyfriend, after all she had done for the prick and he had the audacity to doubt the baby was his. Thanks to her, Scott got the chance to be a blinder, and with that endless benefits.
One of his men knocked desperately and as Tommy went to see what was happening he heard the best news of the day.
“We followed Scott, he was at the train station.”
He took the remaining of his drink in a swing. “Was?”
“The boys took him to the warehouse, he had a ticket to escape.”
Tommy gave his aunt a look. “If Y/N wakes up, send someone to let me know.”
As Polly saw them disappear, her eyes darted upwards, in a silent prayer. She knew Scott wouldn’t live a day without regretting his decision. Taking her cup of tea with her, she decided to look for some clothes and clean sheets to provide to Y/N while they sorted everything out.
Y/N was considered part of the family, she and Tommy had always been close, in a way Y/N was the only person who could understand her nephew. The one who he trusted the most.
She decided to go to the church the following morning to light a candle and pray for Y/N and the baby.
Tumblr media
Taking a deep breath and one of her eyes cracked a bit open. As everything started to hurt so bad, her chest felt heavy as memories from what had happened hit Y/N hard. Word by word her parents had said replayed in her mind.
A single tear rolled down from her eye to her nose. With trembling fingers, Y/N moved one of her hands to the yet non-existent bump. It was still early to start showing but she couldn’t help but think her baby was starting to grow inside her.
Despite the circumstances, Y/N felt like giving her own life for this baby. It didn’t matter that Scott or her family decided to leave her.
Tommy opened the door carefully to not wake Y/N up, but to his surprise she was already awake.
“Go on… say it.” She was waiting for Tommy’s lecture.
Scott had turned his back just like her parents. All the people she thought she could rely on showed her to not take them for granted.
But Tommy shook his head.
“How are you feeling?” He asked taking the chair in the corner to place it next to the bed.
“Like a total failure.” She admitted with tears in her eyes.
“Y/N.” Tommy didn’t know what to say to make her feel better, to help her. “Hey, look at me.” He spoke softly and covered one of her hands with his own.
Y/N started biting the inside of her cheek to prevent more tears to come out. But looked at her best friend anyways.
“You’re not alone, I know you’ve a lot to take in at the moment… but you can count on me for everything.” He offered sincerely.
She didn’t feel worth any of this, she felt dirty, stupid for believing in Scott’s love words. How could she have been so naïve?
“Why?” Her voice broke. “Why do you want to help me when I’ve done everything wrong?”
“Don’t do this to yourself.” Tommy swallowed hard. “Don’t let them get in your head, I know how it is, but this isn’t your fault.”
“Of course it is! I gave myself away to Scott, I’m just another whore.”
Tommy lost his control, he didn’t want her to feel this way.
“You’re not a whore. You did it out of love and that’s not something to regret.”
“I deserve this, my father is right.” Y/N shook her head, she angrily wiped a tear away.
“No, you don’t deserve this shit happening. Y/N you’re a good woman an-”
Y/N’s grandmother asked if she could walk into the room. Tommy felt grateful for the interruption because he didn’t know how to deal this situation. He didn’t want to say that he had warned Y/N about her now ex boyfriend and make her feel worse than she already did.
“I’ll be downstairs if you need anything.”
At least he got a chance last night at the warehouse to make the bastard pay for playing with Y/N’s heart. Tommy made it very clear he better disappear from her life for good because if he ever saw him again, he wouldn’t let him walk twice alive.
He had been a few punches away from killing Scott. But the image of Y/N holding a baby in her arms stopped him… he wouldn’t be responsible for killing that baby’s father, even though Scott definitely deserved it. So he limited himself to leave a little warning, a message.
“This is a mess, Y/N feels so guilty for getting into this.” Tommy announced walking into the kitchen. He found his sister and aunt making breakfast.
Tommy’s eyes fixed on Karl and he was taken back in time to when Ada thought he had betrayed Freddie. He was a lot of things, but he’d never cause a pain like that to a child. At least not one of his own people.
From the beginning, he knew Scott was a piece of shit, but Y/N seemed so happy and thrilled, how would he step in to destroy her happiness? He never imagined he’d have to help her pick up the broken pieces of her heart. The sudden presence of Polly close to him made him snap back into reality, she stepped closer to help him light the cigarette that was hanging from his mouth.
Tommy moved his eyes towards his nephew, he was playing with a truck on the floor. Perhaps he was overthinking but he didn’t know what would he answer when Y/N’s child asked about his or her father.
“Ada would you talk to Y/N?”
“About what?”
“When you got pregnant…” he began with embarrassment in his eyes to talk about that. “It’s something similar.”
They’ve come a long way ever since, but Tommy still regretted the time they spent apart. Family was everything to him.
“And what do you want me to say Tommy? Her boyfriend dumped her, it’s not the same I got married.”
He sighed in frustration. “I just want Y/N to feel our support.”
“You’re going to make her feel overwhelmed! I know how noisy you can be.” Ada protested.
Tommy scoffed, he felt offended by his sister’s words. He just wanted to help Y/N.
“I’ll talk to her.” Polly intervened placing some food on a tray to give Y/N.
“Thank you.”
Ada clicked her tongue and crossed her arms. Her eyes boring into her brother.
“What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
But Ada turned the corner of her mouth down and shuddered. “Nothing it’s just strange to see you go above and beyond for someone.”
As she walked out of the kitchen, Tommy found himself thinking of her words. She was telling the truth but… but how could he stand there and do nothing for Y/N?
He knew her like the palm of his hand, she had been by his side since forever, encouraging him to follow his dreams, telling him the truth right in his face when he messed up. Even he didn’t want to hear it.
There was no other way to do this, she’d have his entire support through the pregnancy and whatever she might need afterwards.
“Mr. Shelby!” Y/N’s grandmother shouted from upstairs.
Tommy skipped a few steps and when he reached Ada’s old room, he found Polly holding Y/N’s hair back, she had been sick and her grandmother was trying to hold her trembling body.
“I’m sorry Pol. Sorry.”
“Why are you sorry for? With everything you’ve been through it’s not a surprise your stomach can’t handle food. Tommy help me here.” His aunt asked him to take her place so Y/N could use his strength as support. “Take her to that chair, while I sort this out.”
Following Polly’s instructions, Tommy lead Y/N carefully to the chair in the corner while his aunt and Y/N’s grandma changed the bedsheets. Ada joined them a moment later with a glass of water. “Try some crackers, it helped me with sickness during my pregnancy.” She offered taking the sheets downstairs.
Y/N groaned feeling embarrassed and mortified for everything. As soon as she smelled the food her stomach protested, but she felt bad for telling Polly something so she decided to just eat the food. But the moment she got the first bite, she couldn’t help it and it ended in her throwing up and making a mess.
“I want to thank you for taking care of her.” Y/N’s grandmother admitted taking her hand.
“I was just thinking…” Tommy started to say, “You could come with me to the new place I got.” Then he turned to face her grandmother. “It’s outside the city, away from curious eyes and it’s surrounded by trees.”
“No.” Y/N stated.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea dear.” Her grandma smiled at Tommy. “Fresh air could help her.”
Y/N sighed frustrated with herself, with the situation.
“Think about it, yeah?” Tommy suggested. “That way you won’t run into your parents everyday, and you can walk to the lake to relax.”
“He’s right.” Her grandma approved. “You’ll feel grateful to be away from the drama.”
“Perfect! Looks like you got it all figured out Tommy.” She snapped. “Just like my mother who wanted to send me to her aunt’s farm.”
She knew this wasn’t fair, he was the only one offering support, but she couldn’t help it, she felt on the brick, like everything was falling apart. And she was angry with herself.
Polly pushed Tommy away and gently grabbed Y/N’s arm. “Sweetheart all of this worry isn’t right for the baby. For the first time, I think going to that house is the best idea.”
“Unfortunately your choices are limited my darling.” Y/N’s grandma spoke softly. “But you should know that these wonderful people are trying to help you.”
She was trying to be strong, to pretend this didn’t hurt her, but truth is he world was crashing down. And this was only the beginning.
That seemed to click on Y/N’s mind because she gave a small nod, he lower lip gave in and it started quivering, then the tears started to fall down her cheeks.
“Thank you so much.” Y/N sobbed. “I’m so sorry.” Emotions took over her.
Her grandma pulled her in for a hug, wrapping her arms protectively around her just like she did when she was a child. “The Lord removed some people from your life but look at the angels he placed right away.”
Tommy saw Polly dabbing the corner of her eyes with her sleeve.
“This baby will grow surrounded by people who really love him or her.” He assured her.
“Now how about I help you take a bath? The doctor should arrive shortly.” Polly offered rubbing her back.
Her grandma squeezed between them. “I better go, said I was going to church.”
“Thank you for coming gran.” Y/N gave her a tight hug.
As they moved to get things done, Polly stopped her nephew before he could walk downstairs. “You’re brave for helping her like this.”
“I can’t leave her on her own.” He tried to explain, but Polly interrupted him.
“Your mother raised you right.” She then, in an unexpected move touched his shoulder. “She’d be proud of you.”

