Photo @stephen_matera // Aerial view of the Juneau Ice field in summer. It's hard to comprehend how much ice lies below. The Juneau Ice field, just north of Juneau, is the fifth largest ice field in the western hemisphere at an astounding 3,900 square kilometers. Photograph by @paulnicklen for @natgeo I took this photograph while guiding Flip Nicklin on a National Geographic Assignment in Churchill Manitoba. The year was 1996 and I was just starting to have my first dreams of becoming at National Geographic photographer. After this trip, Flip began to mentor me and taught me the importance of story-telling and journalism, which ultimately landed me my first story at @natgeo. Since then, I have mentored many photographers and primarily teach them about the importance of becoming conservation photojournalists. Scientists predict that the Arctic will be void of all sea ice in the summer months in the next 10 to 30 years having dire consequences for polar bear populations. #followme on @paulnicklen to see how all species need healthy ecosystems. Through @sea_legacy and @natgeo we use the power of photography to connect global audiences to urgent and important issues like #climatechange and its effects on ecosystems. #mentor #mentorship #gratitude #polarbear #nature #beauty #nature #mother #love

Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - Kačna jama (cave) is situated near Divača, in Slovenia, which is located at an altitude of 435 m (1500ft). The cave is 280 m (900ft) deep and is the third longest cave in Slovenia. The iconic twin skylight portals allow cave explorers access into the cave where the Reka River can be seen again flowing steadily underground towards the coast. Ever since I first saw a picture of these majestic twin portals filtering sunlight into the cave, I dreamed of one day visiting it with my camera. Finally, a few months ago, my dream came true. Over the next few weeks, I will unravel a portfolio of photographs that was shot for @NatGeoAdventure from the famous river caves of Slovenia, birth place of speleology and home to the 'human fish'. With my caving colleagues I visited 8 caves, each one varied and different with its own personality. For more from this amazing story, please follow the link in the bio of @shonephoto. Photograph by David Chancellor @chancellordavid - Sunset in the Cairngorm National Park, located in northeast Scotland, officially established as a park in 2003. At 1,467 square miles, it is Britain’s largest National Park and located within the heart of the Scottish Highlands. A landscape shaped by the ice age, peat rivers, lochs and ancient forests, a rare wildlife stronghold, it's categorised as a protected landscape -“Imagination is haunted by the swiftness of the creatures that live on the mountain - eagle and peregrine falcon, red deer and mountain hare. The reason for their swiftness is severely practical: food is so scarce up there that only those who can move swiftly over vast stretches of ground may hope to survive. The speed, the whorls and torrents of movement, are in plain fact the mountain's own necessity. But their grace is not necessity. Or if it is - if the swoop, the parabola, the arrow-flight of hooves and wings achieve their beauty by strict adherence to the needs of function - so much the more is the mountain's integrity vindicated. Beauty is not adventitious but essential.” - The Living Mountain by Scottish writer and poet Nan Shepherd (1893-1981) To see more of my work and projects in the Cairngorms National Park, and elsewhere, follow me here @natgeo and @chancellordavid @cairngormsnationalpark #scotland #wildlife #conservation #conserving #wild

Photograph by @thomaspeschak I love photographing animals doing surprising and unusual things. For a few years now I have photographed marine wildlife surfing waves from an underwater perspective. I have successfully shot wave-riding turtles, fur seals, dolphins and even marine iguanas, but manta rays had eluded me. Until the day a fierce current pulled me into shallow water on Hanifaru Bay’s reef flat. Busy fighting the current and duck diving under breaking waves I almost missed the manta ray in the same predicament as me. A large wave broke almost directly on top of the manta, but it did not seem bothered and effortlessly surfed past me into the lagoon. Shot on expedition with @mantatrust and @fonassociation Follow @thomaspeschak for more manta rays doing incredible and unexpected things!
