Our Favorite Explorers of the 20th Century

The 20th century marked a period of exploration and breakthroughs. It witnessed achievements, like the flight across the North Pole and the initial ascent of Mount Everest, which revolutionized our understanding of the world. These explorers were driven by a thirst for adventure and a profound curiosity to unravel the enigmas that surrounded them. From the Arctic to the majestic Antarctic from the depths of the ocean to the towering peaks of mountains these intrepid adventurers fearlessly ventured into uncharted and often treacherous territories. They willingly risked their lives in pursuit of knowledge and discovery serving as a timeless inspiration, for generations of thrill seekers. The early 20th century was an amazing time for exploration and though there are many great explorers that have achieved incredible feats, these are Kati's and I favorites:

Gertrude Bell

Gertrude Bell, a traveler and explorer ventured to countries in the Middle East and North Africa. She embarked on journeys to Syria, Iraq, Iran and Egypt. Notably she achieved the distinction of being the first woman to conquer Mount Ararat in Turkey and explore the city of Palmyra in Syria—a feat unmatched by any European woman at that time. Moreover, Gertrude Bell documented her expeditions extensively through publications including books and articles. Beyond her travel endeavors Gertrude Bell held a role as an officer in the Middle East. Her contributions played a part in shaping present day Iraq—she actively participated in defining borders and establishing the government structure. Additionally, she played a role in endorsing King Faisal I of Iraq. Such remarkable work earned her the deserved title of "Queen of the Desert." Gertrude Bells impact on the Middle East remains profound today. Her influence helped shape modern day Iraq and her written works continue to be studied. Moreover, she blazed trails for women, in exploration and travel—an inspiration for generations to come. Remembered as a tenacious woman who left a mark on the region through her adventurous spirit and unwavering determination.

Jane Goodall

Goodalls research conducted at Gombe Stream National Park brought about a shift, in the field of primatology. She was the first to witness chimpanzees employing tools, which challenged the held belief that only humans possessed this capability. Additionally she meticulously recorded the behaviors of chimpanzees such as their utilization of language and their ability to form deep emotional connections. Through her groundbreaking work Goodall has offered insights into primate behavior and evolution effectively narrowing the gap between humans and animals. The impact of Goodalls work remains enduring and far reaching. She has consistently voiced her support for animal rights and environmental conservation while dedicating herself tirelessly to safeguarding endangered species and their habitats. In 1977 she established the Jane Goodall Institute with a mission to protect chimpanzees and their habitats while advocating for development in Africa. Furthermore she has been a champion for raising awareness about climate change and inspiring action, towards its resolution. Goodalls legacy is one marked by compassion, bravery and optimism. As she wisely stated; "Your actions hold power to make a difference; you must choose what kind of difference you wish to make." Kati and I saw her speak.  She is one of the most inspiring people you could ever come in contact with.

Ernest Shackleton

Ernest Shackleton, an explorer renowned for his Antarctic expeditions gained fame during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Born in 1874 Shackleton possessed an ambitious spirit that propelled him to leave his mark on the world. His leadership skills and meticulous planning made him an exceptional organizer while his ability to adapt and think on his feet showcased his resourcefulness. Throughout his expeditions he faced challenges that he skillfully overcame. In 1914 Shackleton embarked on his most daring expedition yet; a quest to cross the Antarctic continent. With a crew of 27 men and, aboard the ship named Endurance he set sail. However, luck was not in their favor from the beginning as the Endurance became trapped in the grip of the Weddell Sea. Undeterred by this setback Shackletons determination never wavered as he remained committed to fulfilling their mission. The Endurance remained imprisoned by ice for ten months while Shackleton and his crew fought to survive amidst Antarctica's environment. Despite their circumstances Shackletons ingenuity and quick thinking kept morale high among the crew as they persevered against all odds. He arranged hunting and fishing expeditions. He even coordinated a soccer tournament to maintain their spirits. It took 10 months for the Endurance to be eventually crushed by the ice, which led Shackleton and his crew to abandon the ship. Shackleton and his crew found themselves stranded in the Antarctic for two years until they were ultimately rescued. Despite the conditions Shackleton managed to keep his crew alive and, in relatively good spirits. His exceptional organizational skills and ability to improvise played a role in the expedition's success. Today Shackletons leadership legacy is revered, serving as an inspiration for those who aspire to explore.