Finally got the chance to start reading this story and my!!! @brummiereader 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 it was so bloody good! I wasn’t ready for the turmoil it would cause.
You did a terrific job portraying Y/N’s sadness, the disconnection she felt from her baby, how impossible it was to get him to settle and the doubts of her husband being with someone else… woah it hit me hard I kept thinking poor Y/N she’s dealing with too much by herself (I know back then it wasn’t diagnosed but it could’ve been postpartum depression and to think how many women dealt with this too)
when the light of your son's bedroom suddenly turned on in the far distance and the loud call of your name from the depths of your husband's lungs resonated throughout the grounds. There was no going back now, it was done. They were better off without you. -No! My heart broke after reading this 💔
And then when she sees her son from afar from a completely different side after having it all. 😭 but I wasn’t expecting Tommy to fin her! Can’t wait for the next part
MASTERLIST
Unchained Melody (Part One)
Tumblr media
Summary: It had been almost two years since you had become overwhelmed by motherhood, fleeing from both your husband and son in attempts to escape the suffocating blanket of worries and self-doubt that had enveloped you. With a life now filled with poverty, you scrimp and save every shilling, every penny to make the costly weekly journey to catch a glimpse of your son from afar at the market. But your usual Sunday trip back to Birmingham suddenly turns your life upside down for a second time when you are unexpectedly faced with the presence of your husband and his refusal to let you do anything but return to Arrow house, back to him and your son.
Warnings: Language, angst, smut, mutual pining, postpartum depression
Word count: 4993
Authors Note: This series is inspired by another oldie but goldie, "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers. Tommy's feelings will be heavily influenced by the lyrics of this melodic and timeless song throughout the story. The song Y/N sings to William is an old British classic called "I do like to be beside the seaside" .
Tumblr media
"Calling at Birmingham New Street ladies and gentlemen, Birmingham New Street " the ticket conductor shouted walking briskly along the carriageway, going from coach to coach announcing the last and final call. One year, seven months and fifteen days. You thought to yourself picking at the frayed upholstered chair you was sitting on as a single solemn tear slipped over the curve of your cheek down into your lap, escaping the pools of your eyes too quickly for you to brush away. Not now Y/N. Don't start. You scolded yourself, not wanting to bring your fellow passengers' attention to your escaping emotions as you let yourself sink into the guilt you had been keeping tightly against your chest for almost two years, keeping it hidden from the vicious judgment and critical eyes it was undoubtedly worthy of as you did every Sunday you made the journey back to Birmingham, every Sunday you desperately tried to get a glimpse of your son from afar. Brushing the steady flow of tears from your face, you turned your head to the window, wiping the condensation that had built up on the tempered glass to see your reflection staring back at you, cruelly forcing you to see what you had become. Ragged clothing, unkempt hair and chapped hands, reddened from the countless hours you had worked night and day laundering linen for people that resembled your former self. You were unrecognisable, a far cry from the woman you once were, the wife and mother you once were. Broken and beaten, you were barely getting by with the hand life had dealt you. How had it come to this?
Nineteen and half months ago...
"He's crying darling. Y/N?" Tommy said, walking into the nursery after a relentless day in the city to find you in the rocking chair, aimlessly looking out the window as your son wailed loudly in your arms. You were starting to worry him. He'd been so occupied trying to make things legitimate for his new family that the long days he had spent with his head buried in paperwork were slowly turning into long sleepless nights stuck within the four walls of his office. The birth of his son had ignited an unstoppable force within him to keep the two people he loved the most safe and away from the wickedness of the world he himself played a role in, all at the behest and advice of those around him. He just had one more thing to do, one more thing to finalise, then he would stop. He'd promised himself.
"Tommy..." You muttered, blankly looking up at him as he took William from within your hold, the sudden quietness from his father's comforting warm arms snapping you out of your trance-like state. "He's hungry" you said as you picked up the small brown bear among all the various necessities needed to care for a child of only four months. "He just...he won't feed properly. Won't settle" you huffed, internally blaming yourself as you wiped the front of your blouse, reaching for your son, then suddenly recalling, afraid if you took him he'd start crying again. Was it you that unsettled him?
"He dropped his bear love, that's all. Maybe getting some teeth as well, ey little man?" Tommy said, looking at William as he tried to diffuse the criticism you were undoubtedly burdening yourself with. "Hey, c'mere" Tommy sighed, pulling you into his arms, pressing his lips to the crown of your head as tears welled in your eyes. You were slowly drifting away from him, he could feel it. But with Tommy being a man true to his time, he felt powerless as to what to do, what to say. Stiff upper lip, keep calm and carry on. The British way...maybe the wrong way. You'd pull through, wouldn't you? "We'll fetch him some warm cow's milk or a wet nurse, so you can get some sleep"
"No. No Tommy!" You angered quickly at the mere suggestion of anyone but you feeding your son, determined to battle through whatever it was that had a grasp on you without aid. "You think I'm a bad mum, don't you? You think I can't look after him?" you sobbed, your temper and fatigue spilling over into an angry display of pointing fingers and high emotions. You knew you were being unfair, you just...you couldn't help it. You needed an outlet for your mounting frustration, and unfortunately for Tommy he had the unlucky pleasure of being at the receiving end of it.
"Darling, I never said..." Tommy huffed, before you took your son back into your arms and your position in the rocking chair, your eyes fixing on a small light in the distance beyond the grounds of Arrow House as Williams bottom lip wobbled and his whimpers resumed. What would he do without you? Tommy reflected, a sudden feeling of guilt washing over him for all the nights he had spent away as he watched you in admiration, humming a soothing tune to his son, your fingers stroking gently over the curve of his ear and massaging the soft cushioned lobe until his cries quietened and he fell asleep. You were just tired, the small surprise weekend away in Blackpool he had planned in a few days time for the three of you would see an end to your worries. Sea air and sandy beaches, just what any doctor would order. Then he'd stop, he'd try harder. He'd promised himself.
" Fuck baby...you feel so good" Tommy moaned against your ear, his labored breath hot against your skin. "Let me make you feel good eh?" He said breathlessly, sliding his finger down between you both as he pressed on the small bundle of nerves swollen from his thrusts. Just relax. You told yourself. And for the love of god, stop fucking thinking too much. You berated yourself once again as you closed your eyes, a feeling of guilt pooling in your stomach from the little attention and affection you had given your husband since the birth of your son. One month since you were last intimate, one full month since you had let him get close to you. Had he been with someone else? Your brain quickly panicked at the thought of him with another woman when a hard thrust from Tommy had you moaning into his shoulder, your hands threading through his soft hair as he kissed down your neck sending a ripple of goosebumps over your body.
"Wait...Tommy not there" you pulled his head up as his tongue swiped over your nipple. "Shit" you huffed as a trickle of milk flowed down your cleavage whilst you frantically scrambled for the freshly laundered sheets to wipe away your embarrassment.
"Y/N, darling, it's ok" Tommy chuckled, kissing tenderly around your swollen breast as he rocked his hips into you, his thrusts suddenly intensifying when his eyes darted down to between you both. "Stop. Let me see you" he said, pushing your self-conscious hands away from shielding your stomach from the small scars you bared from nine months of carrying his child. " Fuck sweetheart...look at you" He moaned watching himself drive in and out of you, his wet length glistening, the sight sending a surge of pleasure through his throbbing cock. He's so into it. Why? Was he just saying these things, was he thinking of another woman? Your mind plagued you as you reluctantly kept your hands by your side. You felt like shit, looked worse than shit. That and your mind was elsewhere, to a never ending timetable of feeds and nappy changes you seemed incapable of getting right. As the room filled with the moans of your husband and the sound of his body basking in the awaited comfort of you he'd been patiently longing for, your eyes drifted over his lean shoulders to your suitcase covered by the netted curtains of your grand bedroom window. With the sudden fear that you had already made your decision, you turned your head to your husband, crashing your lips onto his as you held tightly onto his broad frame. Would this be the last time? The last time you felt the weight of his body on top of yours?
"Tommy..." you whimpered, a tear falling down the side of your cheek, desperate to tell him how much you were struggling as he gasped at your sudden eagerness, unaware of your inner turmoil in the throes of his own pleasure as a surge of electricity fueled by adoration pumped through his body, his imminent high quickly approaching. With every part of you clutching onto him, tightly clenching you both to a daze of heightened arousal, you let go, loudly crying your husband's name.
" Fuck...i'm gonna, Y/N I'm..." Tommy moaned incoherently into the curve of your neck as his fingers dug into the soft flesh of your thigh and his hips came to a sudden stop, releasing the built up tension he had been desperate to be rid of inside the tight warmth of your body with a shaky groan leaving his lips. "We've still got it eh?" Tommy chuckled breathlessly moments later as he settled down beside you, pulling you into his strong hold.
"Still" you replied quietly as you turned your head to look at him." I love you" you said longingly, your voice catching in your throat as you buried your face into his chest, hiding the shame in your eyes of the choice you knew you had made.
" I love you too. Y/N what's..." He said, tilting your chin up to look at him, cutting his words off and what he really wanted to ask, as the glazed over look in your eyes sent an uncomfortable heavy feeling of worry to the pit of his stomach. The far-away look in your eyes frightening him more than any enemy he had ever come up against. You were just tired, he'd call Polly tomorrow morning to come and help you with the baby. Tommy reassured himself as he held you tightly in his arms, his hand cupping the side of your head as he pressed a yearning kiss to your temple. This weekend would fix everything.
" Y/N...baby's crying..." Tommy mumbled half asleep as he rolled over, so used to you being the first to bolt up and hurry to your sons' whimpers. A dairy cow in human form, a living comforter to aid your son to sleep. You couldn't help but feel as you rubbed the fatigue from your dry eyes, another surge of guilt hurtling your way for thinking such things.
"Shhh darling, mummy's here" you said flatly as you approached his bassinet, picking him up and cradling him in your arms. "Please William, please stop crying. I'm so tired, I'm..." you sobbed, caressing his soft skin as you placed the tip of your finger to his mouth for him to suckle on. "What do I do? Help me William" you cried quietly in desperation, rocking him back and forth in your arms as you looked up at the ceiling, tears streaming down your face, your mind absent from the fact you were doing it, you were doing everything any mother would do in an attempt to soothe their child. Why couldn't you see it? "I don't know what's wrong with me" you sobbed to yourself, sniffing away the tears as you looked down at your son, his finger holding tightly onto yours as Frances the housekeeper listened outside the nursery door, her hand firmly enclosed around the handle, every part of her wanting to enter and magic your distress away. The thousand yard stare, they called it. She had seen it with her sister after the birth of her niece and then she saw it with you, the moment Tommy returned to work, popping your little bubble of the three of you lying in bed blissfully happy within the comfort of one another. She'd talk to Tommy in the morning. She promised herself as she backed away from the door, and back to her duties. She promised.
"Oh I do like to be beside...the seaside. Oh I do like to be beside the sea" you sang quietly, your bottom lip wobbling with each passing word. "I love you, I love you so much" you cried as you placed your son back into his cot, pulling out your handkerchief with your name embroidered delicately in the center for him to hold, hoping the scent of you engraved into the light fabric would comfort him in your absence." I'm sorry William, I...I can't be the mother you need " you sobbed as his little fingers clutched around the small piece of cotton. "Daddy will look after you, better than I can" you said as you bent down, placing a tender kiss to his head. "I just need a little break, a small one. I'll be back, I promise" Your voice broke, tears streaming down your cheeks as you gently glided your finger over his ear, caressing his soft skin and gently lulling him into sweet dreams and slumber. "Goodbye my love, my sweet, sweet boy" you cried, turning to the door and shutting it as a searing pain shot through your chest, through your shattered heart and the unbreakable bond a mother shares with her child, tearing and fraying from what you was about to do. Would you ever be able to come back from this?
"Come back to bed darling..." Tommy mumbled as you stood beside him, running your hands through the top of his hair, a quiet moan escaping his lips in response to your gentle touch as he lazily reached for your hand before his weighted eyes and tired body drifted him back into a heavy sleep.
"Soon Tommy..." You replied, muffling your sobs as you picked up your suitcase and turned to the door, glancing back one last time to your husband, to the love of your life. Meters away, it may as well have been miles. You thought to yourself as you came to the end of the long driveway of your home when the light of your son's bedroom suddenly turned on in the far distance and the loud call of your name from the depths of your husband's lungs resonated throughout the grounds. There was no going back now, it was done. They were better off without you.
Present day...
"Fuck sake" you mumbled quietly, hiding your face in your shoulder as you frantically wiped your tears away from the memory of the night when you abandoned your family and your former self. As you cursed yourself for being being so weak, so feeble, the small girl seated opposite you scrunched her brow in confusion, her little thoughts plagued with worry as to what had you so upset, as her mother, who looked as tired and weighed down with her own misgivings, sent you a sympathetic knowing smile.
"Hardly the time and place to let one's emotions get the better of them, this is public transport not a woman's bloody wash house" a man seated next to you clothed in the finest of suits grumbled rolling his eyes, begrudging the fact the train was not divided by class when the engine suddenly came to a stop and the mother ushered her daughter out of the carriage giving the gentleman a stern look, all while her daughter conveniently stepped onto, rather than other the pompous man's foot dirtying his perfectly polished loathers. "The little..." He spat as he folded his newspaper in half, turning to face you as if you had a role in the small girls worthy retribution. "Thiefs, whores and murderers. What would one except from this dump they call the second-biggest city in England" he seethed looking at you from head to toe as you stood to leave when he crassly stuck his foot out, causing you to fall face first onto the grimy train floor as a satisfied scoff left his lips. You were nothing to him, a beggar, the scum of the slums of the city he reluctantly found himself in. With no will or want to confront him about what you believe you undoubtedly deserved, you stood up, wiping the front of your dress down and adjusting your hat with only one thing on your mind...your son.
" Excuse me...please, excuse me" you said, pushing your way through the bustling market. You were already late, and with only the briefest of opportunities to get a glimpse of your child until another full seven days passed, and he made his Sunday outing with Frances again, you were desperate to see him. Standing by a stall filled with seasonal fresh fruits and juices you adjusted your woven hat, pushing the knotted strands of hair behind your ears in attempt to make yourself look proper, more presentable. Who were you kidding, you were but a ghost in a crowd full of people. Your disheveled appearance your only shield and cover from any potential sightings of yourself that could be relayed back to your husband. If he cared to know. You thought to yourself as you raised your head, your breath suddenly catching in your throat. There he was, your William. Watching from a distance, you followed his small wobbly steps, his hand holding tightly onto France's as the sun beamed down on them, heading with determination to the market stall he made a beeline for every Sunday. Perching yourself on a large wooden barrel next to a shelf of neatly stacked bottles of cider, you smiled as your shaky fingers came up to cover the joy on your lips as your former housekeeper picked up your son and showed him all the various jars of sweets and lollipops his wondrous eyes were beaming at. "Barley Sugars" you whispered, a small laugh leaving your lips as he pointed to his favorite and only choice of sweets whilst Frances tried to coax him into trying something different, when a smartly dressed man stood beside them turned around. Tommy.
"Barley Sugars again, eh?" Tommy chuckled, nodding to the stallholder as he reached into his pocket for a penny, smiling lovingly at the boy that resembled you more with each passing day. Wha...what was he doing here? You panicked at the unexpected sight of your husband, the last time being the night you had left him sleeping soundly in your shared bed. With shaky legs and your panicked eyes darting frantically around the market for any of his men, you slid off the barrel stumbling backwards into the shelf of cider, causing a small commotion of crashing glass and spilled beverages.
"You'll 'av to pay for that, miss" The seller frowned, waving his finger at you as he came marching around his stall to your trembling body frantically picking up the shattered glass, apologising profusely for the days' takings and mess you had made. With unsteady feet you stood up, your eyes cast down at the muddied ground, unable to meet the piercing stare you could already feel boring into you with every stifled breath that left your lips.
"Y/N..." Tommy whispered as he steadied himself against the wooden frame of the market stand, his knees buckling, his eyes widening in disbelief as time and everything around him suddenly slowed to an abrupt stillness, his ears deafening him with a piercing high-pitched whistle. "Y/N" he voiced louder, as the sound of the teeming market entered his muffled eardrums and your sheepish eyes finally met his." Y/N" Tommy called your name again as he pushed through the crowds of people, his eyes fixed on you as you started walking backwards, tears welling in your eyes from the panic firmly setting in."Y/N Shelby!" His voiced boomed into the crisp spring air, gaining everyone's attention, his brisk pace turning into a quickened run as he stumbled past people in a frantic attempt to get to you. "No! Don't you dare!" He bellowed, fear tightening in his chest as he watched you turn and run out of the market when he misplaced his foot and fell forward, tripping over the curb of the path as the end of your dress glided behind the corner of the bricked wall and out of sight.
" Shit...shit!" You sobbed running through the cobbled streets as you scanned the neighborhood in a frenzy of labored breaths and hysterical cries for somewhere to hide. What was he doing here?
" Hey, hey!" Tommy said, turning the corner onto the street you had been on mere seconds ago as he grabbed the arm of a young boy running past him with a hoop and stick in his hand. "Have you...have you seen a girl, in a...a dark red dress" Tommy asked breathlessly, whilst his mind frantically tried to make sense if what he saw was real, if you were real.
"That way, Mister" the rosy-cheeked child replied, pointing to a back alley leading to a row of terraced houses before running off to his friends that were patiently waiting for him at the bottom of the street. With shaky steps Tommy ran across the road, raising his hand in apology to a car and it's horn blaring at him from the near collision his dazed state caused. With his hands trembling, and his breath held within the tight confines of his burning lungs, Tommy turned the corner. And, there you were.
"Tommy..." You sobbed, backing up against the roughness of the slabbed wall as he stood in front of you, his own eyes welling with the unspent tears he'd been holding in for the past two years in an attempt to push away the reality of your absence.
"You're dead...I..." he said, his voice catching in his throat as he stepped closer, his brow furrowing in confusion at the acceptance he had surrendered to, now thrown into a disarray. " I.. I thought you were dead" he muttered in front of you as you shook your head, the back of his hand coming up to gingerly stroke across your cheek as the soothing coolness of his wedding band he couldn't bare to part with brushed along your delicate skin. But as the initial shock slowly started to fade, Tommy's jaw suddenly tightened and his gentle touch dug into your skin, his fingers twisting in anger as the creases of his brow deepened and the fury of feeling fooled took over. "I thought you were fucking dead!" He snapped through gritted teeth grabbing your chin, his grip painfully pushing into your flesh as he pressed his forehead to yours and his own tears spilled over between the curves of your cheeks. "Fuck!" He bellowed pushing your face away in disgust as he stumbled back to the wall opposite you, pulling his peaked cap from his head to cover his face as his body forced the contents of his stomach up onto the bricked floor. For months he had believed you had killed yourself, thrown yourself in the cut. And for months he blamed himself, burdening his body and mind with the responsibility of your death. The realisation and shock of you being alive was too much for his body to comprehend, even for someone as hardened to life as himself. " I thought you were dead..." Tommy wept quietly as he turned his head away from you, his reserved demeanour crumbling apart, leaving a man broken and tired from two years of heartbreak in its wake.
" Tommy I'm sorry, I..." You sobbed, approaching him as he put his hand out to stop you.
" No. You don't get to do that. You don't get to fucking say sorry" he sniffed back his tears cutting off your meek attempt to apologise as he stood up wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, his disheveled hair hanging over the perspiration sticking to his forehead." Why?" His voice wobbled barely above a whispered as he searched your eyes for an answer, his back pressed firmly against the brick wall to stop his legs from finally giving in as the adrenaline that had been pumping furiously through his veins slowly dispersed and fatigue took over.
" I couldn't do it anymore Tommy, I..."
" Mummy!" a little voice caught your attention as you turned your head and your eyes widened in disbelief at the sight of your son in Frances' arms mere feet from you, his little hands reaching desperately for you as Tommy watched your panicked reaction, a scoff catching in his throat when your eyes sheepishly darted away from your son and back to him.
"Mrs Shelby..." France's voice broke as her hand flew to her mouth and tears pooled in her eyes at the sight of you standing before her. For she believed as everyone else did, that the poor Mrs Shelby had succumbed to her troubles and parted from this world, now free of her tormented mind.
" Take William to the car, Frances" Tommy ordered turning away, adjusting his coat and demeanour as he breathed heavily through his mouth, every part of him desperately trying to regain some form of composure.
" Mummy! Mummy!" Your son wailed as your eyes brimmed with tears, and you apprehensively stepped towards him with your hands out when Tommy hurried between you both, and you came face to face with the remnants of his anger firmly etched on his face once again. He didn't trust you. Your initial reaction to seeing William not good enough of one for your husband who was now evaluating your every move, your every word.
" Mummy's coming, isn't she?" Tommy said, grabbing you by your arm as he waited for a response, his jaw tightening at every passing second as his patience grew thin, unwilling to let you go, unwilling to give you an option. "Isn't she?"
" Yes" you whispered, nodding your head as Frances hurried to the car with William wailing loudly in her arms.
" Look at you" Tommy said, glaring at you from head to toe, his words laced in disdain as he took off your hat, throwing it to the muddied ground with despise. Disheveled clothes, matted hair and muddied fingers. He had given you the world, given you a warm home, anything you could have wished for and yet you chose this, a life of labor and poverty over him and your son. With a mind clouded with fury, Tommy was doing what he promised he'd never do to all the gods he had prayed to, all his ancestors he had pleaded to if they would just grant him one thing, and bring you back into his arms. He was judging you.
" Wh...why is he calling me mummy?" you said, sobbing as you hurried alongside Tommy's quickened pace, his hand still painfully grasped onto your arm, dragging you with him to the car. William was only four months old when you left, he didn't know who you were, did he? " Tommy?"
"Just fucking move Y/N" Tommy said, opening the car door and pushing you in, slamming it behind him with enough force to frighten William into tears again. " Frances, please" Tommy sighed pinching his brow, his elbows resting on the steering wheel as William cried loudly in the back of the car. As Frances tended to your child, searching for his brown bear she feared he may have dropped in all the commotion, you kept your eyes fixed firmly ahead of you, your hands clasped in your lap not daring to look at anyone as shame engulfed you and reality hit home that you would now have to face not only what you did but everyone in your life you had left. Tommy had now plunged you head first back into a world you had abandoned without an ounce of sympathy or understanding, the anxiety of what awaited you was becoming unbearable.
Pulling up to Arrow house, the confines of the car were silent, and had been for the majority of the journey with William now soundly asleep in France's arms, the only audible noise being that of the muddied driveway of your forgotten home and the sound of Tommy's flesh gripping tightly onto the stirring wheel. He was furious, the moment he could have only dreamed of as he sought solitude in the pits of grief now engulfed with hatred. As Tommy and Frances exited the car, you stood seated, panic suddenly enveloping you, your body unable to move as you watched the familiar faces of the grounds men coming to a halt as they squinted into the car and at your face they thought they'd never see again. You wanted to run, not from the heavy weight bearing down on your heart but run from their critical eyes and the things you were sure you could hear them saying.
" Get out" Tommy said opening your door, pulling you out and marching you to the front of your once, shared home.
" Tommy" a lady beamed upon seeing him as she waited in the foyer, her dark brown locks cut into a bob bouncing on her shoulders with every step she took as your husband stormed through the grand entrance with your arm grasped tightly between his fingers. "And who's this?" she frowned looking at you from head to toe, her assumptions of you firmly setting in stone from your appearance alone. A thief no doubt, or a whore. She thought turning her nose up at you as her crimson nails curled into her palms as she crossed her arms, ready to have you thrown off the grounds or better, dumped in a ditch. You had no place in this grand house, in the house she was now not only the governess of, but a woman that the maids and workers believed had wormed her way into ruling the manor Tommy had abandoned his interest and care for to the grief of losing you. " Well, who are you?"
" She's my wife"

