this man and his smooth talking, amara thinks; unable to hide the smile from her face. “i know — i know. it’s just a little weird for me, i’m not used to people looking at me. don’t worry, you’ll make a great impression. everyone will love you.” how could they not? with his looks and personality he was meant to capture everyone’s heart. hopefully, he knew better than break hers. they could only wait, see and hope for the best. “of course. you know there’s not a thing i wouldn’t do for you..” crazy, stupid love. for someone who wasn’t exactly a fighter, amara wasn’t planning to give him up that easily. “– and don’t forget to actually help when we prepare dinner. peel the potatoes like i showed you and you’ll be fine. you got this.”

a traditional korean family struggles to make ends meet in the late 70s, and the american dream becomes an enticing concept. the united states is a land of opportunities, isn't it ? and so, they pursue employment there.
but attaining the american dream isn’t as easy as it sounded, and after three children are born, putting food on the table and paying bills on time prove to be challenging for the shin family.
klaus witnesses that struggle first hand; bullies make fun of his off-brand walmart shoes, frozen dinners eaten alone while parents work and even power cut-offs for being late on electric bills.
at fifteen he gets a job mowing the lawn in the north side of chicago. and his first experience in a rich neighborhood sets him in a new path, one that shapes him into what he is today.