Ed Hillary & Tenzing Norgay

In the year 1953 Hillary and Tenzing Norgay achieved a milestone by being the first climbers to conquer the summit of Mount Everest. This incredible accomplishment thrust them into the limelight earning them fame. Their achievements were so significant that they were both honored with knighthoods by Queen Elizabeth II in that year. In 1958 Hillary led an expedition to the South Pole, a feat that hadn't been successfully accomplished since Robert Falcon Scotts fated attempt back in 1912. Additionally in 1955 he also led an expedition that triumphantly scaled the peak of Makalu. Apart from his mountaineering achievements Hillary was also an aviator. He boldly piloted a single engine aircraft to reach the South Pole in 1958 and made history as the person to fly over Mount Everest in a helicopter during 1977. Furthermore, he chronicled his adventures through books he authored including notable titles like "High Adventure" and "View, from the Summit."

Roald Amundsen

Roald Amundsen, an explorer gained fame for his achievement of being the first person to reach the South Pole. Born in 1872 he embarked on a career as a sailor in the merchant navy. In 1903 he initiated his expedition to the Arctic region, where he accomplished the feat of traversing the Northwest Passage before setting his sights on conquering the South Pole. In 1911 Amundsen and his team successfully reached their destination and etched their names in history as pioneers. The key factors behind Amundsens triumph were planning and invaluable knowledge gained from Arctic communities. Additionally, he pioneered the use of dogs in exploration, which provided a significant advantage. Amundsens remarkable achievement at the South Pole propelled him to national hero status in Norway and solidified his legacy as one of the renowned explorers of the 20th century.

This is probably mine and Kati's favorite place to stay.  The hotels are much cheaper than Positano with basically the same views.  When we go to the Amalfi coast, the first place we look for rooms is Praiano.

The Amalfi Coast boasts some of the planet's most beautiful beaches. Apart, from the known beaches there are numerous hidden treasures waiting to be explored. One of the kept secrets lies in Marina di Praia, a beach tucked away in the quaint fishing village of Praiano. This hidden gem boasts waters and breathtaking vistas of the Mediterranean Sea. Kati loves going here.  Typically, it is close to where we are staying, and the water is magnificent.

Uncovering the Ancient Villages of the Amalfi Coast

Italy's Amalfi Coast is home to some of the picturesque villages in existence. From Praiano, a fishing village to Ravello, a hilltop town this coastal region holds countless hidden gems. Among them is Scala, a village located in the hills above Amalfi that offers a history and incredible panoramas of the Mediterranean Sea. Scala holds a special place for Kati and I.  The last time we stayed in the Amalfi Coast we had family and though we stayed near Praiano, we had a great dinner in Scala with amazing views and incredible food. We also recommend, depending on the time of year, to rent a Vespa.  A great way to get around the Amalfi Coast.

Exploring Gastronomy on the Amalfi Coast

The delectable cuisine found along the Amalfi Coast is renowned worldwide. From seafood dishes to handmade pasta varieties this region caters, to every taste bud. However, beyond these delights lie numerous undiscovered treasures waiting to be savored. Among these gems is limoncello—a specialty crafted from lemons grown in this region—a delightful liqueur that should not be missed by any visitor venturing along the scenic Amalfi Coast. But we discovered an even more delicious liqueur.  Meloncello.  Though it cannot be bought in the US, you can have it shipped directly from Italy.  It is wonderful.

The Amalfi Coast boasts breathtaking wonders that will leave you in awe. From the cliffs found in Cilento National Park to the enchanting gardens of Villa Rufolo this coastal paradise is teeming with hidden gems. Among these treasures lies a kept secret – Grotta dello Smeraldo. Nestled near Conca dei Marini this mesmerizing cave is adorned with waters and is an absolute must visit for every traveler exploring the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi Coast houses some of Italys exquisite art and architectural gems. From churches in Amalfi to magnificent palaces in Ravello this coastal region hides treasures waiting to be discovered. Among these hidden gems lies Duomo di Amalfi, a cathedral located at the heart of Amalfi. A true masterpiece of architecture it stands as a destination for any visitor exploring the wonders of the Amalfi Coast.