Summary: Y/N is “forced” to leave her husband and baby for the weekend, so join Tommy to sort parenthood by himself for a couple of days. How will he deal with everything? Including a fussy baby.
Word count: 2.5K
A/N: we know I try to make moodboards right? 🤭

“Okay, erm so there’s milk storage enough.” Y/N mumbled, taking one more look around the bedroom. “Emma’s nappies are in the first drawer, keep her bunny close to-“
“Her face, I know.” Tommy produced a small chuckle, trying hard not to roll his eyes as he had already heard his wife’s instructions for almost a week. “Love, just leave that there, take a deep breath and have a margarita for me, we’ll be fine.”
Looking down at his six-month old he found her big beautiful eyes staring at him.
Y/N blinked nervously, this was the first trip away from Emma, it’s was a natural thing to be nervous.
“I can’t drink a margarita, remember?” She pointed at her breasts for a clearer message. Although she really wanted one.
This was actually her first real going out in a long time, somehow her life had been turned upside down full of baby trips to the doctor’s appointments, quick trips to get the groceries, restless nights of feedings. Thats why when Tommy insisted she should make the trip with Rose and the girls, she thought it would be a good idea to have a little time to herself.
But suddenly, her phone started ringing and loads of messages arrived simultaneously.
“Are you su-“
Tommy cut his wife’s words. “Yes, now go before Rose comes up to take you.”
Y/N gave Tommy a worried look, she couldn’t help it.
“Say goodbye to mama,” he waved Emma’s little hand. “Buh-bye mam!” He imitated a childish voice.
Y/N felt her heart clenching inside her chest when she kissed her daughter’s chubby cheeks.
“If you need anything just call and I’ll be back.” She rushed to say before kissing Tommy’s lips. Stepping out of their home, she blew them a kiss.
Tommy finally felt confident enough to release the air he had been holding. He was beyond nervous for not having his wife around whilst taking care of their baby, he was actually panicking to do anything wrong.
As Tommy closed the door he saw Emma’s lip quiver and a second later, she let out a big cry.
“Oh no, no darling don’t cry.” Tommy tried to soothe her. Small legs kicking with such force that made him think of a small tornado. “It’s alright, mama will be back in a couple of days…” he mumbled tried to get his daughter to settle.
His phone started buzzing in his pocket, he tried to rock Emma, but her cries became louder. Pressing the green button so fast that he didn’t look at the name on the screen.
“‘Lo?”
“Is Emma alright? I heard her crying.”
Tommy gasped. “Yes, of course, it’s the television… there’s a baby crying.” He lied.
He noticed Y/N’s hesitation so he rushed to assure her everything was fine and encouraged her to have a great time with her friends. Then, Tommy searched the channel with calm music Y/N used to rock Emma to sleep, in an attempt to settle his baby.
“How can a little thing like you cry so loud?” Tommy sighed defeated. He was one step from giving up. “I don’t know how your mama does it.”
He had tried everything, absolutely everything. And nothing seemed to work.
Was his baby sick? Hurting?
“What is it baby girl?” He wiped away the tears from her eyes, long lashes wet, chubby cheeks red from the intensity of her cries.
A sudden flashback appeared on his mind and with long strides, he walked into their bedroom hoping to find Emma’s bunny in its place. It had been a birth gift by Rose, and his daughter didn’t seem to like anything else.
“Look… here’s your bunny.” He tried tickling her cheeks. “And let’s take Mummy’s blanket alright?”
Tommy felt on the brick of desperation, was he really a useless father? One who couldn’t make his daughter stop crying?
His heart was aching.
Tommy wondered how would they survive for the entire weekend without Y/N. He started seriously doubting his parental skills in that moment.
Wrapping his baby in Y/N’s blanket seemed to bring some comfort for his baby. Groaning he covered his face with one of the thin cloths they used to go outside, it was small piece that only covered his features partially but then he heard a small giggle and a raspberry from Emma.
Startled, he removed the sheet from his face and looked down at what was making her giggle.
“You liked your silly daddy?” He asked mimicking a ridiculous voice.
He tried the trick once more.
And to his surprise, Emma giggled again, there was a bit of droll on her chin, big blue eyes sparkling just for him.
“You like Mr. Napkin?!” He asked in disbelief. “Yes you do!”
Getting up, he got a larger napkin from the kitchen and after covering his face again, but he added his glasses.
“Mr. Napkin needs help to see.” He repeated what it seemed like the best acting performance ever. “Oh! I see a beautiful happy little girl.” He turned to face his baby laying in one of his arms.
Emma laughed uncontrollably and kicked her legs happily.
“You know what? Mr. Napkin needs a smoke.” He announced, producing a cigarette from its case. But once he added it to his performance, he noticed a small pout. “Oh no, no… that’s a bad habit, don’t do it.”
Once he got his little girl to settle again, he sighed relieved when he saw the big yawn she offered.
“Mr. Napkin would like a nap too.”
But before he could close his eyes, his phone started ringing and the sound woke his daughter up.
“Shit. Alfie what do you want?”
“Just making sure you’re in one piece still… heard the Misus are having the time of their lives.” Alfie announced.
“I know you’re miserable when Rose is away, but I’m busy here mate.”
“That’s exactly why I was calling, to offer some child support.”
Tommy snorted. “Alfie the last thing I want is you taking care of my daughter.”
Alfie didn’t took that personally, he knew as a matter of fact that he had the opposite effect in Tommy’s daughter. “When will you finally admit your daughter likes me?”
“She likes pulling at you beard and your dog.”
“Look we both know you’re going to make the girls come back earlier from their trip and the least thing I need is having Rosie mad at me at your fault, so meet me and Cyril at the beach.”
“That sounds like an awful idea.”
“See ya.”
The actual plan worked like wonders, Emma was thrilled to spend time with Cyril, because being honest, he got all protective over Emma, and despite his size he acted like a cotton ball, bringing her sticks. But Tommy wasn’t going to admit that out loud.
Of course Alfie teased him endlessly for acting over protective towards the baby just because he made sure his daughter wouldn’t suffer damage from the sun. Or any kind of damage for that matter.
“What are cha gonna do when your little pumpkin starts messing around with boys and-“
Tommy gave him a death stare.
“Wha? You can’t keep her locked mate…” Alfie pointed out as the girl grabbed some sand in her small fist.
“That’s not going to happen.” Tommy answered with a clenched jaw.
Just the mere thought of it, made his insides twist.
And to Alfie, to have the chance to tease Tommy it was like the cherry on top, it was something he wasn’t going to let it pass.
By the time they went back to their apartment, Emma was sound asleep in the back seat.
After changing his baby girl into a pajama set, Tommy walked around the place to set the alarm and taking the remote, he turned off the lights.
To his surprise, he got a message from his wife.
Missing you both like crazy! xx
We missed you too, Emma was thrilled to take a little trip to the beach xx - he replied.
Almost immediately, his phone started ringing and the photo of his wife holding their baby appeared on the screen.
“I know I said I wasn’t going to disturb you, but…” her sweet voice made him smile.
“‘S alright, I was just getting ready to sleep.”
“But it’s still early.” Y/N pointed out turning around to look the hour.
“I am exhausted.” He dragged the words.
Turning the call into video, Y/N noticed the bags under his eyes. The dim light cascading over his cheekbones.
“Looks like someone’s having the time of her life.” He complimented.
“We had a massage and I ordered a virgin cocktail.”
Tommy shook his head. “No booze? What’s the fun in that?”
“Stop temping me.” Y/N pouted. “I’ll let you’ve some rest, tomorrow it’s going to be a long day.”
Tommy yawned and wished his wife a good night.
****
A babbling sound make him open his eyes asTommy tried to fix his blurred vision.
Groaning, he got up. “Morning, sunshine.” He kissed the top of her head as he pulled her against his chest and went back to bed.
Instinctively, Emma started nibbling his nipple.
“Oh sweetie, you won’t find anything there.” Tommy explained with a chuckle.
But Emma wasn’t in the mood and a round of loud cries started right away.
“I get it, the milk provider is moving right away, give me a sec.” He got up and carried his baby towards the kitchen, to prepare the bottle for her. A few minutes later, Emma was sucking happily.
“Such a drama queen eh?” He stared at her soft features. Wondering what life had in store for her. “What do you wanna do today? We can go to the park, or the pub bet your uncles would love to see you.” He proposed as his baby was focused on her milk. That way he could get some help because everyone in his family adored his daughter.
Despite his wealth, Y/N refused hiring a nanny. She was adamant to be in charge of everything related to their daughter. And being completely honest with himself, he was grateful for being able to spend quality time with his first born, Y/N deserved all the credit for that, she helped him feel comfortable by giving his daughter a warm bath and helping as much as he could, being a present father.
She had already threatened him to include a hairstyle masterclass so he could learn to do braids and pigtails.
After a quick bath for him and another one for his daughter. He felt proud of managing to put an asthetic outfit for Emma, he actually went safe with clear colors God forbid that one time he changed her into a set that didn’t match, Y/N scolded and teased him endlessly. As Tommy was looking in one of the drawers for a clean sheet so he could place his baby on the floor, he found a small box where Y/N kept a bunch of things she said that were useless but you might need some day. The thought made him chuckle, but a sharp movement opened the lid and its content fell to the floor.
That’s when he saw something that caught his attention.
A playful smile spread on his lips and he rushed to the living room to set everything.
It took him a while to carry on with his idea, but once he was finished, he stood there proudly to admire his creation, the smile on his daughter’s face told him he did a good job. Oh, the things he’d do for that little Miss Sunshine. She had him wrapped around her little finger.
Snapping a photo, he pressed a few buttons to send it to his wife.
Tumblr media
“What is that?!” Y/N asked raising her voice, excitement was evident.
Tommy’s chest expanded proudly as he looked at his mini-me in awe. “She’s being giggling nonstop.”
“This is the best idea ever!” Y/N sounded surprised, so he was still able to be one step ahead.
“Cheapest trick to keep her busy.” Tommy added, sending the photo to the Shelby’s chat group.
“I can’t wait to go back home.” He knew being away wasn’t easy for her, specially because she was so attached to Emma.
“The day will fly by and you’ll be back before you know it.” He tried to cheer her up. His eyes darting back to his daughter, still amazed by the balloons.
“Look at you, I leave you for a couple of days and you win the award parent of the year.”
“That’s what you get for abandoning us.” He joked.
“Hey!” Tommy heard Rose’s voice in the background. “Only emergencies! Is Tommy missing an arm?” He heard some weird noise and then she spoke clearly. “I hope you’re taking good care of Emma.”
“Of course.” He wasn’t sure if he should be more scared of his wife or Rose.
“Good, then were stealing your wife for another day and we’re already planning the next trip.” She warned, and this time around, it was Y/N turn in the background saying that she didn’t want to be away from her daughter again.
“Have a fabulous day, I gotta change a stinky nappy.”
Ending the call, he decided to order some food, the last thing on his mind at the moment was to prepare something. At least he got a great deal by keeping his daughter busy with the balloons and that granted him a few minutes to stand outside in the balcony to smoke a cigarette while keeping an eye on his baby.
And the rest of his day went just like that between naps, babbling and the little sounds his daughter made. Later he’d pick a book to read to her.
****
Sunday finally arrived and after driving for a couple of hours, the girls left her by the apartment lobby first, so she made the trip to her floor quietly and since she didn’t tell Tommy what time they were coming back, she took the chance to surprise him.
He didn’t know, but she had been watching him in the baby monitor app on her phone. As a matter of fact her heart felt full last night when she realized her baby wouldn’t settle and after a couple of minutes, she saw Tommy getting up from the bed and climbing the crib -big enough to fit him-, to sleep with his baby.
She knew he was the best father their daughter could have.
And another proof was that moment while he was feeding Emma and he started singing a Romani song and ever so gently he explained their baby he came from gypsies and she too, had gypsy blood running in her veins. Y/N wanted to bottle the two of them along with those moments that made her confirm her deep love for that man.
But Y/N was the surprised one when she stepped into her apartment and found Tommy sleeping on the couch with Emma lying on his chest fast asleep, his arm wrapped around her back protectively. Her small hand closed in a tight fist over her bunny’s ear.
The image was instantly tattooed in her heart as a lifetime memory.
And she knew, her heart was full and that this was an endless love.

