Writing ship-able couples

Here are some tips for writing relationships your readers can get behind:

1. Give them reasons to click

The two characters must have things in common - a hobby, a philosophy, a background. There has to be some element that connects them.

Your readers will root for relationships in which the characters fit together better than they would with others.

Also, make their traits compatible. Have them share some characteristics or have their strengths and weaknesses be complementary. Is the one hotheaded? Maybe the other keeps their cool well in situations of conflict.

There are endless possibilities. Just make sure there’s a reason these two people like/love each other.

2. Have them be vulnerable in front of each other

Personally, this is the best way to get me to love a couple.

Have them share secrets, open up about their feelings and tell each other things they haven’t told anyone. Have them cry in front of each other and comfort each other.

This can be taken to a whole new level by having them understand the other’s emotions even without speaking and already offer comfort. Keep in mind that this will probably only be possible with long-established couples.

And having them open up is also a great way for them to discover all the things they have in common/love about each other.

3. Build up the tension

I cannot emphasise this enough: DO NOT MAKE YOUR COUPLES GET TOGETHER TOO QUICKLY.

One of the best elements of a romantic subplot (or even main plot) is the tension. Your readers want to see the pining! They want the build-up.

And no, I’m not saying that you should introduce endless, petty obstacles. That can become tedious and appear forced.

Just give your characters time to sort through their feelings. Make them fall in love slowly. Have them be unsure. Insert SOME obstacles/conflicts.

Have them almost kiss a few times. Not all the time. Too many almost-kisses can become frustrating. But you should throw a few in there.

And, if you feel comfortable with it, add some sexual tension. Have them notice each other’s bodies and imagine what they’d like to do to each other (that sounds more explicit than I intended :) )

4. Write a healthy relationship

This could just be me and my rejection of unhealthy romances, but I will not root for abusive relationships.

Have your characters be kind to each other, support each other and truly care for each other.

If your characters are constantly putting each other down, physically/emotionally abusing each other or going against the other’s wishes, they’re not in a healthy relationship.

A great way to write a healthy relationship whilst still maintaining the tension, is to have the conflict in the relationship be external. Instead of having the conflict be due to internal struggles between the two characters, have obstacles enter from outside.

Your readers should want them to be together and for that, they should be good for each other.

5. Have their friends/family see their chemistry

I find it beyond adorable when two characters are still figuring out their feelings for each other, but the fact that they’re perfect for each other is crystal clear to everyone around them.

Have their friends tease them about the relationship. Have family members ask after the them. Have their loved ones conspire to get them to admit their feelings.

If your other characters are rooting for them, your readers will probably do so as well.

Plus, this means that the chemistry between the two characters is so strong that it’s obvious, which is always good for an exciting romance.

Then, after sparking a friendship between himself and another student—who turns out to be the crown princess of Hetriodel, the First Order—he returns to Gladiodel, and upon seeing their new friendship, Hetriodel's queen Atunisa proposed an alliance on one condition: that Marco and Sofia would stay just friends. Of course, still dating Hitell, Marco quickly agreed that that wouldn't be a problem, and while Sofia agrees, it seems that her reason isn't too different.

hey everyone! merry christmas to those who celebrate any happy holidays to those who don't. today, instead of doing a wip intro, i thought i'd introduce someone vital to the storyline who isn't really in the story all that much, but is important nonetheless. spoilers for to kill for pain and the legacy of the last knight in here + picture creds at the end ! take care! <3, Bat

ɢʟᴏssᴀʀʏ Starlord—magician Minor realm—small kingdom Major realm/order—one of the four most powerful kingdoms The Realms—the dimension this story takes place in ɪᴍᴘᴏʀᴛᴀɴᴛ ɪɴғᴏʀᴍᴀᴛɪᴏɴ -> magicians have multiple lives -> they can see life forces, and the more kind/selfless/empathetic you are, the bigger your life force is -> magicians have bigger life forces than regular people, equal to the life forces of multiple people, which is how they have multiple lives. The more times they die, the smaller their life force gets until they're on their last life. -> the more powerful the magician, the easier it is for them to see life forces

