A/N: Drabble 21 of my 30 days of drabbles. Another one I plan to revisit when I'm in the mood to rip my own heart out.
She finds her first white hair at 32.
She almost doesn’t see it, camouflaged as it is amidst all the platinum blonde. But as she inches ever closer to the mirror to better apply her eyeliner, she spots it. Right above her left temple. A reminder that time passes for them all.
But that isn’t quite true, is it?
“River? Are you ready?”
Rainier’s voice comes from somewhere on the first floor. For once, the sound of it doesn’t fill her with warmth and a sense of belonging, a conviction that there is nothing they can’t do if only they’re together. Instead, it augments the foreboding that’s gripped her since her eyes fell on the visual reminder of the aging process. A process she will go through alone, year after year, until she’s in her sixties and he still looks thirty. Until the day he looks at her and sees a stranger.
She meets her reflection’s stricken gaze. “No,” she calls back. “I’m not ready.”

TCH!MC is an obvious reference to the typical fairytale heroine (MC can be either gender and this troupe isn’t limited to a specific gender but is traditionally limited to female characters) such as Cinderella, Rapunzel or Snow White. These characters come from a difficult or tumultuous life yet due to remaining true to themselves and being kind no matter what, they are ultimately rewarded their happily ever after.
Yet TCH2 takes it a step further and addresses the criticism and questions around these types of characters, such as their seemingly ‘lack of power’ which has become a prevalent topic of debate especially in the modern age. Characters like Cinderella and Snow White are criticised for being too ‘traditionally feminine’ (with these criticisms more often than not being stemmed from the idea that power means to take on an active role and have physical strength, diminishing other strengths, although it is worth noting that the question itself is not entirely problematic, especially when there’s a trend of female characters rather than allowing them varied roles).
MC has insecurities and fears regarding their lack of traditional power and how this disallows them from being able to protect those they love. Kieran unknowingly feeds into this by putting MC on the sidelines. We see how these insecurities affect MC’s previously open heart, as it is no longer considered pure and true. MC’s must choose between traditional power and strength or their own that stem from their mortality and heart.
And they choose the first option.
And it does them no good. They choose wrong.
They are not able to stop Opulence or do anything to truly sway the battle towards their side. By discarding their kind heart and love, they become an empty shell and only manage to hurt others.
Only when Kieran’s love is able to restore their heart, like they once did for them, is MC able to make a plan to stop Opulence and succeed. Through their mortal ability to lie and their love for others.