Every little thing you do- Part 5
Tommy Shelby x reader
Series master list
I changed slightly what I already had written after reading someone’s comment on the previous part 🤭 I always love reading what you think, sometimes it even sparks an idea or two… 🥰

Y/N walked excitedly through the Shelby Company headquarters. She was granted with the permission to open the Shelby Institute, it was incredible how much Tommy’s contacts helped her speed up the process. Now she’d need to interview and recruit teachers, cleaning personnel, a couple of secretaries and enroll the children for the upcoming school year.
But as she got closer, Tommy’s shouting became clearer.
“Don’t fucking try to trick me, Lizzie.” He warned.
Then Y/N flinched when Lizzie raised her voice. “What’s your fucking problem then? If I sleep with Angel, his father or his cousin it’s none of your business!”
“Of course it’s my business!” He exploded. Anger raising at the thought the Changrettas getting sensitive information from his secretary, Lizzie had a big mouth when she wanted to. In more ways than one. “How much is Changretta paying you?”
“So you can choose who I sleep with,” Lizzie spat, “but you are covering Y/N’s pregnancy and treating her as if she was a Shelby!”
She was now able to understand all the secrecy around Tommy’s confident, why suddenly everyone wanted to make sure she was alright, why she was around more frequently. The thought of Y/N fulfilling all the dreams that belonged to her, made Lizzie go mad.
What was happening with the Changretta family? Y/N wondered as she overheard the heated exchange coming from Tommy’s office. The last thing she knew about them was when Danny Whizzbang was falsely killed in front of the Italians. But that was a few years back.
“I know her parents kicked her out.” Y/N heard Lizzie again. “What? You thought I wouldn’t find out? So now you’re pretending to be the perfect little family?”
That’s why Scott disappeared overnight. Lizzie wondered for how long they’ve been fooling everyone.
“Since when do I have to give you explanations, ey? You’re not answering me! What have you told Angel about us?” His hands shook her shoulders abruptly.
“Oh please! Don’t give yourself that much importance, the last thing we do is talk about you. And you don’t have the right to question my decisions, when you’re supporting Y/N and her bastard.”
That last statement was enough for Y/N to feel her blood boiling.
“Repeat that in my face. I dare you.” She opened the door with such force that it slammed against the wall behind. Lizzie paled.
Tommy recognized that look, he barely had time to react and intercepted Y/N midway.
“Y/N calm down.”
“Don’t tell me to calm down!” Y/N shouted, if it wasn’t for Tommy she would’ve already slapped Lizzie. “I’m tired of this, everybody thinks they can call my child bastard just because I’m not married.” She had to bite her tongue to stop her from telling a truth or two to Lizzie. She rarely got angry but once she did, there was no going back.
“Lizzie get out, I don’t want to see you.” Tommy barked as he tried to help Y/N to sit down. Then he realized they had an audience outside his office. “What are y’all doing there?! Go back to work!”
Once he had her settled on the couch, he offered Y/N a glass of water.
“Don’t let her words sink in. It’s bullshit.” He tried, but Y/N was still altered.
“She from all of the people, dares to point her finger at me.” Y/N said sarcastically and rolled her eyes. “And just because I thought Scott was-” she trailed off.
“You’re much better without him, you know that right?” Tommy crouched down, to be at her level.
“Will this ever stop?” Y/N’s voice cracked by the end, emotions at its highest.
“I’ll shoot anyone who dares to say anything like that again.”
His hands tried to calm her trembling fingers. His words managed to earn a small smirk from her, Tommy’s words managed to make her feel better momentarily. But she couldn’t help but wonder for how long she’d be able to deal with comments like that. She’s need to create a shell around her, a thick skin as Ada had told her. Give zero fucks about others people’s opinions.
“It’s like I’ll have it tattooed in my forehead for the rest of my life.”
“What the hell happened?” John demanded to know.
“Get some men to follow Lizzie, she’s been seeing Angel Changretta and we don’t know what kind of information she’s been giving them.”
“Ah the brat!” John made an annoyance face and stormed off.
To try to calm the anger raising, Tommy poured himself a glass of whiskey, not wanting to snap at Y/N for the previous altercation with Lizzie.
The Italians had always give him and his people a bad blood, they thought they were better than anyone else. And in the long run, a relationship between his secretary and one of the Changrettas would bring him more problems than good. Lizzie knew way too much about the business, he couldn’t just fire her.
He needed to find a loose end, something to stop them, to show his power over the Italians. He needed a plan…
Love and sex are a dangerous thing, people get blinded by it and he could’ve a snitch under his nose, he needed to be more cautions with the people he hired and make it clear the unwritten rules and conditions to work for him.
“I should’ve told you sooner.” Y/N mumbled, feeling guilty.
“You knew?” The frown on his brow intensified.
“Not exactly, but one day she started making weird comments about a date and her love life and oh this incredible man…” Y/N shook her face. “I thought she was just bluffing.”
“Yeah you should’ve. But it doesn’t matter now…” he trailed off going for a glass of whiskey, it was still early but he felt like a lion in a cage.
Y/N noticed the way his mind was working, already anticipating to endless possible scenarios and outcomes. Then he paused to rest his arms against a chair and let his head hang loose. The straps of the holster tightened around his shoulders and back, his muscles flexed under the shirt.
“Are you jealous?”
Tommy’s head snapped at Y/N’s words. Taking him by surprise.
“As if you didn’t knew me, you from all of them.” Tommy scoffed, but his eyes softened. “Really? You think I’d be jealous for Lizzie?”
Y/N blushed embarrassed for asking something so intimate. It wasn’t her business.
“Forget I said anything.” She looked in the opposite direction.
“Look at me.” Tommy pleaded with a deep voice. “Lizzie… is not the type of woman that would make a man jealous.” How could he say it nicely? Lizzie was a whore, he didn’t judge her though… But he tried to be cautious with his words.
It took Y/N a moment to register what Tommy meant. But she got the hint wrong. “I get it… just like me, right?”
Mortified, Tommy placed his hands on her shoulders. “No, no that’s not what I was trying to say.” The last thing he wanted to was to hurt her.
“Sure.”
“Y/N…” Tommy whispered, using his forefinger to tilt her head up. “You’re different.”
“The only difference is that she gets paid.” Y/N shuddered, accepting her new reality.
“That’s not true and you know it.” He was too close for her to smell his aftershave and cologne.
His thumb caressing softly her chin.
Shaking her head, she took a step back, but the bold movement made her feel dizzy, her head started spinning.
“What is it?” He asked with worry. “Are you alright?”
Y/N let him guide her to the closest chair. “Yes, it’s just this dizziness, it will go away in a minute.”
But despite Y/N’s efforts to calm him down, Tommy got worrier by the minute.
“Do you need anything?” He eyed Y/N, trying to read her expressions.
“No, thanks.”
“Y/N tell me what I can do for you.” Tommy kneeled before her.
The way he showed her that he genuinely cared about her, melted her heart. Having Tommy’s support meant to her more than words could express.
“I swear I’m fine.”
“Are you feeling poorly?” Polly stepped into Tommy’s office.
“She got dizzy.” He answered for Y/N, looking at his aunt.
“I’ll make you some tea.” She announced before giving Y/N a gentle squeeze on her arm. “Keep her with her head up until it pases, then bring her to the house, I need to speak to you.”
Polly’s look didn’t go unnoticed by Tommy.
He knew those eyes and something was happening, and judging by the look in them it had to be serious.
“I just came to tell you that you can set now the date to open the Institution as soon as we get the personnel.” Y/N announced with her eyes still closed.
“That’s the best news I’ve heard today.” The smile he gave her, was inevitable. “Can I help you with anything?”
“I don’t think you want to go through the interviews and stuff.” Y/N raised her eyebrows at him.
“No.” Tommy answered bluntly.
“That’s what I thought.” She gave him a smile that made him notice something else in her features, something that she didn’t have before, or at least he haven’t noticed… until now.
“Okay so you can sign those papers for me so I can go and sort this out?”
Tommy took the folder and placed his signature on the papers without even reading it. “You’re not taking off my money right?” He joked, the light mood in his voice mirrored in his eyes.
“Absolutely how do you think I’ll feed this baby?” She kept the joke going, feeling a bit better.
“Let me know how this goes.” He saw Y/N take her belongings and the papers. “Y/N how about a party to raise funds for the project? The school needs funding.”
Y/N ran her hand on the door thinking about it.
“A… fancy party?”
Tommy nodded. “With waiters and champagne and shit.” He had access now to the elite members club, people with enough money in their accounts to end poverty but selfish enough to not give away a single coin.
“Could you organize it?” He asked hiding his hands in his pockets.
“Yes, I can do that.” Excitement made her skin tingle, she had never been to a party like that, only once when Lady Winchester requested her to be by her side, but her place was to be back in the shadows, not as a guest.
“You’ll need a dress then. And some fancy shoes too.”
A dress! He had said a dress! She couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of it, she, a no body getting all dressed up to attend a rich people gathering while several weeks pregnant.
“You must not spare on anything, alright? I’ll give you a blank check so you can arrange all of it.” He explained proudly. His dreams finally materializing.
Y/N took in his success, all of the things he ever wanted, he never stopped, never complained. No, instead he focused on finding a way to do all that would take him to where he wanted to be.
His hard work and intelligence was admirable. He never relied on excuses. And despite what everyone might think of his imposing presence, he had a heart of gold and a genuine interest to help.
“Tommy?” Her soft voice pulled him out of his daydream. His blue eyes fixed on hers. “I’m so proud of you.”
She didn’t know how much her words meant to him. How he’d treasure and savor their taste… Y/N was the only person that saw him crying over his mother’s grave, she had been the one who helped him to be a part of the man he used to be when he got back from France, she heard him talk for hours of the horrors he had seen. And now she was helping him materialize his dreams, but in a very subtle way because she wasn’t impressed or interested in the luxury he could afford, she didn’t assume he’d give her everything, no, she wanted to work hard by herself to earn it. She wasn’t accepting anything more than what she thought was fair.
In a world where he could easily get confused and loose sight of what really matters, she was keeping him grounded.
Tumblr media
“Do you want to have dinner in your office?” Y/N asked Tommy as she found him in the hall.
After looking at his clock, he guarded it safely again in his pocket, trying to keep his nerves at bay, he had a secret meeting with Churchill in a desert road, he wanted to share some more instructions about the upcoming deal with the Russians and not having total control over when and how things would happen was driving Tommy mad. This was a very delicate matter and the slightest mistake could get them all murdered in a heartbeat.
“No, actually I’ve to go.”
Touching her arm and giving her a gentle squeeze, Tommy asked her to be safe before walking outside. His vehicle roared as he exited the property and Y/N found herself eating alone in the huge dining table.
For her own safety it was better if Y/N didn’t get involved in this. Russians simply didn’t care about anyone, they were fucking mad. He had been actually considering asking Y/N to go somewhere else safe, but knowing her the way he did, she’d take it badly, as if he was trying to get rid of her.
Y/N glanced at the window, it was dark. But she knew it wasn’t her place to ask anything else. Where could he go at this time of the night? With who?
As much as her bond was so close to Tommy, she needed to realize they weren’t stitched or glued to each other and Tommy generally was extremely reserved about his private affairs.
Being alone made Y/N feel miserable and sad, her whole days were filled with lots of people at the Shelby Company Ltd, or the tea time with her grandma at the Garrison or the moments she shared with Tommy once they arrived at Arrow House. So now being by herself it felt so different…so lonely.
“Mary could you please prepare a tea for me?” Y/N asked politely after finishing her dinner.
“I only serve Mr. Shelby ma’am.” The maid added before walking away.
In a few words, she made very clear that Y/N’s presence wasn’t as welcomed as she thought. And her loyalty was reserved for her master, not his unwelcome guest. So without another word, Y/N picked up her dirty dishes and brought it downstairs.
“Miss Y/LN what are you doing?” Asked one of the maids as the chef wiped his hands with his apron.
“I’m going to wash these.” Y/N stated firmly, voice close to break after the humiliating moment she went through with Mary.
If things were as they should be, Y/N would be working under Mary’s supervision.
“Absolutely not, let me handle this.” Gently, the maid retrieved the items and gave the pregnant woman a look. “Can I help you with anything else? Some desert?”
Y/N shook her head. “No, thanks. Where’s the kettle?” She asked instead. This place was huge and there was a walk-in pantry and everything was organized meticulously.
“This is because of Mary right?” Y/N fixed her eyes on the young girl. “What did she do?” But then she placed her hand on her lips, as if trying to say she messed up. “Apologies I shouldn’t have.”
“No, it’s fine… it’s not like I’m Mrs. Shelby.” She sighed and twisted nervously the bow at the front of her blouse. “She reminded me of my place in this house, that’s all.”
The young maid exploded. “She thinks she’s better than the rest of us, just because she’s in charge of everything.”
Y/N studied her features, noticing her reaction was genuine.
“She’s always criticizing the way I do my job, it’s never good enough. And Mr. Shelby doesn’t even care…”
“I know this isn’t my business.” The chef caught her attention. “But she had been complaining about you to every member of the staff, she doesn’t understands why she has to attend you and do things for you when you’re not married to Mr. Shelby.” Duncan explained as he cleaned the stove.
“Oh I’ve heard her plenty of times too, you should talk to Mr. Shelby.” The kind maid suggested.
But Y/N shook her head and thanked the woman for preparing a tea for her. “No, I’m not here to cause Tommy more trouble. And he needs Mary to take care of everything.”
All of this was because Mary had very inflexible thoughts about premarital sex, she was always murmuring “this offends the Lord… or Lord forgive them for that.” So with Y/N being pregnant and living with a man without being married, this was a sin. Y/N was a sinner and in her eyes, she didn’t deserve even a bloody cup of tea.
“Thanks for the tea and the company. I’m sure Tommy wouldn’t mind if you got to have some rest early, all the chores pending can be done in the morning.” Y/N gave them both a smile and rushed upstairs to her bedroom.
The place was huge and she made sure to lock her door, a constant fear of some intruder breaking into the mansion made her feel uneasy. Tommy had a bunch of enemies after all, they wouldn’t care about harming her or her baby just to get to Tommy.
It was too late now to regret anything, it wouldn’t change the course of things. But sitting on the ottoman by the window, she let her mind wander to think of her baby, to imagine if would it be a girl or a boy?
She wondered how would it feel the kicks and her baby would like to hear her singing a lullaby to sleep. Polly already warned her that she’d buy a stroller and a crib for when the baby is born and her grandmother was already knitting some shoes and a blanket. Esme promised to give her a box full of clothes of all sizes so she could choose what to keep, each gesture kept touching her heart, to realize how generous they all were to her, never making her feel bad or unwelcome. She would make sure to let her baby know of all the love that surrounded them even before the birth.
Y/N knew that sometimes blood means nothing sadly, but life always brings a good group of people to replace the others.
But thankfully her baby would’ve lots of arms to cuddle on and a loving chosen family to rely on.

