Marion Johnson read aloud as he, Luis, Tim and Hawk sat gathered around the clubhouse dining table, poring over the recently published article in Baseball Digest.
“‘If the mild-mannered, spectacle-wearing Traveler’s starter Tim Laughlin is the league’s Clark Kent, then his team captain and seasoned catcher, Hawkins Fuller, is Superman. More than one female fan has lamented that Fuller’s gorgeous, notoriously clean-shaven face is unfairly obscured by the cage of a catcher’s mask, but perhaps the mask prevents mere mortals from reading what’s really happening behind those piercing blue eyes. In fact, after spending a few days with Fuller’s Superman, one begins to sense that this version may have been written by Kerouac or Camus, baseball’s antihero for the ages.’”
Hawk leaned back in his chair, voice casual, but his palms had definitely started to sweat. “Hmm, an antihero, huh? That’s one way to spin it.”
Ignoring him, Marion went on. “‘Fuller names Sandy Koufax as his baseball hero, not due to his record or talent, but primarily due to his ability to remain fiercely private. Dressed impeccably in clothing that likely costs more than a sports reporter’s annual salary, the charming, witty, and engaging Hawkins Fuller can talk for upwards of three hours at a stretch, but once he’s tucked himself into his Porsche 928 and driven away, you realize that your notebook is empty.’”
“None of this is going to stop women from throwing their panties at you on game days, Hawk, so don’t worry,” Luis offered with a quirk of his brow.
“I’ve been meaning to ask about that. Do the women bring extra underwear to throw on the field or are they taking them off right there in the stands?,” asked a horrified Tim. “Those poor bat boys.”
“What about poor me?”
“After this article, Hawk, I don’t know how much more sympathy is in your future.” Marion kept reading. “‘If you ask Hawk, he plays baseball because he can. The son of former Phillies owner, Horace, and All-American Girls League great, Estelle, some might say that Fuller was born with a silver bat in his mouth.’”
“No one would ever say that…born with a silver bat. That’s preposterous.” Tim was indignant on Hawk’s behalf, which was sweet, but wholly unnecessary. “This is a hatchet job.”
“Down, Killer.” Hawk patted Tim’s arm lightly despite the rock sitting in the pit of his stomach. He’d intended to fly under the radar and this felt…too close to the sun for his liking, but the beauty of baseball was that the season was so long that he could blend easily into the background soon enough. “It’s good. Really. Publicity is publicity.”

Do you respond to comments?
Yes, both literally and figuratively. I try to write a response to everyone but I’ve noticed a pattern recently where I drop off at the end of posting because I have a hard time feeling finished and if I leave some comments unanswered, I never have to say goodbye to a story. Figuratively, comments water my crops and keep me nourished. Without them, my writing brain withers.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Probably a Mindy Project joint I wrote with @alittlenutjob where Mindy and Danny don’t end up together but Mindy and Peter do.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Probably I swallow the sound, which some people call the stroke fic. No spoilers, but the ending is one of my faves, mostly because I was able to write a joke in it that someone I deeply admire told me was Dan Levy show quality.
Do you get hate on fics?
Not so far, and let’s please not take that as an invitation lol.
Do you write smut?
Yes.
Craziest crossover
I can’t say I’ve committed to a crossover.

Not that I know of.

Not unless podfic counts as a translation.
Have you ever cowritten a fic?
Yes, multiple times with multiple peeps. I love that process and I think I’m a decent collaborator because people offer to do it again 😂.

David and Patrick will forever float my boat.
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Aw, poor Mafia!Pat and accidental marriage in Vegas.
What are your writing strengths?
Emotional arcs, insight into behaviors, wit, warmth, and copious amounts of research to get details right.
What are your writing weaknesses?
My own self-doubt and quickly running out of words to describe kissing and touching. I would love to write smut in an uninhibited manner, but repression!
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
If it serves a purpose. I’ve never needed to use it, but I would.
First fandom you’ve written in?
The Mindy Project was the first I ever posted but I wrote fanfic as a kid, not knowing it was fanfic. Nor fandom lol. We shan’t speak of it.
Favourite fic you’ve written?
I would love to say they’re all my children and I can’t choose between them, but ackkkk, I don’t know. I’m happy to have produced all of them and there are none I’d take back or orphan. Some were easier to write than others. Fine! They’re all my children! Don’t make me Sophie’s Choice it!

But ultimately so satisfying when they reunited after time apart. Such a well written story and for those who love angst fics, this is one of the best there is!"

Part of Hawk wished he could view the stadium again through those same fresh optimistic eyes, but the reality was, his eyes had never been that fresh. He’d been around major league baseball his whole life, and playing for the Washington Travelers had always felt like a foregone conclusion, never an opportunity. Certainly never something that stopped him in his tracks and caused him to look around. But Tim did stop, because this was something that he had dreamt of but never quite expected to become reality, and Hawk was there to witness it. And as his captain, to help usher Tim into a role, no, a life that would either make him or break him, if he could stick around long enough.
In the shadow of the tunnel, Hawk cupped Tim’s elbow, allowing his hand to linger long enough to say, “Welcome to the big leagues, Tim Laughlin.”
He meant it.
