music played a huge part in much of link's time in both hyrule & termina - of all the songs he's learned over the years, does he have a favourite ? a least favourite ? did he care for music once all was said & done, or could he have gone without hearing it again for the rest of his life ?
ohohoho everybody’s favorite topic: those darn catchy ocarina tunes that will (and have) haunt link to his deathbed.
link has a complicated relationship with music, for, as seen in twilight princess, he still has a strong tether to its ability to convey emotions, a way of connecting his heart and soul to that of his descendent (tp link), and singing to the world the stories of old. yet, for all of its merits, there is a melancholic bitterness that accompanies it.
a simplistic tune such as epona’s song still bears its original warmth, bringing to mind the sweet, soft-voiced lullaby malon would hum to him when night terrors roused him from sleep. it carries the scent of sun-warmed hay, the velvety touch of epona’s lips nibbling on his ear, of a summer sky without a hint of clouds in it, and all of the peaceful tranquility that awaited him at lon lon ranch at the end of his long journey. it is, perhaps, the only song that he learned that has almost no ill-meaning attached to it.
in contrast, the holy song for the door of time, the song of time, is bittersweet. the heavenly tune connected to the very goddesses themselves reminds him of what childhood was robbed from him, molded at such a young, tender age into a soldier to wage war in a battle that never needed to involve him. through it, he had forged a friendship with the very princess of hyrule herself---but at what cost? the countless aged scars on his body outnumber the sweet memories made, and in his death, he still questions if all of his actions had been righteous and his own, or a form of puppetry by the goddesses’ pulling his strings for their bidding, for their own definition of ‘justice’.
saria’s song makes him think of what he had to walk away from, what he could never return to. the song of healing can only repair so much, bringing only temporary peace and clarity to departed souls, but incapable of bringing back the dead or calming calamity. the sun’s song, initially a melody so bright and warm, became a weapon against the undead, images of townspeople he had met in brief passing as a child, now forced to walk as corpses under an eternally stormy sky, burnt into memory.
would he choose to forgo these memories, cast them away into a chest and toss away the key? sometimes, he does. there is a shame that surrounds those memories that no one else has, the experiences dismissed as nightmares, and melodies so strikingly similar to ones he once played often trigger panic attacks, episodes that have fellow soldiers wondering if he had finally lost his head, townspeople wary of whether or not he could truly serve them, and leaves malon at a desperate loss how to soothe his irreparable soul.
but these experiences shaped him, made him who he was--he would not have met malon nor epona without his journey, his friendship with princess zelda would be nonexistent, and through song, he remains tied in some way to saria, distant as they must now be.
the worst part of it all is simply the inability to pass it down, to tell the stories of his journey, and knowing it must all fade into obscurity, just like him.

bransles:
the words flutter in his ears,  resonating like some ghostly echo,  as ghastly as the wolf himself.  the slightest tug on his coat was more than enough to stop him in his tracks,  lest the thing tear  —  his clothes were far from inexpensive,  so as if he’d let it be ruined by some goddess’s lap dog.  he turned to look down at the mutt with an awful mixture of disdain and determination burning in his eyes like a field of marigolds on fire.
dangerous?  had octavo not been walking a dangerous path the entire time,  with him trying to stop him at nearly every turn?  the voice that lingered in the air between them before had not been so … what would he call this?  more serious,  but it wasn’t as if the wolf clearly wasn’t serious before.
the portal that sat in front of them would lead to the future where ganon was meant to wait for him.  and perhaps his death awaited there,  as well.  just as the fortune teller had foretold.  where octavo had once been indignant,  it was quickly replaced with curiosity;  what was the wolf sensing beyond that threshold?
“ i opened the portal to when ganon is supposed to have risen to power, ”    he began,  though voice firm,    “ it will lead me to the beast,  and i will face him. ”
the wolf already knew that.
“ do you sense it?  ganon’s power? ”    all the more reason for him to step through and try with his life to put an end to it.
“ if i die,  at least i may be remembered for how i faced him head - on,  then forgotten as an unfortunate causality. ”
a heroic destiny was not what awaited octavo through that portral. or, so was what link felt he could sense, the powerful presence bearing down upon him foreboding, ominous---but not what either had suspected. the dark magic creeping slow into their world was strangely familiar, and to the ignorant, it could be easily mistaken for that of ganondorf’s sorcery.
as one terribly familiar with a power so suffocatingly evil, link knew this not to be him that laid ahead.
... no. ears pressed forward to listen tucked back flat against his skull, upper lip twitching with the beginnings of a growl. a different evil lies beyond, one that may shatter the world as you know it.
an evil that even he, a being so ancient he had seen the rise and fall of countless devils and demons, could not fathom existing beyond, had not suspected, and he knew that octavo would have never seen in his future, either. perhaps it was not his mortal death that awaited him, but the death of all that he knew and trusted.
link’s teeth unlatched from the hem of his coat, allowing it to fall slack back against octavo’s leg.
fine then, face the destiny you have so desperately sought. but beware, for it is not as what you had foreseen.