Thank you for sharing!! @polishcrazyone 🥰✨
Hola, Mar! ❤️❤️.
I'm here to sending you a request. Tommy telling his kids (it can be both of them, or just Charlie or just Ruby) a story about his mother. We know he didn't have good memories about her especially because what happened, but maybe, he remembered something maybe a bedtime story (or a recipe, music, etc) and he tells them about her. The kids didn't know her, but after that moment maybe they can imagine how their grandma was ❤️.
My dear Flor @justrainandcoffee thank you so much for sending this request!!!! I knew I had to make it extra special since it’s part of my Grandma’s series 👵🏻♥️✨ so I didn’t want to rush it. This made me go back in time to our endless sleepovers, it made me think of her. I hope you enjoy this 💕
Special thanks to @blondie-22 for creating the BEAUTIFUL moodboard, like always you capture the exact essence of the story 🥰
Edit: A/N part of this story is inspired by a song called Toy Soldier by Martika

The bedroom door cracked louder than Tommy expected, he cursed himself internally because it was late and the house was quiet, the last thing he needed was to wake up his wife.
But she was already up and leaned against the window, the shadow of her frame only visible under the moonlight. Frowning, he stopped taking off his suit jacket midway when he noticed something was under the blankets of his bed.
“Why are you up?” He whispered.
“Charlie’s having trouble with bedtime.” She replied back. “He thinks there’s a monster under his bed.” She then added but also gave him a warning look so he better wouldn’t laugh it off.
“There’s no such thing.”
“They wanted to sleep here for reassurance.” Y/N placed her hands on his chest to lean in for a quick kiss. “He was so scared last night.”
“Daddy?” Ruby’s small voice broke the silence of the room.
Charlie stirred and his eyes fluttered open.
“Go back to sleep.” Tommy urged them.
“There’s a monster under my bed, I heard noises.” Charlie assured him.
Sitting next to his son, Tommy caressed his blonde hair in a loving way.
“I can assure you there’s no monster under your bed, son.” Tommy explained in a calmed tone.
“But I heard…”
Tommy shook his head gently, knowing it was a good time to share a fond memory that suddenly hit him hard. After being pushed back to the farthest place of his mind for years…
“You’ve nothing to worry about,” Tommy assured his boy, then turning to face Y/N he invited her over the bed, “you want to hear what really is?”
“I do Daddy.” Ruby replied while Charlie nodded.
“It’s the toy soldier.” Tommy assured his kids. Then clearing his throat he continued. “All toys come up to life around three in the morning, when the house is quiet and you and your sister are sleeping, they start playing by themselves. But when you wake up, they stop because you must not see them.”
His voice and the fabulous tale he was narrating had both his children and Y/N captivated.
“But how do you know?” Charlie asked trying to understand.
Tommy raised his eyebrows, taking his time to explain it properly.
“Well, that’s ‘cause when I was about your age, I heard noises in my room too.”
Y/N noticed the emotions shining in his eyes and his voice.
“And you had toys like mine?” Charlie asked but Tommy shook his head.
“No, I had a horse made of wood, uncle Charlie made it for me.”
Ruby was in awe. “Like a real horse?”
“Yes but a small one, I carried it everywhere.” He relaxed against the pillows, Y/N knew his childhood wasn’t easy, he was forced to mature earlier than other kids.
“So one night I was terrified and went to sleep with my Mum and she told me it was my toys playing.”
“And she told you how did she know?”
“No, she didn’t.”
And both kids went on to ask a million more questions about their grandma, a loving figure they never got the chance to meet. To Tommy this meant much more than he could put into words, he went on to describe her features, mannerisms and and few secrets, so his kids could feel her close to them in some way.
He didn’t know, but through them and their curiosity, he was healing a part of his broken heart by remembering the good moments, her legacy.
Y/N could see the way their imagination was running wild trying to put a face for such mysterious woman, trying to think of what was like to be on road forever stuck in a caravan as they said, asking how she could ride bareback a horse without falling.
Tommy rarely talked about his mother, it had always been something that was buried deep inside his heart, a very sensitive topic, Y/N knew how much it had hurt him to lose her at such young age. Not having her when he needed her the most definitely left a permanent scar in his heart. Y/N wondered how different would Tommy be under another circumstances.
And by the way he described his mother, Y/N realized he looked so much like her instead of his father, which given the circumstances, was a blessing. Although, thanks to Polly who took the role as a mother figure for the Shelby siblings, they had managed much better than if Arthur Sr. was in charge.
“Why can’t we play with them?” Asked Ruby with a deep frown.
“Because after playing with you all day, they get to work by playing, the soldier gotta watch out the fort right?” He stared at Charlie. “And your doll has to drink some more tea, ey.”
Then, a gentle smile played on his lips.
“So you gotta go to sleep to let them play, so they can enjoy their own time.”
“That’s why I heard noises.” Charlie seemed to think about it for a second.
“Yeah.” Tommy winked at them.
“But my teddy stays with me all night.” Ruby stated.
“Hmm he’s gotta take care of you.”
“Can we stay here? So they can play?” Charlie’s eyes sparkled.
Y/N nodded feeling touched by the way Tommy managed to help Charlie leave his fears behind. Loving the way his innocent mind was processing everything.
“Of course, now just let’s all squeeze in together.”Tommy proposed. Feeling Y/N’s hand touching his hand, he looked up at her.
Soon both kids were fast asleep. The story about their toys playing and making noises was the explanation they needed to hear, to feel Tommy’s reassurance.
Y/N observed her husband taking off his clothes, hiding the gun in a drawer and coming back to bed. Thinking how of course not everything is as it should be, and the kids would realize of the truth one day…but she was more than happy to enjoy that little moment in their own little bubble while it lasted.
“That was beautiful.”
He nodded in agreement. He rarely allowed himself to have moments like these, but he felt the need to open his heart with his own happy memory with his mother, gone too soon. She had missed a lot of important events in his life that he was determined to try to be there for his children.
And at least, he could honor her memory by sharing some stories like the one where the toys start playing after midnight.
Turning off the lights of their bedside tables, Tommy drifted to sleep right away and saw the image of his mother wrapping her arms around a you her version of himself protectively, answering all the questions he had about how could his horse toy not move during the day, or how would drink water if the river was so far away… and he saw her in his dreams smiling adoringly at him before kissing the top of his head.

My my 🔥🔥🔥 that call definitely left him wanting for more 😩
Ugh he’s so deep for her, him? Thomas Shelby asking for a proper date and flowers and details? Just admit it already 🤭
F*ck Buddies
Part 4 ( more here)
Pairing -Modern Thomas Shelby and Reader
Warnings- 18*, swearing, violence, sexual content
Tumblr media
Tommy dropped you at home, after your date. Just like he promised he would. You didn't invite him in, he got that. He had asked you to do this properly. You had already fucked, so he would take you out again. Treat you right, shower you with gifts.... flowers.
Fucking anything you wanted. He just wanted you, he knew that now for a fact. Rolling over again in bed, he was restless. A text wouldn't hurt would it? He wouldn't look to eager.
"Still thinking about your hot pink panties, may have to go and have a cold shower, xoxo"
Still awake, you giggled to yourself, it was harmless flirting. Trying to get each other wound up. You had wanted to ask him in, wanted him to fuck you, make you grip the sheets. As you screamed profanities. But you were playing the game now, just like he was.
"Oh really?" you replied, "Was it these ones?"
Tumblr media
It wasn't the first time, you had sent each other sexy pictures. You had took this one before you went out. Knowing just how to tease him. Tommy's breath hitched, as he palmed his growing erection over his underwear.
"Fuck... you've done it now. Need to bury my face, in between those thighs,"
Feeling your nipples harden, you typed back. "Hmm that would make me so wet, you tasting my pussy. You always know just how to please me..."
"Yeah.. she fucking wants it," he exhaled, now pumping himself in his hand.
"I could put that pretty mouth of yours, to good use," Tommy replied, sending it as a voice note.
You could hear he was panting, clearly getting himself off. Feeling brave you Face Timed him, hoping to god he was alone. Smirking, he instantly answered.
“I was worried about you, you sounded out of breath," you cooed, now wearing only your panties. "Look, still have them on," Skimming over your breasts, you pointed the camera at your panties.
"Yeah, fuck... take them off, good girl, show me," he exhaled deeply. "Or come over here, so I can fuck you?"
Putting the camera back onto your face, you slid your panties down.
“I am tucked up in bed, all alone. Show me Tommy, show me what I am missing," you ordered. Watching him flip the camera around, while stroking up and down his shaft. His pre-cum glistening against his bedside lamp.
"Look what you do to me, ey?" he growled, "Your turn," Fuck... he felt like he could explode already.
Holding the phone with your left hand, you stroked your hand over your body. "Hmm Tommy, touch me," you panted, all inhibitions gone. You were confident with your sexuality, Tommy made your feel confident.
Arching your back, you slipped your middle finger between your bare folds. "Ah, this is you Tommy. Your big....hard...cock, slipping, ahhh," you paused, wanting to delay. "Stretching me... open,"
"Yeah it's me, keep fucking going. I'm touching that wet pussy, she's begging for it," he answered, trying not to cum yet.
"There... just slipping inside," your middle finger disappeared, while you moaned at the welcome intrusion. "So tight for you, Tommy,"
He was about to explode, all over his clean sheets. But, he didn't care you had him where you wanted him. He would give anything, to be in your warm pussy now.
Oh god... he was...he was going to cum.
"Urgh... shit," he groaned, out of breath. Sweat on his forehead.
"Let me see," you grinned, as he turned the camera for you to watch his creamy seed leaking out. Dripping onto his hand.
"Hmm, could have licked that clean for you. Goodnight Tommy," And with that you hung up, leaving him wanting more.
The next day, you were on your break at work. Trying to plan out your next training session. Tommy had text you three times today, very unusual. Sometimes you wouldn't hear from me, from one week to the next.
"Tomorrow night? Would you agree to see me again? I can cook? xo,"
Smiling, you typed back. "I am out tomorrow, it is my friend's birthday. You know how important my friends are to me x," grinning you sent it. He would have to wait. Be patient.
"Ha bloody, ha," Tommy said out loud, as he typed back.
“Of course, let me know when you are free? Xo,”
Don’t reply yet, make him wait. Men like Tommy, had women running after them. No that wasn’t you, you were independent. You didn’t answer to anyone, never had. Carrying on with your day, you walked back down the gym stairs. Heading for the changing room.
Pulling off your vest, you stood in your sports bra and high waisted leggings. Stepping back to get your hoodie, you bumped into someone. Instantly recognising their smell. Feeling their hand run across your torso, over your breasts to your throat. Gripping lightly, applying pressure.
“Hello Y/n,” Tommy spoke, subtly sniffing your hair.
“Tommy, what a surprise,” you whispered, tilting your head back to look at him. Piercing blue eyes, finding yours. “This is the ladies changing room,”
“Oh, I know that love,” he winked, pushing his groin against you. Hmmm, what you could do with that. Spinning you around, he picked you up. Passionately kissing you, walking you backwards into a changing room. Kicking the door closed.
“You like living on the edge, Tommy?” You breathed, while being held against the wall.
“Fuck yes,” he smiled, kneading your ass with his hands. Before placing you onto the floor, “You scared of getting caught, ey?” His hot breath was on your neck, your walls fluttering at his deep rumbling voice.
“No,” you answered honestly. Slipping his manly hand into your leggings, it ventured into your panties. You let your legs fall open, to give him access.
“Just as I remember…. Smooth,” Kissing behind your ear, he spread your legs. Thumb rolling across your clit, already swollen.
Fuck ….you were so turned on already.
“This pussy is … mine now,” he whispered. “I want you to be mine,”
Hooking his finger deep inside, he bumped your g-spot. You couldn’t concentrate on what he was saying. Also, aware of someone in the changing room.
Burying your head on his chest, you panted heavily. His thumb rolling against your clit again. The nerves igniting.
Trying to keep quiet.
Tommy picking up his pace, finger deeper and deeper inside. “Make a mess on me,” Pulling your bra down, he nibbled at your left nipple. Thumb brushing your clit, his finger still arching hitting your g spot.
Your walls beginning to contract around his finger. Pulsating ….
Beating against him… over and over.
Until….
Until…. Yes ….
There it was….
You came undone, biting hard on your own lip.
Feeling your juices dripping, from your wet pussy.
Dripping onto his hand, as he stood grinning at you.
Satisfied, he had made you cum so quickly.
“That you, Y/n?” A voice called, it was your colleague Sara. Putting your finger on Tommy’s lips, you glared at him. His hand still inside of your panties.
“Yeah just… changing,” you somehow managed to answer. Trying to calm your breathing.
“Ok, see you tomorrow,” she called, as you heard the door slam.
Removing his hand, he ran his fingers across your bottom lip. Before putting them in his own mouth, and sucking.
“Call me,” he stated, like nothing happened. As he left the changing room, your legs still shaking……