Immersing Yourself in Local Markets along the Amalfi Coast

Indulge your senses as you explore markets that characterize life along the shores of the Amalfi Coast. Wander through streets in Amalfi or immerse yourself amidst stalls in Positano – these coastal towns harbor hidden gems, within their bustling markets. One of the kept secrets lies, in Marina di Praias market, which can be found in the fishing village of Praiano. This market is a gem where you can discover produce artisan crafts and unique souvenirs.

The Optimal Time, for Exploring Amalfi Coast

For an experience exploring Amalfi Coast its recommended to plan your visit during spring or fall months. During this time, you'll enjoy weather and smaller crowds. Summer months can get hot and crowded while winters tend to be chilly and wet. Regardless of when you choose to visit Amalfi Coast promises an experience. But also keep in mind the Ravello Festival.  The Ravello Festival is organized by the Ravello Foundation and supported by the Campania Region, will open typically during July and August of each year.  The festival includes symphonic concerts, jazz concerts, and other special events.  

Our Final Word

The Amalfi Coast is wonderful.  Not just for the incredible views but because of the friends we have made there and the experiences we have had. It doesn't have to be as expensive as you think it is.  There are many wonderful places to stay outside of Positano.  Positano is way overrated in our opinion.  Really beautiful and great photos, but over touristy with mostly mediocre food and overpriced accommodations. Take our advice.  Stay in a town like Praiano.  Only 5 miles from Positano with incredible views at half the price.  The Amalfi Coast is wonderful.

The Impact of Travel: How Traveling Can Change Your Perspective

I hate to say this, but we are well aware of the criticism of us traveling so much.  With a combination of mocking and jealousy, we realize that some people find it absurd that we would travel to India to experience Tigers in the wild, and just ridiculous that we went to the Arctic to see wild polar bears. Imagine being criticized because you want to learn more about the world.  To see for ourselves the impact of climate change, the reduction in the wild areas of the world, and to be in the presence of animals in the wild. We want to experience other cultures and meet people from around the world.  We feel that though travel has become increasingly popular among people of all ages offering a way to discover destinations, embrace novel experiences and expand one's horizons, travels impact extends beyond exploration. It can deeply influence an individual's emotional wellbeing. One of the aspects of travel is the opportunity it provides to immerse oneself in diverse cultures. By journeying to countries and cities we can gain insights into the world that surrounds us. We learn about customs, beliefs and values while developing an appreciation for the rich tapestry of global cultures. Travel also opens doors to embracing experiences. Through visits to locations, we have the chance to engage in activities to explore unfamiliar landscapes and immerse ourselves in distinct cultures. This can serve as a way to step out of our comfort zone and gain a perspective on life. Moreover, traveling allows us to develop an understanding of the world by immersing ourselves in cultures and ways of life. We want to retain that wide-eyed wonderment that we had as children.  We want to continue to learn.  We want to continue to experience what the world has to offer. And we want to inspire others to do the same.  

Expanding Our Perspectives

Traveling also has the potential to expand our perspectives. When we explore destinations we gain insight into the world around us. We learn about cultures, beliefs and values which fosters an appreciation for the rich tapestry of human experiences. Additionally witnessing how our own culture compares to others can lead to an appreciation for our identity and heritage. I cannot think of anything more important these days than having an appreciation of different cultures and people.  We see so much hate and disdain especially in social media.

Meeting these boys in Uganda made us want to raise money for their schooling. To get to know the culture and peoples of Egypt, the Arctic, the Masai of Kenya and to still be in contact with them fills us with joy and gives us a better understanding of the world and the people that live in it.

Cultivating New Skills

Traveling offers opportunities for growth and skill development. As we venture into places, we have the chance to learn languages, engage in unique activities and broaden our knowledge about the world. Exploring cultures also enables us to better understand our cultural background fostering a deeper sense of self awareness.

Deepening Self Understanding

Another benefit of traveling is its ability to deepen one's self-understanding. We find that by exploring destinations we deepen our self-awareness and gain insight into our values and beliefs. Traveling also has the potential to strengthen connections. Through visiting different locations, we acquire a profound understanding of the world and its inhabitants. Moreover, witnessing differences serves as a catalyst for appreciating our heritage while embracing the richness of other cultures.

