in pmmm rebellion within the first 20 minutes, right after madoka first meets homura, there's a month timeskip, and always struck me as kinda odd. it felt like there was no real reason for the timeskip to specifically be a month, a few days or a week would've made much more sense to me. but i realized something in this watch through that i feel kinda silly for not realizing before, this is a labyrinth hiding behind an ideal world to homura, and in this labyrinth the one month that homura had been repeating, over and over, flashed by, it was over so quickly, it inconsequential, and they were able to live past it. it's such a short moment and such a small detail but now that i've noticed i cannot stop thinking about it

taking the idea a step further, the illusion only begins to fall apart after that first month, homura doesn't know what happens next, homura knows that one month so well, but after that month? homura doesn't have anything after that month, her past 10 years have been spent getting to that point, that month is all homura knows, homura has never let herself imagine a world past that month and so when she tries to, when she's forced to, the dream all goes up in flames. literally

SORRY FOR THE LACK OF WORK RECENTLY, I’ve been drowning in work for a few secret projects but I always have time for madoka magica fanart

Something that I love about Madoka Magica is how much extra lore that there is from the drama cds, spinoffs, the portable game, and interviews.

Some of these things include:

- Homura was nearing 100 loops, which iirc adds up to around 12 years of looping.

- Mami and Kyoko were once close friends before the show (they even considered each other family).

- Sayaka is destined to die in any timeline where she makes a contract. She wouldn’t be content even if Kyosuke chose her.

- Madoka’s original wish was to save that black cat that appears in the OP.

- Kyoko and Mami have witch forms — Mami’s represents her fear of being alone (the familiars literally look like Kyoko and Madoka), while Kyoko’s takes inspiration from Ophelia of Hamlet. Could make a post on this alone.

- Hitomi blames herself for Sayaka’s death in the final timeline, and tries to get an answer about what happened out of Kyoko.

- Kyoko cannot swim, which goes pretty well with Sayaka’s water and siren imagery. Also, Ophelia drowned.

madoka magica is just

youve watched your best friend die. and you try to save her, but she doesnt remember you and she dies again. so you try again and again and you watch her die in horrible, horrible ways, and you love her more every time and she never remembers and she always dies and you always fail. hell, this is actual hell, youve gone through hell over and over and you realize after a decade youve been dragging your only reason and your only love and your only hope and youre only saving grace through hell with you but you cant stop because the second you stop shes going to realize shes in hell too, your only hope is you can find her a way out. youve been trying to save her and youve doomed her to a fate worse than just death, because now shes not just going to die. shes not going to become a regular witch, kill a few people, and then be harvested. your true love is going to become so horrible and monstrous that she will destroy the world, and its your fault. and you cannot stop trying to save her. you have been fourteen years old for a decade and you cannot stop.

and then she realizes who you are. what youve done. what youve made her. and she apologizes - she apologizes to you - and she destroys herself.

oh, she saves the world doing it, saves countless girls throughout the past and future from agony and gives them peaceful deaths, but she destroys herself. she tells you she will always be there with you, but no one but you remembers her. you are always burdened with memory and years that never existed and all you have are ribbons and conviction and the knowledge that you did this. you loved her so much that you destroyed her.
