paul’s anger does not stem from him being a shapeshifter. it has very little to do with it, actually. he was diagnosed with intermittent explosive disorder ( ied ) when he was just nine years old, and it’s been something he’s struggled with for many years. with the help of medication, he was able to meet a point in his life where he could focus and get through his days. a teacher that worked in the reservation’s school helped and coached him where possible, allowing him a place to talk and giving him a safe place to work out his issues if need be while others just chalked him up to being a problem kid.

when paul first phased and he learned about the supernatural side of life and what his abilities as a wolf would be, he made the decision to go off his medication. over time, he began to struggle with controlling his temper, and while being a wolf did not cause his anger, it did little to quench it. the constant threat of vampires, the tear in the pack’s solidarity and the permanent invasion of privacy often left him with very little room to breathe. however, he makes a conscious decision to go back on his medication in the gap between eclipse and breaking dawn, while everything is mostly calm and he’s able to find the time to figure out what he wants to do and who he wants to be as an individual, and getting himself to a point where he has everything under control takes main priority while he does.