Our Final Word

The impact of travel extends beyond the adventure. It offers the chance to immerse oneself in customs, acquire perspectives, broaden horizons, cultivate new skills, foster self-reflection and forge lasting relationships. So, though we know that there is criticism of us traveling, we will not stop.  For us, it is just too important.

Octoberfest is an event, in Munich, Germany that celebrates culture. It is renowned as the premier beer festival and folk festival in the world taking place from September to early October each year. With millions of visitors from all corners of the globe it's a time for people to come together and revel in traditions, including food, music and certainly beer. The origins of Octoberfest date back to 1810 when it was initially organized to commemorate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe Hildburghausen. Originally featuring horse races this celebration has evolved over time to incorporate attractions like carnival rides, parades and notably beer consumption. Today it stands as a symbol of heritage cherished worldwide. Undoubtedly the highlight of Octoberfest lies in its assortment of beers. This grand festival showcases over 6 million liters sourced from six breweries in Munich. Additionally, visitors can relish cuisine such, as sausages, pretzels and succulent roasted chicken while enjoying exciting carnival rides and lively musical performances. It truly offers an opportunity to immerse oneself in culture while having a splendid time. Octoberfest has had an influence on culture bringing people together to commemorate their heritage. This festival has become an emblem of culture and is celebrated globally. There is even an Octoberfest celebration here is southwest Florida. Additionally, it has made an impact by generating annual revenues exceeding 1 billion euros.

The Rio Carnival of Brazil

The Rio Carnival is an event held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its renowned, as one of the liveliest and known festivals worldwide attracting millions of visitors annually. This celebration is about joy and merriment featuring parades, energetic music and extravagant costumes. It serves as a time for people to unite and commemorate the culture and traditions of Brazil. The Rio Carnival finds its roots in the festival called Saturnalia dedicated to honoring the god Saturn. This festival involved feasting and revelry eventually spreading to regions, across the globe. In Brazil Portuguese settlers introduced this tradition during the century. Over time it has transformed into the colorful celebration that we witness today.

The Songkran Festival of Thailand

The Songkran Festival is an event that celebrates the Thai New Year. It takes place from April 13th to April 15th every year. Is a time of festivities and introspection. During the festival people engage in activities such, as water battles, parades and traditional rituals. The term "Songkran" originates from the Sanskrit word "" which signifies a period of transition or change. This name aptly reflects the festivals purpose as it marks the transition from one year to another. Thai people have been celebrating the Songkran Festival for centuries. Its origins can be traced back to the kingdom of Sukhothai established in 1238. Initially it was an occasion for paying respects to elders and expressing gratitude for blessings received in the year. As time passed new elements were added to make it more vibrant including water fights, parades and traditional ceremonies. The Songkran Festival involves celebrations. One popular activity is engaging in water fights, which provide a respite from Thailands scorching sun. During the festivities individuals actively participate in parades adorned with Thai attire and accompanied by lively music. Additionally part of the celebration involves releasing birds and fish as presenting food and beverages to the revered monks.

The La Tomatina Festival of Spain

The Tomatina Festival takes place annually in Buñol, a town, in the Valencia region of Spain. It's a one of a kind and enjoyable tradition where people engage in a tomato fight. Throughout the years this festival has gained popularity attracting visitors from around the globe. Joining in on the fun is a way to immerse yourself in culture while having a great time with friends and family. Since 1945 Buñol has been hosting the Tomatina Festival. It is said to have originated from an altercation between two groups of individuals in the town square. Although authorities intervened to stop the fight throwing tomatoes at each other became a tradition. As time went on this festival grew exponentially in popularity. Now draws participation from people from all over the world. The Tomatina Festival occurs on a Wednesday of August each year and requires weeks of preparation beforehand. The town square gets adorned with banners and flags. Also, trucks filled with tomatoes generously donated by farmers line up along the streets. The Tomatina Festival kicks off with a fireworks show. It is then followed by the tradition of retrieving a ham from a greased pole. Once the ham is successfully obtained, the thrilling tomato fight commences. Participants engage in an hour long tomato tossing extravaganza until a signal prompts them to halt. After the battle the streets are washed down. Diligent efforts are made to tidy up the town square.

