Montgomery: I’m a slave to my nostalgia for the original where the colors were all wonkadoo and wrong colors in the wrong lions. But that’s just kind of what I remember from being a kid, and more so than Keith being in the Black Lion, I remember Keith wearing red. He was the red guy. He always wore red, and so when I would see people kind of change things up for the comics or for other Voltron shows, they would usually change the outfits, and Keith would be wearing black, Lance would be wearing red, and Allura would be wearing blue, and that just weirded me out. I was like, “No, no, no, that’s not the right character! You’re all wrong!” So it was my ask to like, “Can we please have them just start in the lion that correlates with the color, and then when they ultimately evolve and they move up it’ll make sense why?” They’re kind of like [how] Michael Jordan keeps his number and nobody else can wear 23.
oh great, so the lion switches are permanent.
lance, the beach boy, is never getting back in the lion that’s designed for underwater combat. the lion who chose him. the lion whom he bonded with. the lion whom he centered his identity around (”mrs. blue lion”).
blue isn’t my friend anymore because of her behavior in season 2, but still. i’d been hoping for a redemption scene in which she saves his ass or something. but nope!!! he’s “moved up” and “evolved” so nah.
instead, he’ll be piloting red!!
now, what part of red’s description fits lance’s character development?
is it the “audacious” part? no, lance isn’t a risk-taker, and that’s okay. is it the “fiery temper” part? not unless you count him blowing up at keith in s1. is it the “carving out their own path” part? i don’t even know what exactly they mean by that. is it the “fastest of all lions” part? as if lance needs that more than armor. is it the “never afraid to push its limits in order to defend the team” part? sure, sure. but that leaves us with 2/5 of the traits maybe, but those 2 traits are pretty vague and could apply to a lot of people.
so basically what they’re saying is that, in order to “evolve” and “move up”, lance needs to pilot a lion who is literally not designed for him.
no, it doesn’t make sense at all.
don’t make lance keith’s impulse control if you want it to “make sense” that he gets stuck with the most impulsive lion who looks for those traits in her paladin.
they wrote lance this way, so why are they framing him being stuck with a lion who simply doesn’t fit him as some kind of growth?
they wrote season 2 with a heavy emphasis on lion bonds. “growth” doesn’t mean you ditch one person and “move up” to the next. if these lions are sentient and care about their pilots (red in particular), then why would they want to change paladins just because…they’re changing a bit? so they have zero loyalty to speak of, basically? if lance is growing, he can’t be blue’s cub anymore? that’s how it works now?
the character interactions in season 3 were great, but what the hell is this nonsense?