Lee! Hope you're doing well 💋 so I so your prompt for the requests and if you're feeling inspired with this what about?
- ❛ I’ve killed for you. Who else can say that? ❜

The Debt
Warning: Dark!Tommy 💀, mention of gun, blood, murder, trauma
You bit your hand to keep from screaming as the man in the long, black overcoat pushed you inside your small bedsit. The door slammed behind you as you stumbled toward the window, pushing the lace curtains aside with trembling fingertips. The remnants of blood were still there on the cobblestones beside the alley, though it was quickly being washed away in the driving rain.
Your memories of the violence carried out in your name would not be erased so easily. The bile rose in your throat as you thought of each shot striking its target, blood gushing over the pavement and splattering onto your shoes. You looked down to see the evidence of the stains that had ruined your new boots, an odd sensation washing over you as though you were staring at someone else's feet rather than your own.
"Come away from the window, love," a low voice rumbled across the room like thunder.
Your body shuddered involuntarily at the noise, a hand gripping the window ledge to keep upright. Feet uncooperative as your mind, you attempted to reply, but found yourself unable to dislodge the words from your brain. You shook your head fiercely, but the cotton headed feeling wouldn't budge.
The man scoffed at your disobedience, removing his coat to wrap around your shoulders protectively. He clamped a large hand over your shoulder, guiding you toward the little table in the corner. As he handed over a flask, he instructed, "Sit down and have some of this. It'll steady your nerves."
Suddenly you heard yourself stutter, "I...d-d-don't drink."
"Alright, tea then," he conceded. "Where do you keep it?" He leaned over you, eyebrow raised in question until your finger pointed in the direction of a far cupboard.
As he turned away, his gun came into view and your heart began to hammer at your ribcage until you thought you might faint. Pressing your fingers to your temples, you closed your eyes and attempted deep breaths. Eventually you pushed them out in labored waves, though your body was quickly wracked by sobs.
"Hey, hey...there's no need for tears," you heard the deep voice begin to soothe as you felt a warm cup being pressed into your palms.
Looking up through watery eyes, you sniffed, "Who are you? What do you want?"
Taking a seat opposite you, the man's crystalline blue eyes locked onto yours intently as he introduced himself as Tommy Shelby. "You don't know who I am?"
"No," you admitted. "I've only just arrived this week."
Tommy rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "That's what I thought. You'd never have taken that short cut if you'd known the sorts of bastards lurking."
A draft blowing through the crack in the windowsill crept across the back of your neck at that moment, triggering a phantom feeling of icy fingers upon your throat and you startled losing your grip on the china.
Tommy caught the cup before it landed on the floor, hissing as the hot liquid scalded his hands.
"I'm sorry, I felt his hands..." you mumbled, fingers tracing the delicate skin where the man from the alley had grabbed you.
"You've had a shock," Tommy stated, cleaning himself off with a rag. "But you needn't worry any longer. You're under my protection now." He stood with a determined nod, gathering his cap and placing it on his head.
For the first time that evening your shoulders relaxed and you breathed a sigh of relief. With a bit of effort, you banished the terrifying images of what you'd seen and tried to find good in the intimidating man before you. You even began convincing yourself it was fate that brought him to look after you in your new city.
However, as you stood to remove Mr. Shelby's coat, he casually announced, “You can bring it tomorrow when you see me about repaying your debt.” Then he proffered a business card.
You stared up at his chiseled face, partially covered in shadow. Unable to tell if he were serious. "I don't understand,” you admitted with a puzzled look.
Clicking his tongue disapprovingly, he pulled on a pair of black leather gloves. “So forgetful all of a sudden, aren't we," he scolded.
Your throat went dry, constricting painfully when you tried to swallow. "What do you mean?"
The leather cracked menacingly as he reached out to caress the apple of your cheek with the back of his hand. "I've killed for you. Who else can say that?" he reminded you in a voice far too flat and calm to offer affection.
Your eyes went wide as you searched his darkening pupils, panic shooting down your spine as you thought of what awaited you at the address printed on the card. The bit of paper shook violently in your hand as his thumb grazed your lips, leaving a powerful promise in his wake. "I've done something for you, now it's your turn."
When you bristled beneath his touch, he leaned toward your ear, a hiss escaping on his whisky scented breath. "I could return you to that alley if you like, but I think you'll find this arrangement far better." He turned without giving you a chance to protest. There was no need for once you owed a debt to Tommy Shelby, he owned you for life.

Oh these two 🥰 *smooch* I adore them and their endless teasing! - they would’ve had the time of their life together.
I can’t stop thinking about that thought crossed Cillian’s mind while Enda was on the phone with Mrs M. 🤔 -maybe it’s just me.
But oh well onto a difficult matter, he’ll need a good dose of good luck for that call with his ex wife…
Tumblr media
Happy ‘SAG award winner Cillian Murphy’ Sunday to all who celebrate! Another quick note for readers unfamiliar with the Lockdown lore - Mrs M works as an editor in a publishing house. I think that’s all you need to know! Enjoy!
Summary: Another day, another location for our exhausted actor hero. Today it’s the Berlinale opening day and Cillian is away showing off Small Things Like These. Later, he and Mrs M (back in London) catch up.
Warnings: None I think? Just these two being silly idiots. Enda makes an appearance. Not a warning unless you have an irrational fear of Enda Walsh. Also I apologise to Enda cos I might have written him wildly ooc 🙈 I don’t know him well enough to be sure!

iv. Thursday 15 February
She was almost cross-eyed staring at her computer screen - second edits were always harder, the constant vigilance in trying to not be a total dickhead and contradict her own previous suggestions - when the phone rang. Still reading her screen she fumbled for the device, answering briskly and without looking.
“Hello?”
“Aren’t you supposed to say, ‘good evening, this is Y/N Y/L/N’..?” chuckled a familiar voice, putting on an affectation of her professional telephone manner.
“Aren’t you supposed to be off being bothered by reporters and having your photo taken for your thirsty internet fans?” she countered, grinning, sitting back in her chair and throwing her glasses on the desk so she could rub her tired eyes.
“Have done a lot of that already. May their thirst be quenched. And if not, we’re leaving in a bit to take more.”
She chuckled huskily and he swallowed at the sound, very much wishing he was at home. “Oh you sweet naive man, they will never be satisfied. They shall remain perpetually thirsty. A fact I believe you are well aware of after your GQ performance this week.”
He sighed, though a tiny ember of pride warmed his chest. “Am I ever going to live that one down?”
“On the internet? No need, they adore you. In this family? Jury’s still out. Eoin wants a word next time he sees you.”
“He’s already sent me many choice words,” he grumbled. “You don’t happen to know what he means by ‘sex offender shoes’ do you..?”
She giggled. “Maybe.”
“I fucking knew it! I knew he hadn’t come up with that one on his own! What’s the matter with the shoes??”
She waved a hand. “Literally everything.” He laughed and she resettled in her chair, tucking one leg under herself. “But enough about you whoring it up in Barry Keogan’s cast offs..”
He spluttered in the background and she pressed on.
“How did it go? Tell me everything. Are you the darling of the Berlinale once more? I mean, they’d be mad not to love it.”
There was a quiet shuffling down the phone and she could feel his blush all the way from Germany.
“They seemed to love it. Like really love it. Some bloke even said he liked it better than Oppenheimer.”
She squealed so joyously in his ear that he had to pull the phone away to prevent permanent damage.
“I knew they would! That’s so fantastic, baby! I’m so fucking proud of you all, you deserve it.”
He muttered an embarrassed thanks, taking a swig of the bottle of beer Enda had given him after they got back to the hotel. Dutch - or, more accurately, German - courage for the gala evening and red carpet ahead.
“So, what’s the plan for tonight?”
“Oh, you know, shots, strip clubs, prostitutes.”
“Classic.”
He sighed a little. “We’ve got to go to this opening night dinner thing. But I think I’m going to try and get an early night.”
She snorted. “Sure sure. You, Enda and Eileen together on a work sponsored trip? I’ll believe this early night malarkey when I see it.”
He laughed, sinking the final third of the small bottle. “Yeah well, maybe not so early. Flight home isn’t until three tomorrow afternoon.”
“Just try not to get arrested. Or let Matt get arrested. You know how he is.”
“You and Emily aren’t here so he should be safe enough.”
“Oi! Nobody got arrested - it was just a misunderstanding,” she huffed, sitting up straighter in her office chair and pressing the phone against her ear with her shoulder as she fumbled to put on her glasses again. All the better to not be able to see him with. “Besides, it was Matt’s fault anyway,” she added sulkily.
“I can see your pout from here,” he grinned and she stuck out her tongue. “And put that tongue away.”
Fuck he really knew her too well.
“That’s not what you were saying last night,” she giggled.
“Behave you mucky girl,” he chastised with zero real intent, delicious memories of her with her lips wrapped around him floating across his vision. They’d barely made it back into the flat from the BFI dinner before she was on her knees.
“Make me,” she grinned.
Running his tongue quickly over his lips, he instinctively looked around the empty hotel suite as if someone might overhear. It was so rare to be in a hotel without a small entourage these days. But before he could speak there was knocking on his door. He heard her sigh slightly down the line.
“Duty calls..?”
“Sorry baby, I promised them I wouldn’t be late for once.”
“S’ok, have fun. Give everyone my love.”
“I will. They wish you were here too. You know they all like you more than me.” He heard her chuckle.
“Naturally,” she smiled, hearing him open the door in the background, the quiet rumble of Enda’s voice.
“Is that Y/N?”
A scuffling noise crackled in her ear and she winced.
“My darling! How are you? Why aren’t you here and I’ve only got this one to play with?? All he does is whine about his jet lag.”
He grinned at Cillian who gave him the finger and went to put on his suit jacket, grabbing his overcoat.
“Hello lovely, I’m fine. Just drowning in a sea of manuscript corrections.”
Enda sighed heavily, well versed in such things. “Are you making some poor penniless artist’s life a misery and that’s why I’m denied your company??”
She laughed. “Yes. Exactly that. The ceaseless scribble of the ruthless red pen cannot be avoided. And if I was gadding about with you two, then how could I possibly ruin their weekend with my cruel and acerbic criticism of their work?”
“The devil works hard but editors work harder,” he agreed with mock seriousness. “Can I steal him from you now though darling? That lovely girl he employs to tell him where he’s supposed to be every minute of his life says we’re not allowed to be late. And apparently traffic’s a nightmare for reasons I don’t fully understand.”
“Of course. But promise you won’t get him into trouble. No pissing in alleyways.”
“Absolutely no promises, you know what he’s like. Can’t pass a gloomy cut through without needing to mark the territory.”
Cillian sighed heavily, glaring at his best friend, and by extension, his wife. Though it was possibly less effective on her given she couldn’t actually see it. It had been an enormous relief to him that Enda had taken such a shine to Y/N when they first got together, years ago, but it was possible that perhaps they got on a little too well sometimes.
“Alright, that’s enough.” He held out his hand for the phone and with a flurry of giggled goodbyes, Enda handed it back.
“Downstairs in two minutes,” he warned as he left the room.
“Sorry love, I really have to go.”
“It’s fine. Have a great time. I’m only teasing because I’m so jealous - I should have fobbed this one off on Jennie and come with you.”
“Except we both know you couldn’t because his highness would go mad if the reply didn’t come from you.”
She sighed heavily. “Never a truer word. Right, go, have fun, drink all the beer and have a lovely time. I love you.”
He smiled. “I love you, too. See you tomorrow night.”
“Oh, Cill?” she asked just as he was about to hang up. “I’m sure you won’t have had time, but have you talked to Aoife..?”
He blew out a long breath. “No, not yet. Today was too crazy. I’ll ring her tomorrow when it’s less bonkers.”
“Ok, I thought as much, it’s just that Eoin texted about it. He’s a bit anxious.”
“I promise I’ll sort it out, I just need to do this stuff first.”
“No, I know, it’s fine. Just wanted to check.”
“I have to go, baby.”
“Yes, sorry, go. Love you.”
“Love you too.”
He stared for a moment at the device in his hand, chewing his lip. Opening whatsapp he quickly sent a message to his eldest.
Sorry I’ve not spoken to mum yet, today has been really busy. I promise I will soon x
The ticks turned blue but nothing else happened. Sighing, he slipped it into his coat pocket and headed for the lift, mentally preparing for another evening of being gawked at.

