BLOGTOBER 10/3/2019: KILLER CONDOM
I’ll never forget the first time I saw this movie. The german oddity arrived in my home town just as my friends and I had become old enough for midnight movies. It seemed like a laff riot, but with a vaguely threatening air. Its potential for transgression was emphasized by its distribution by Troma, and Troma fare, with its shallow bad-on-purpose edginess, was usually where we drew the line. Suspense built as the lights went down and this broad slapstick comedy opened on an uncomfortable scene of a weepy teenager being blackmailed and nearly raped by her slavering teacher. Luckily for everyone, the would-be assailant has witlessly chosen the Hotel Quickie for his crime scene, a seedy fleabag that has recently become infested with prick-munching prophylactics, and their tension-relieving reign of terror is about to begin. Honestly, genital mutilation has never been so much fun!

KILLER CONDOM follows the lonely tale of Luigi Mackeroni, a hardboiled NYC detective who finds himself in a one-man war against an invasion of mysterious man-eating rubbers when one of them makes off with his right testicle. Now, he must juggle a disastrous past with ex-badge Bob/Babette, a hopeful future with hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold Billy, and the responsibility that comes with being the only cop who believes in the predatory condoms. Co-adapted by prominent gay comics artist Ralf Konig from his original work, this movie is surprisingly warm, funny, and even moving, for a picture full of chopped off dicks. KILLER CONDOM is kinetic and stylish, thanks in part to special effects by Jorg Buttgereit and creative consultant H.R. Giger, but the most effective piece here is really the human element. Director Martin Walz derives a perfect blend of humor and pathos from his cast, mainly from the wonderful Bob Hoskins lookalike Udo Samel (whose presence underlines the movie’s odd spiritual similarity to WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT), but also from Leonard Lansink as Bob aka Babette.

The latter character has an unpleasant whiff of transphobia about him now–a beefy drag queen whose clumsy genderbending is characterized as purely hysterical–but Lansink’s sincere and energetic performance helps promote Bob/Babette not as a glib attack on trans-ness, but as, uniquely, a gay male character in the grips of an identity crisis brought on by a drunken encounter with Mackeroni’s legendarily huge and talented schlong. I’m certainly not the arbiter of what is and isn’t appropriate in our collective conversations around trans identity, but if I’m being honest, it’s hard for me to see the nuanced character of Babette as a cruel and generalizing satire of an entire category of human being, especially not in light of the movie’s ultimate message. The lab-grown condoms happen to be the result of a political conspiracy that began as homosexual holocaust, but grew into a religiously-motivated assault on sinners everywhere. Mackeroni’s quelling of this AIDS-like crisis, along with his triumphant monologue about tolerance, reflect a real and relatable longing for social justice that is only slightly diluted by the film’s zany humor.
Tumblr media
All in all, KILLER CONDOM is disarmingly romantic and earnest, treating its characters with compassion and affection, and providing the audience with a satisfying fantasy of rebellion against the arcane conservative forces that aim to rub so much of humanity out. Frankly, I think it’s a crime that this unusual comedy is so poorly circulated, and it would be great if today’s trying times were to provoke a reemergence of this raunchy little gem.

vampirism poses the question "what if there was a fundamental, horrible, unending well of want in your soul that, if truly satisfied, would lead to great pain for all those you hold closest and, in turn, their absolute and total revilement of you?" and naturally as a person with no problems I don't relate to this in any way at all.
