Back to work on Monday after 2 weeks off, i don't want to go back. However, the bills won't pay themselves. Luckily, I'm going on a night out tomorrow to drown my sorrows.

Osferth

With everyone seemingly focusing on House of the Dragon, does anyone still go back and watch episodes of The Last Kingdom? I do, I find it nostalgic going back and watching Ewan in one of first roles, definitely his first major role. He was so good in that role, well acted, well presented, overall Ewan did an astounding job.

I obviously started watching it from the beginning and Osferth didn’t appear until Season 2 Episode 6, I wanted to say how Osferth was such an impact on screen. Even his first scene when he approaches Uhtred and Co, he wants to change, to be a stronger, better person even when he’s mocked, revealed as Alfred’s bastard and when given the nickname ‘Baby Monk’ shows strength, not wanting to give up and his persistence is portrayed brilliantly Ewan.

The following quote from Episode 8 really started off Osferth’s character development for a lot of people:

            “Lord can I say to you that I’m afraid? I wear a sword but barely know how to use it. I pray when battle comes, I will not fail you.”

Admitting that he is afraid to someone like Uhtred resonates with me because Osferth, knowing that he isn’t very good, wholeheartedly wants to be.

            “Osferth, at times we’re all afraid. Courage in finding the will to overcome your fear, nothing more.”

This response gave Osferth a fighting chance, this gave him hope and this can be seen through the way you are portraying him throughout this scene, Ewan put us in Osferth’s shoes and make the majority of people feel what Osferth is feeling. Especially when Osferth watches in fear as his comrades go to war. When he notices a weakened Dane in front of him, he manages to kill him which for me was brave because he was afraid still. When Uhtred scolds him for claiming the kill that was not his to make, and telling him to either find his courage or go back to the monastery, is what Osferth needed. A kick to the backside, he had a minor breakdown and cried but I believe it gave him the courage his sought and enabled him to start the journey of becoming the warrior he not only wanted to be but was destined to be.

I for one will never forget Ewan's portrayal as Osferth. One of the reasons why I won't watch beyond one particular episode in Season 5 is because if I miss that episode and go back to the beginning, Osferth will remain forever on the show.