Reb! @peakyswritings woah! There’s a lot to take in from this chapter!!! I couldn’t put it down.
Poor Y/N since kids dealing with the rumors that she was a witch? The things she has been through. I really liked the moment with her father, he seems to be around her little finger -and thankfully he didn’t accept that boy’s marriage proposal for her!-, I can’t help but wonder how it will turn out when Tommy makes up his mind…
Maybe it was because they both needed it, or maybe because late nights were made for bringing down walls and sharing secrets that couldn’t see the daylight. Maybe it was because it is only in the deepest darkness that one’s true self can no longer be hidden. -this moment between them, sparkles flew all around!!!!!! I LOVED it
Heart, Body and Soul || Tommy Shelby x OC

PART III
Summary: Tommy makes up his mind about who it his that he’s going to marry. An unwanted encounter rattles Nina, and leaves Tommy with questions.
Warnings: mentions of arranged marriage, slow-burn, small age-gap (Tommy’s 30, Nina is in her early 20s), time-typical misogyny, drinking, smoking, mentions of drugs, mentions of violence, English is not my first language.
A/N: here’s the third chapter! I got a bit carried away with this one, and I hope you’ll like it. Here and there in the series there will be some sentences taken from the show. At the end of the chapter, you’ll find the translation of a few Italian sentences. Feedback is always appreciated☀️

The first few days following Tommy Shelby’s arrival were probably the busiest the Ferrante family had ever lived. Among lunches, dinners, nosy relatives and business meetings, no one had a moment’s rest, not even Tommy himself. The guest had been occupied by countless meetings with Vincenzo and Mario Ferrante, aiming to draw up a plan of action to take down Sabini. However, he had not openly declared his intention to court one of the girls yet, keeping everybody on edge. Nina had a suspicion that he took pleasure in keeping them waiting, enjoying that bit of control. Or maybe it was part of some kind of plan. Whether it was strategy or pure entertainment, it was working.
Sitting at the breakfast table, she tried to capture fragments of the conversation that was going on between Tommy Shelby and her father in the next room, but their voices were too low for her to pick up their words. The rattles of pots and pans caused by her mother surely didn’t help. After an indefinite amount of time, they made their way into the kitchen, apparently ready to go out.
“Nina,” her father addressed her, making her raise her head from her breakfast. “Mr. Shelby is coming with you and your mother to the city.” He announced, gesturing towards the guest. “He has something to do, and he’ll need someone to translate for him.”
Nina had to hold back a snort at her father’s words. She had totally forgotten she had promised her mother she’d go to the city with her to help her with the groceries, and now that she had to be Tommy Shelby’s personal translator, she wanted to go even less. However, she nodded in agreement, knowing all too well there was no point in protesting, especially with her father.
Satisfied by her answer, Vincenzo walked up to her to place a kiss on her head. “Grazie. Ci vediamo dopo, vado a parlare con zio Mario.” (“Thank you. I’ll see you later, I’m going to talk to uncle Mario.”)
Her gaze followed him as he said goodbye to her mother and moved to leave the room, but not before whispering something in the gangster’s hear. Once her husband was gone, Maria Ferrante smiled and gestured towards the table, encouraging Tommy to have breakfast, her lack of English making it impossible for her to formulate a single sentence. He nodded in thanks and sat on a chair, opting for a cup of coffee. Silence fell in the room, only broken by the clattering noise of the utensils. Nina couldn’t help but notice how neat he looked, even in the early hours of the morning, already dressed and freshly shaved, and she suddenly felt somewhat self-conscious about her disheveled hair and house clothes. It wasn’t like she cared about what he thought of her, but showing herself like that made her feel like she was at something of a disadvantage. Off guard, even.
Out of the corner of her eye, she could see her mother glancing at them from time to time, unsuccessfully trying to be subtle as she waited for them to interact in some way. A sigh escaped her lips as she poured herself some coffee, shaking her head at the ridiculousness of the situation.
She was well aware about her mother’s hopes and wishes. The prospect of having an unmarried daughter was terrifying, not only because marriage was a woman’s duty, but also because women didn’t get far in life without a man taking care of them. Moreover, the village was starting to talk. Older women speculated about Nina’s behaviour, about the reasons behind it, about where her fierceness would lead. If word about a possible dishonour spread, the whole family would be ruined. But it was also a matter of pride. If Tommy Shelby chose to marry Nina, it would be a victory against Aunt Rita and her beautiful, perfect daughter.
Just as she was about to get up to go and get ready, a dark shadow whipped past her head from above and landed softly on the ground without a sound. Tommy’s head snapped towards the spot where the shadow had landed, and Nina almost chocked on her coffee, already knowing that all hell would break loose as soon as she saw her black cat standing in the middle of the room. She was quick to put her cup back on the table, but before she could intervene, her mother let out a scream, waving the rag she had in her hand against the animal, a long series of Italian curses leaving her lips. Nina placed her hand in front of her mouth, trying her best not to laugh as the cat stared at the woman with his bright yellow eyes, an imperturbable look on his little face, but as soon as she caught sight of Tommy Shelby’s stunned expression all of her efforts to suppress her laughter failed.
Her mother glared at her, crossing to her to hit the back of her head with the rug. “Fai sparire quella bestia.” She spat out, before turning on her heels and leaving the room.
Winston had a habit of snuggling on tall cabinets, in the dark, where no one could see him, just to jump out at the least suitable times - that is, when Maria Ferrante was there. That cat terrified her, not only because she was scared of cats in general, but especially since he was a black one. When her daughter years prior brought that bad omen inside her house, she even threatened to leave. Sometimes, Nina wondered if the cat was doing it out of spite, somehow sensing that her mother hated him with all her being.
Nina watched as the Winston sat next to the table, starting to lick his paws as if nothing happened, then she glanced at Tommy, who had seemingly recollected himself after that burst of chaos. He stretched his hand out to the cat, which stopped his movements to follow him with his eyes, his little body slightly stiffening.
For a moment, just for a moment, Nina considered staying silent and let him risk his fingers, but her good nature took over. “He’ll scratch you.” She warned him. “He only lets me pet him.”
Tommy withdrew his hand, furrowing his brows. “It didn’t seem like he wanted to scratch.”
That’s the point, she thought to herself as she grabbed her cup again and leaned with her back against the chair. “Don’t trust him. He lets you get close and, when you least expect it, he attacks.” She explained, shifting her eyes in the direction of the cat. “He seems cute, but he’s feral.”
“Reminds me of someone.” He quietly murmured, and if the room hadn’t been so silent she wouldn’t have even heard him. But she did, and she was struck speechless by his statement. His eyes shined with amusement at her baffled face, clearly proud about the fact that he had finally managed to dumbfound her.
Was it a compliment? An insult? Was he just having fun? Nina couldn’t read him, and it only made her more nervous. But she quickly regained her composure, unwilling to give him too much satisfaction. She emptied her cup and put it on the table, clearing her throat. “I’ll get ready, and then we can go.” She changed the subject, getting up from her chair.
Tommy mirrored her action, and before she could leave the kitchen, his voice stopped her. “Do you have whiskey?”
She turned around, shifting her gaze between the clock on the wall and the man in front of her. She opened her mouth to say something, astonished by his peculiar choice of breakfast, but again, words failed her. Deciding that it wasn’t her business, she took a bottle and a glass out of a cabinet and placed them on the table, before walking out of the room.
Tommy Shelby undoubtedly wasn’t an ordinary man.
Tumblr media
Tommy wasn’t so sure that the place where the Ferrante’s personal driver had taken them could be actually called city. There were a few shops, and even a public square with a small church, but it was kind of empty, and it was still within the limits of the village. He figured that “city” was probably their way of referring to the area outside the outskirts, where the whole family lived to keep a low profile while conducting the business in the big cities.
Walking next to Nina, Tommy took advantage of their proximity to take in the details of her face. She had an interesting kind of beauty, her features were sharp, but harmonious as a whole. Her brown irises shone with a golden hue in the sunlight, and were framed by long, thick lashes. She had pulled her long black hair into a braid, exposing her delicate neck. Her tanned skin seemed soft, even velvety, and some irrational part of him wondered how it would feel to brush his fingers against it.
He pushed back the thought, shifting his gaze just in time for her not to notice that he had been observing her. He had to admit that Nina aroused his curiosity, for one reason or another, and he would have sworn that she felt the same way about him. He was not unaware of the glances she stole him from time to time, when she thought he wasn’t looking. She studied him just as much as he studied her.
“What is it that you have to do, Mr Shelby?” Nina’s voice jolted him out of his thoughts, her question reminding him that it wasn’t her the girl he was supposed to keep his attention on.
Tommy sucked in a breath, the words he was about to say felt heavy on this tongue. “I need to buy a gift for your cousin. Today I’ll start courting her.”
Saying it out loud made it even more real. Until that moment, that marriage had felt like something that wouldn’t happen to him, like something he was setting up for someone else. Now Tommy was starting to realise how much his life was going to change, and that thought was almost suffocating.
“It’s about time.” She raised her eyebrows, a hint of mischief in her voice. “Finally we’ll be able to sleep at night.”
“What, you were so scared I’d choose you that you couldn’t sleep?” He squinted his eyes, the ghost of a smirk playing on his face.
“Yes, I was terrified.” She nodded, taking on a fake serious tone.
He was about to retort, when Maria Ferrante called her daughter from behind, making them stop in their tracks. Too caught up in their bickering, they hadn’t noticed that Nina’s mother had fallen far behind. A guy Tommy had never seen before was now walking next to her, amiably allowing her to lean on his arm.
“Nina, guarda chi c’è.” She slightly raised her voice, motioning her to get closer.
Tommy watched in confusion as Nina’s expression changed, the slight clenching of her jaw hardening her features, her whole body tensing. She didn’t obey to her mother’s request, choosing to wait for them to approach her instead. She kept her gaze fixated on the young man, staying silent even when he came close to them, Maria still on his arm with a big smile on her face. She told them something in Italian, sending a meaningful glance to her daughter, before leaving the three of them alone to walk into a shop.
Tension filled the air as Nina glared at him, visibly annoyed by the grin on his face. An unmistakable glint of malice sparkled in his dark eyes, mixed with an emotion that Tommy couldn’t quite recognise. And it seemed that the more she scowled, the more his grin widened. Tommy was already familiar with the hostility Nina was capable of, but the look in her eyes was nothing like the one she had given him the day they had met, or the ones she reserved him when he said something she didn’t like. It wasn’t simple distrust, or suspiciousness. No, it was much more than that. It was personal. She seemed repelled by his presence.
And Nina was repelled. Because she knew that behind the pleasant face, the charm and the good manners, Stefano Spinietta was a disgusting person. He was the son of one of her father’s business partners, the boss of another mafia family, which operated both in Sicily and in New York. In the last few years, Stefano had been very clear about his intentions towards Nina, and he had taken too many liberties with her, to the point where she had found herself in the position of putting a knife to his throat. But the threat didn’t have the intended effect; if anything, it only made him more relentless.
Stefano looked at Tommy as if he had just noticed his presence, before turning to her again. “Non mi presenti?” He asked, leaning towards her.
“Non parla italiano. Vattene.” She said shortly, eager to put an end to that encounter.
“Ah.” He said, as if he had finally understood something. “È il gangster.”
Nina was about to speak, but the words died in her throat. She didn’t want to fuel the conversation, and there was nothing she could say that would convince him to just leave. And Tommy’s piercing gaze kept her from being too obvious about how upset she actually was. Stefano wasn’t doing anything improper, after all, and she didn’t want to make a scene for nothing.
The sound of a clacson made them turn their head to the road. Stefano’s brother stopped his car next to them, leaning out the window. “Sali.” He gestured towards his brother, and Nina had to restrain herself from exhaling a sigh of relief. Giving them one last look, Stefano jerked his head in goodbye and got into the car, before disappearing down the road.
Probably sensing her irritation, Tommy took his case out of the pocket of his jacket, offering her a cigarette. Being an occasional smoker, she hesitated at first, but then she placed one between her lips, hoping that it would soothe her nerves. Tommy took a match and lit it for her, before lighting one for himself. She took a long drag, and although she wasn’t really used to the taste, it did help a bit.
Tommy puffed out the smoke, asking the question that had been burning on his tongue for a while. “Who was that?”
“No one important.” She shrugged, flicking the ashes.
He nodded, understanding that it was her way of telling him not to inquire further. But although it wasn’t his business, he couldn’t help but wonder what could’ve possibly made her mood darken like that. Being a man, he knew the look on that guy’s face all too well, but he could tell there was something more to that.
Nina suddenly threw her cigarette away, regaining her composure. “Don’t you have a gift to buy?”