You can encounter bears tailed deer and wild turkeys during your visit. There's also a range of bird species to spot, such as eagles, peregrine falcons and red-tailed hawks. Additionally, you'll find plant species like the chestnut, Fraser fir and red spruce. For enthusiasts there are hiking trails in the Smoky Mountains suitable for all skill levels. The Unethical Nature of Zoos: Why we Oppose Them

Kati and I have traveled far and wide to see incredible animals in the wild.  Nothing can compare to seeing a wild Tiger or Polar Bear. To see a leopard in a tree after a kill or feel the ground shake when a herd of elephants are close. We feel so lucky to have been able to experience so much of the animal kingdom.  I remember when I was younger my parents would take me to the zoo.  We loved it.  We loved seeing the animals and didn't even think about their treatment.  Someone once said that when younger they loved zoos because they loved animals.  When they got older they hated zoos because they loved animals.  I feel the same way.   For centuries zoos have been ingrained in culture. However recent years have seen a surge, in discussions about the implications of keeping animals in captivity. While zoos were originally intended to educate the public and preserve species, they often fall short of achieving these goals. The unethical nature of zoos becomes evident when considering the compromised quality of life for animals their impact on animal populations the negative effects on animal behavior due to captivity and the unsustainable nature of zoos.

The Quality of Life for Animals

Animals held in captivity often experience a diminished quality of life compared to their counterparts in the wild. They are confined to enclosures that limit their ability to engage in behaviors and restrict their freedom to roam and explore. Consequently, this confinement leads to psychological distress well as elevated levels of stress hormones circulating within their bodies. Research also shows that captive animals are more prone to health issues such as obesity, heart disease and arthritis. I remember seeing polar bears in the zoo.  They typically had a small part with water.  Seeing them in the wild, you see that they swim for miles and that a zoo has a poor representation of a polar bear's habitat. Or think about captive Orcas.  Basically living in a bathtub.  

The Impact on Wild Animal Populations

The impact that zoos have on animal populations is a cause, for concern too. The practice of capturing animals, from the wild for zoos can disrupt the balance of ecosystems. Contribute to declines in population. Furthermore, breeding animals in captivity can result in inbreeding, which reduces diversity and increases the risk of disease. Another documented concern is the impact of captivity on animal behavior. Animals housed in zoos often exhibit behaviors like pacing, self-mutilation and aggression. These behaviors arise from a lack of stimulation and an inability to engage in behaviors. Additionally captive animals can become overly reliant on interaction leading to psychological distress. The sustainability of zoos is also an issue to consider. Operating a zoo requires resources such as land, water and energy. Additionally, the cost associated with caring for animals can be extremely high making it challenging for zoos to provide adequate care. Fortunately, there are alternatives that offer living conditions, for animals while also contributing to species conservation efforts. For instance, sanctuaries and wildlife rehabilitation centers offer a nurturing environment, for animals enabling them to engage in their behaviors. Moreover, organizations like the World Wildlife Fund are actively involved in safeguarding animal populations through the establishment of protected areas and participation in conservation initiatives. But be careful.  Kati and I have also visited a so-called sanctuary in Naples, Florida which was awful.  Even worse than a zoo. But a Tiger kept at home, a zoo, or in Disney is not a wild tiger.  There are approximately 5,000 tigers in captivity in the United States.  There are a total of less than 4,000 wild tigers left in the world.

To sum up there is evidence pointing towards issues concerning zoos. Animals kept in captivity often suffer from a lack of opportunities to engage in their behaviors while having a devastating impact on animal populations. Considering these factors shows that zoos may not be the choice, for conservation efforts. Thankfully there are alternatives that prioritize animal wellbeing and contribute positively to species conservation. We have made a conscious decision to not go to a zoo or visit Disney's Animal Kingdom.  We have traveled the world to see and learn about animals in the wild. We have seen incredible animals do incredible things. We have been lucky.   It is our duty to make decisions that ensure animals are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Hallstatt is incredible, but also can become over crowded. There are many other beautiful villages in Austria to explore.

The country also boasts cities like Zurich, Geneva and Basel. Additionally, Switzerland is famous for its ski resorts like Zermatt and St. Moritz.

Switzerland can be expensive but with a little planning it doesn't have to be. With towns like this, do not miss it.
