Hopper is a goofy, angry sitcom dad. Steve is off, but Joe Keery is charming enough to pull it off. Joyce and Mike are barely concerned with Will this season, despite how central he was to their characterization in S1 and S2. None of the boys want to play dnd, which is just weird in hindsight considering S4 (they really did say fuck dnd until Will left, which is unintentionally funny as hell but also really sad). And Karen is still here and I still don't care

Honestly? My main piece of advice for writing well-rounded characters is to make them a little bit lame. No real living person is 100% cool and suave 100% of the time. Everyone's a little awkward sometimes, or gets too excited about something goofy, or has a silly fear, or laughs about stupid things. Being a bit of a loser is an incurable part of the human condition. Utilize that in your writing.

running list of good vs bad aspects of S3 from off the top of my head

Good:

the vibes. a summer aesthetic is amazing and I wish they had done something that called back to summer horror flicks

the running gag of people thinking Susie is fake, and the payoff at the end

the kids interacting

the cinematography and horror aspects were pretty good

Bad:

whatever the hell they did to Hopper

a song break??? in the middle of the climax???

all of the couples being at each others throats the entire time

the mall plot

Steve losing all braincells and not only deciding to go along with Dustin's stupid and dangerous plan, but bringing in Robin and Erica as well

Robin and Erica were meh additions to the story to me, but I get why other people like them

Will getting half of a character arc about feeling stuck in the past and like everyone else is growing up without him only for it to be abandoned midway because the plot had to happen instead

Karen Wheeler is still here being irrelevant

the season's feminism (tm) which felt incredibly plastic and unnatural and really showed that there's maybe 1-2 women on the writing team at best

reusing the Mind Flayer made it less scary as an antagonist. making it a meat puppet was gross, but not in a way that made it more intimidating