That same day before lunch, Tommy Shelby gave Agnese the beautiful, expensive necklace he had bought for her, and the whole family knew he had made up his mind. She wore it proudly, with a radiant look on her face, well aware that this was only the beginning. Now they would start to get to know each other, to spend time together, albeit always accompanied by some of the female relatives. Then, when the right time came, a proposal would come, and she’d have what she had been wishing for all her life.
At the lunch, she sat next to Tommy, under the delighted eyes of her mother and aunts. They hadn’t had the chance to talk much until then, but Agnese could already tell she would’ve grown to care for that man. He was handsome, charming, he had decent manners. Despite his reputation, he didn’t seem cruel and he had been respectful towards her in their few interactions.
As for Tommy, Agnese’s beauty hadn’t left him unimpressed. She was a beautiful young woman, and more than once he had to scold himself for letting his eyes wander over the soft, generous curves. Her full, rosy cheeks were particularly pretty, especially when they took on a red shade of bashfulness. She gave the impression of being a gentle and sweet girl, and although he knew he probably wouldn’t be able to love her, with time he might learn to feel some kind of affection towards her.
He glanced over at Nina, who was playing with the food in her plate, scarcely paying attention to conversation going on around her. The light breeze of the garden stirred the few strands of hair that had escaped from her braid, making them brush delicately against her face. She extended a hand in the direction of a bottle of red wine, but it was out of her reach, and she struggled to grab it among the great number of plates, bowls and bottles laying on the table. Apparently being the only one to notice her difficulty, Tommy handed her the bottle, their hands accidentally brushing in the process. It was the smallest touch, barely perceptible, but it was enough for them to lock eyes. He let his fingers linger against hers for a moment, a brief moment that seemed to stretch into infinity, then, as if they had burned themselves, they both retired their hands abruptly. He cleared his throat, bringing his attention back to Agnese, hoping she wouldn’t notice he hadn’t been listening to what she was saying.
Nina poured herself a glass of wine, wishing the alcohol would numb the turmoil of emotions going on inside her. The encounter with Stefano, her aunts’ and cousins’ judgmental stares, the empty conversations, the way everybody acted overjoyed as if they hadn’t been on the brink of a war until just a week before with the very man they were welcoming into the family. Everything was becoming too much, and the only thing she wanted to do was to get up and run to the safety of her room. But she took a deep breath and stayed where she was, knowing that it would ruin the mood. She didn’t need to give her family yet another reason to resent her.
So she was patient, and sooner than she though the lunch was over. The routine was always the same - the women cleaning up, the men smoking, discussing business, and playing cards -, but this time, Nina didn’t even bother to get angry about it. She didn’t have the energy to deal with another negative emotion. She’d help around, and then lock herself in her room, or maybe go for a walk. It was a happy day for Agnese, and she didn’t want to spoil it with her sulking.
In the afternoon, when Tommy and Agnese went out for a walk, with the women of the family walking a few steps behind them, Nina took refuge in her father’s office. It almost felt like a sanctuary, sacred and untouchable, but even though no one was allowed in there without his permission, she never really cared to follow that rule. She found comfort in the dim light and the mahogany furniture, in the smell of books and cigars, in the ticking of the old pendulum clock standing in a corner of the room. It reminded her of a time when she used to sit at her father’s desk, drawing or doing her homework as he read through his papers, and they just enjoyed each other’s presence. It was a simpler time. Or at least, it was for a while. Because even then, she had to face the scourge of being a woman. Because she was seen as a girl before being seen as a child. And she could never understand why she had to fight to stay at school, why her, her cousins and her female friends were expected to retire after elementary school to stay at home and learn how to take care of the house. Why her brothers never had such problems. What she was quick to understand, was that the world wasn’t kind to women, that somehow being a girl meant being less smart, less strong, less capable. That gentle and nurturing were the only things she would ever be allowed to be.
Her father giving her permission to finish school had ignited a spark of hope inside her, hope that things might be different for her, that she could have something more than a family and a house to take care of, that maybe being a wife and a mother wasn’t everything that a woman was fit for. But that spark had been extinguished when she wasn’t allowed to get into university, or to have a part in the family business, not even in the legal side. Yet, she couldn’t bring herself to despise her father, the deep affection she felt towards him was stronger than any kind of resentment. He had always loved and protected her, and he still did.
Sitting on one of the soft chairs with a book in her hands and Winston curled up in her lap, Nina found it hard to concentrate on the words she was reading. She blankly stared at the pages, her mind wandering somewhere else. The sound of the door opening cut through her thoughts, making her raise her head from the book.
Her father stopped in the doorway, putting on an expression that meant to be reproachful, but that was made useless by the softness in his eyes. He actually expected to find her there. His daughter didn’t move from her spot, knowing all too well that he wouldn’t kick her out. He had never done that, and he wouldn’t start now. It was not a secret that Vincenzo had a soft spot for that daughter who was so much like him, which made him overlook behaviours that most fathers wouldn’t accept from their daughters.
He sat on his chair behind the desk, folded his hands in front of him and looked at her, with the air of someone who wanted to say something but didn’t know how. Nina stroked the cat, tension rising inside her as she waited for him to speak.
“I talked with Spinietta.” He started, distractedly rubbing his hands. “Actually, I also talked with his son, Stefano.”
Nina gritted her teeth at the sound of his name, hoping that her father would stop beating around the bush and tell her what was going on already.
Vincenzo exhaled the breath he didn’t even notice he was holding, before straightening his back and going straight to the point. “He wants to marry you.”
Her heart dropped to the pit of her stomach at his words. She blinked, trying to process the words he had just told her, hoping that she had heard wrong, or that it was a misunderstanding. Before she could formulate a coherent sentence, her father spoke again.
“I told him no.” He reassured her. “That at least for now, you don’t want to get married.”
“Good, because I have no intention of marrying-”
“Let me finish.” Her father sternly interrupted her, making her clench her jaw. “I told him no.” He repeated, his tone getting softer again. “But I think you need to start thinking about your future.”
Nina shook her head in disbelief, feeling the heat of anger rising to the back of her neck and spreading on her cheeks. She knew that this moment would come, but a part of her was starting to believe that at least her father would leave her alone.
“It would be good for business, Nina.” He leaned back in his chair, speaking to her as he would to a child. “And he’s a good guy.”
She scoffed, putting the book aside as she got up from her chair. Winston mewed in protest after being dropped so harshly on the ground, and if Nina hadn’t been so enraged, she would’ve felt guilty for forgetting about him. She crossed her arms over her chest, looking her father straight in the eyes. “I am not marrying him.”
Vincenzo nodded, knowing that trying to reason with her would be of no use in that moment. He would wait for her anger to wear down, then he would try to compromise. He didn’t want to fight with his daughter, and he didn’t want her to think he was trying to control her because he wanted her out of the house. They would talk again, maybe after his niece’s marriage, when everybody would be calmer. She would understand that he had her best interests at heart.
Nina walked up to the door, eager to leave that place that had become hostile to her.
“You don’t have to decide now.” Her father’s voice sounded behind her. “Just think about it.”

Laying in his bed, Tommy stared at the ceiling above him, taking deep breaths. The moonlight shining through the open window dimly illuminated the room, casting shadows on the walls. He closed his eyes, hoping that the night breeze would lull him back to sleep, but the shovels wouldn’t stop banging against the wall, keeping him on edge, threatening to break through. Green eyes hunted his dreams. Murderous green eyes, ferocious green eyes, scared green eyes, dying green eyes. A grey man with green eyes, coming for him. It was a matter of time.
He sat up, rubbing his face. On nights like those, he regretted not having opium or whiskey in his room to help him get through them. His throat was so parched it almost burned, and he found himself in an urgent need for water.
He silently exited the room, trying not to make any sound as he went down the stairs in the darkness. A strange noise came to his ears as he got closer to the kitchen, and from the living room he was in he could see that the light was on. When he walked through the door, Nina was facing the counter, fumbling with a kettle. Before Tommy could make his presence known, she turned around, flinching and dropping the knife she was holding.
“Shit.” She hissed, picking up the knife from the floor. She raised her gaze on him, her pupils still flaring, but she relaxed as soon as her brain registered who it was that was standing in front of her. “You scared me.” She mumbled, throwing the knife in the sink.
“I’m sorry.” He held back the smirk threatening to make its way on his face. “I just needed some water.” He explained, walking further into the room.
“Help yourself.” She took a glass from the cupboard and handed it to him, before pointing at the jug on the table.
Tommy poured himself a glass of water, and sighed with relief when the liquid ran down his burning throat. It wasn’t whiskey, but it was better than nothing.
“I was making myself a cup tea, do you want some?”
Tommy raised an eyebrow, glancing at the clock on the wall. “Do you always drink tea at this ungodly hour?” He teased her, taking a seat at the table.
“Only when I can’t sleep.” She replied, grabbing two cups nevertheless. “Are you always up that this ungodly hour?”
“Only when I can’t sleep.”
The room was filled with silence as Nina put the kettle on. The events of the day had troubled her so much that her mind wouldn’t let her sleep, racing without cease. Even though she’d never admit it to herself, a part of her was glad that Tommy was there, that she wasn’t alone with the thoughts inside her head. She sat on a chair in front of him as she waited for the water to heat, resting with her chin on her hand.
After pondering for a few seconds, Tommy squinted his eyes, pointing at her. “I spoke to your cousins, today, and they said some interesting things about you.” He leaned with his back against the chair.
“They do like talking about me.” She joked, mimicking his movement and crossing her arms over her chest. “What did they tell you?”
“That you’re a witch.” He revealed with a mocking tone in his voice. “And that I shouldn’t get on your bad side.”
A look of surprise crossed Nina’s features, mixed with something that Tommy couldn’t quite read. She shook her head, and an incredulous laugh escaped her lips. “So they still think that.” She said, more to herself than to him.
“Why is that?” He furrowed his brows, an amused smile appearing on his face.
“When I was a child there was a girl my age, in the village, we didn’t get along really well.” She started to explain. “She even pulled my braids, once. One day, while she was running around the school courtyard, I stood there whispering to myself: ‘fall, fall’.” She whispered the last two words, the corner of her lips slightly turning upwards. “She actually fell and scraped her knees. My cousins and some of their friends heard me, and word started spreading around that I could lay curses. When a few years later I found Winston, they just came to the conclusion that I was a witch. They thought he was sent by the devil or something.”
If there was one thing that her whole family believed in, it was superstition. For the first few weeks after Nina had taken the black cat in, her aunt Rita wouldn’t even enter their house. But now, calling her a witch was probably the only way of explaining to themselves her behaviour.
“They used to say the same thing about me when I was a boy, you know.” Tommy confessed, seemingly getting lost in some distant memory. “That I had the power to lay curses.” His blue eyes rested on her, shining with a mischievous glint that broke through his ever-unmoved expression. “Only that I didn’t go around with a black cat, but with a screwdriver and a blade.”
For the first time since Nina had met him, Tommy Shelby seemed human. He was always so cold and unfazed that one could hardly tell that he had any emotion at all. That childhood memory seemed to have awakened something in him, but it was something so ephemeral that it went away as quickly as it came, and soon it was as if it was never there.
She got up to turn off the stove, then proceeded put some tea leaves in the cups. “How do you drink your tea?”
“Black.”
“Of course.” She teased him, not really expecting a different answer. She carefully poured the water into the cups, trying not to burn herself in the process. She could feel Tommy’s gaze on her, and it surely didn’t help. Sometimes it felt like he could stare right into her soul.
“So what can I do to get on your good side, eh?” His husky voice broke the silence again.
Nina grabbed a lemon from the basket on the counter, then she placed it on the table along with a knife. “You can start by making yourself useful.”
Tommy frowned, looking at her in confusion. “What’s the lemon for?”
“The tea.” Her eyebrows furrowed as well, his perplexity leaving her as confused as him.
“You put lemon in your tea?”
“Yes.” She nodded. “I drink it with an awful lot of lemon and an awful lot of honey.”
“Sounds terrible.” He murmured.
“You have whiskey for breakfast.” She raised her eyebrows. “You’re in no position to judge.”
“I guess I’m not.” He conceded, tilting his head. He watched as she turned her back on him again, walking towards the counter. She had a quick wit, he had to give her that. He rolled up the sleeves of his undershirt, then he grabbed the knife and started cutting the lemon in half for her, grinning to himself.
In front of their steaming cups of tea, Nina and Tommy found themselves talking about anything and everything, not even fully acknowledging the time going by. Conversation flowed easily between them, and it helped them forget the very troubles that had kept them awake and brought them in that kitchen, even if just for that night. Maybe it was because they both needed it, or maybe because late nights were made for bringing down walls and sharing secrets that couldn’t see the daylight. Maybe it was because it is only in the deepest darkness that one’s true self can no longer be hidden.
But eventually, their night had to come to an end. Standing in the doorway of the kitchen, they exchanged the last few words. Nina’s face suddenly got serious, and she hesitated a bit before speaking again. “Just… be good to her, alright?” She asked him, her voice laced with worry.
She didn’t need to say the name for Tommy to understand who she was referring to. He nodded, and when his eyes met her brown irises, everything became clear. She never hated him. All that time, she had been trying to protect herself, and the people she loved.
As if scared by her own vulnerability, Nina recollected herself, her gaze hardening again. “Yeah, you better do, ‘cause if you don’t, I’ll come all the way to fucking Birmingham to kick your ass.”
Tommy held back a smile, still impressed by her boldness. “You have my word.”
“Good.” She nodded, taking a few steps back. For a few moments, neither of them said anything, waiting for the other to be the first one to go. Deciding it was time to go back to bed, Nina glanced at Tommy one last time. “Goodnight, Mr Shelby.” She said, making to leave.
“Nina,” he called to her, and the sound of her name rolled off his lips so naturally that it was hard to believe he had never pronounced it.
She stopped in her tracks, turning to look at him again.
“Call me Tommy.”

🥹😭🥰 I guess I nailed it then huh? @eclectic-trash
I just want the same for him, he really needed her to be there. I think his life would’ve been a bit different…
Thank you so much for reading and sharing! Sorry for making you cry tho! -but I guess I did my job right- ✨
Hola, Mar!

Turning off the lights of their bedside tables, Tommy drifted to sleep right away and saw the image of his mother wrapping her arms around a younger version of himself protectively, answering all the questions he had about how could his horse toy could not move during the day, or how would drink water if the river was so far away… and he saw her in his dreams smiling adoringly at him before kissing the top of his head.

Thank you so much for sharing @skydisneylover xx
Hola, Mar!