ᴛʜᴇ sᴇᴄᴏɴᴅᴀʀʏ ʜᴇʀᴏ—ʜᴇʀɪɴ ᴀʟɪᴀ In To Kill For Pain, Marco has to find and retrieve his sword from his old house. When he gets there, there are three starlords guarding it, the three that he has to kill to get to his sword. One of those three is Herin Alia, the leader of the small group, is the best-known starlord in the Realms after Ratchlen the Great. Even though he wasn't supposed to help—this was common knowledge to everyone, so even Marco knew it—Herin did, as he knew that Ratchlen was after Marco. Instead of simply telling Marco what he needed to do to get his sword, Herin gave him a healing potion (a big no, considering that was definitely a major help) and warned him that he would need to fight hard to survive. He didn't directly tell him that he was being hunted, but still, the advice came in handy. Another reason Herin is the second hero: if it weren't for him, Marco never would've become the Knight of the Fourth Order in the first place. While he has a portal right next to his new home, it's deactivated, meaning someone would have to go through from the Realms side first. The only other portal was in Marco's old house, and if it weren't for Herin casting a protection spell over the portal for that specific reason, Marco wouldn't have been able to get to Gladiodel, and he wouldn't have been able to kill Ratchlen. Herin only appears at the beginning of the story, as he's killed (temporarily) at the beginning, so here's some history on him:

he's from the minor realm of Icarani, which is known for its scholars

He's a young magician (unlike Ratchlen), having been recognized as a talented magician since he was young

He was the one who formed the group Marco ran into, finding people based on power but mainly on how good of a person they were. ⤷ Doven Bureau (Hetriodel) ⤷ Vadu Himotalia (Miscoronal)

Second heroes are typically members of a story that aren't just vital to the story, they're another main character or another hero of the story. This means that they are a large part of the soloution to the problem the hero is trying to fix, so typically wouldn't show up in a story where the hero is the hero because they're the only one who can fix said problem.

Herin is a second hero because if it weren't for him, Marco would've died. Hitell would've died. Helen and Bixy (characters that come in later in the story) never would've found the Realms. Most importantly, without Herin, Ratchlen never would've died.

sᴜᴍᴍᴀʀʏ: Even though he's proved to the king of Gladiodel and his people that he's worthy of being his father's replacement as Knight of the Fourth Order, Marco Krieger's work is far from done. Now, he has to go on another quest just to get his sword. As he searches for his sword, he finds something else out: Ratchlen the Great, one of—if not the—worst of the Realms' Starlords, is determined to keep it from him. He's hesitant enough as it is to leave Gladiodel and set out on his own again blindly, a task only made more difficult when he realizes that his boyfriend is trying to buy him some more time.

sᴜᴍᴍᴀʀʏ: Two years ago, Marco Krieger's father was killed in a work-related construction accident. Now, after their old house was mysteriously destroyed soon after his dad's death, he's living three hours away with his mom and his grandma in the house his dad grew up. One day, after mustering up the courage to go visit his old house again, it doesn't go quite to plan. Marco finds himself in the kingdom of Gladiodel, in the Realms dimension, which he somehow entered through a portal in his old house. He's confused, but everybody here seems to know who he is. And, worse yet, he's important. Between learning the truth of his father's death and the skills everyone in Gladiodel seem to expect him to have, Marco's wondering if he should've come here after all.... Or, he would think that, if it wasn't for the kingdom's young prince.

Something that is actually... quite random

Today, I was doing some writing specifically for things about Deneeos, Viktor, Evie, and William when I was talking about the fear they strike in their enemies, like the Riders. Before we proceed, let me say this: the definition of insanity means doing the same thing over and over and thinking that the outcome will change. When they're adults, it's shown that the Riders are constantly trying to defeat Viktor and Deneeos, steal the Orb Thingy™️, despite it never working. I accidentally wrote my story depicting their family slowly driving all their enemies insane. It's actually shown at the beginning of the beginning of the end (the section with Delius and the Wonderbeasts and my other story Oversight that is the end of the Warriors of Aregon story) that, while Delius agrees to go with Deneeos and Viktor, he's confused at first and unsure once he gets inside. Deneeos locks him in his room every night because he doesn't trust him, and--maybe--this is because he knows what he's done and is worried of more than Delius hurting William should he get out (though of course, he does, since Evie finds a key and unlocks the door for him). There are actually multiple reasons that this makes sense, though, and a lot of them have to do with Viktor. By many people--both people who know him but especially people who do--describe Viktor as terrifying or threatening, and not because of his appearance, but because they know that he will kill for those he loves, and if you're not on the list of people he loves, you could be next. In one part where Deneeos almost dies, his aunt Delaney says that she tried to stay away from Viktor but not be obvious about it because of this very fact. Viktor was so angry about Deneeos getting hurt that she knew he was ready--and willing--to kill anyone who did anything minorly wrong. So maybe it's understandable why all the people fighting them have lost the ability to see sense.