MODERN : AU
in a time long past the events that bestowed link the title of hero of time, link is reborn--in the future. ... and by future, it’s just modern day hyrule. cars, fancy phones, and the latest technology dominates the once medieval kingdom that has changed with the advancement of mankind. magic and science go hand in hand to create the harmonious balance that the kingdom’s royalty strive to maintain in order to maintain favor with the goddesses, while continuing to progress with the endless march of time.
some things, however, are best left as they were in the olden days. outside of the capitol city, lon lon ranch continues its predecessors’ business with a focus on dairy production, and a secondary venture into work and race horse breeding. owned by talon, who inherited it from his father, and run by malon, his firstborn and only daughter destined to take over the ranch one day, link works as a farmhand in return for room and board, and has been under the family’s employment since his early teens. now a twenty-something, college-aged adult, the tricky aspect of trying to find one’s path in life has left him tip-toeing around the choice of staying where it is familiar and comfortable, or venturing into the big city like the rest of his peers.
extra details:
he has an expired driving permit, and has not once tried to get his license. talon tried teaching link once in the old farm truck used to bring bales of hay out to the fields, and by some demonic curse, link somehow managed to set the engine ablaze going at exactly a single mile an hour. ever since, he’s adamantly refused to enter the driver’s seat, and takes his horse instead if traveling by foot isn’t a reasonable option.
owns a draft horse named epona. originally a working mare owned by talon, when seeing their bond, he gave her to link as a birthday gift. epona is a south german coldblood clydesdale mix, a behemoth of a mare trained for hauling heavy products, carriage work, and whatever else is needed of her. most remarkable traits is her blood red coat, her brilliant white feathering and facial markings, along with her mane and tail, and her intelligent personality. she is well-known on the ranch to have a knack for stealing any candies you may have in your pockets, and being a glutton easily won over by snacks.
has a mysterious, triangular birthmark on the back of his left hand. it is slightly darker than his natural skin tone, and many joke it is a sign of being a chosen hylian of destiny, marked by the goddesses, as they tell in the legends. link often laughs it off, but feels uneasy when looking at the mark too long.
an orphan, his father mysteriously vanished while his mother was pregnant with him, and she died when he was a toddler. his only memory of her is a small, child-sized ocarina she had whittled from wood for him. he lived in foster care until he was sixteen, when he became employed at lon lon ranch, and talon, so charmed by this hard-working young lad, added on a small addition to the stable for link to occupy when hearing the boy was struggling at his latest foster home.
it isn’t official, but talon does regard link as an adoptive son, and treats him as such. malon has a huge crush on him, and link has unwittingly secured both a future wife and an approving father-in-law.
natural aptitude with animals, and magical beings. magical creatures like fairies are no longer commonly seen in hyrule (already so scarce as it was back in the day) but somehow, they are still drawn to link. this has earned him the nickname ‘fairy boy’ by malon, which feels strangely as familiar as his own name.

i see the much accepted (and understandably so) fanon of link riding a motorcycle in modern aus and i raise to u: a link who never got his license bcuz cars scare the shit out of him and instead u will see him riding a whole ass horse into town. the year is 2022 and u look over and see a young man on a blood red mare and the locals immediately go ‘oh its link back in town for groceries again’.

to be expanded on when im not on the verge of sleepy times, but link was not buried in his armor, he died in it. his final moments were spent retreating into the labyrinth of the lost woods, fatally wounded in a brief lapse of the peace in hyrule that endures up until twilight princess.
specifically, it was the very event that would see the gerudo erased from that timeline, their desert made a true wasteland, and leave link caught in the crossfire of the land he was sworn to protect, and the obvious injustice occurring because of the king’s paranoia over one man.
the irony of returning to the place that had given him a chance at life in order to die away from the chaos did not escape him, and his final thoughts were ones bitter and spiteful, and furious. furious that the peace he had suffered for had been lost, and furious it was because of the hateful paranoia stewing in the heart of who should have been a righteous king. these emotions would leave his soul trapped on the mortal plane, incapable of departing for the heavens that awaited him when knowing there was still so much to be done for hyrule, so many wrongs to be righted, and a new generation to be selected to truly bring light back to the land that had fallen so deep into darkness all on its own.

to avoid spamming the dash, here is a list of my wait a second moments in my oot replay
how is that lon lon ranch is known for its milk, but has mostly horses?? after counting, there are a total of seven horses (not including baby epona), and four cows. two cows with the horses in their barn, and two cows out in another barn. how is talon managing to produce enough milk to sell not only in castle town, but also to the king??? i inevitably plan on reworking this into the ranch being way bigger than seen in game and balancing between selling milk and producing pedigree horses but like, questions. i have played this game since i essentially popped out the womb and yet i am only now considering the insanity of this. are they selling horse milk
obsessed with darunia’s ‘well u played a funny song that made me dance, sure i’ll let u, an eleven yr old, waltz on off to ur death, godspeed little buddy!’
everyone’s casual acknowledgment that link is from the forest?? the kokiri repeatedly insist on how they will die if they leave the forest, and yet, the people of hyrule regard it with the same novelty as seeing someone from out of country. also i cannot fathom the crippling anxiety link must have felt, not realizing he is a hylian, as he stepped foot out of the forest, thinking he may die instantaneously the moment his boot touches the grass of hyrule field.
why is it in these games there is never a single adult who pauses to consider ‘maybe putting our lives in the hands of a very small child who has never stepped outside the woods before isn’t such a swell idea’

pending additional verses when i have the brain power:
modern au (set in a modern day hyrule, ft. a college-aged link working as farmhand, with opportunity for traveling elsewhere)
genshin impact au (i guess mondstadt?? would be the closest thing to hyrule?? a rare dendro vision user, to tie to his forest roots (pun not intended), who swaps between a sword (master’s sword) and claymore (biggoron’s sword) as a knight/sword for hire)
generic fantasy au (traveling sword-for-hire link, usually with some unwanted tether to a destiny preordained by the gods)
more tba
