What do you think the current relationship between Hajime and Miyuki is in the 37 Kindaichi series?, Are they friends, lovers? Does Kindaichi still like her?
Tumblr media
I'm answering these together!
I've talked about Miyuki's return before - in short, she should have major roles in the series, or at least hold some kind of key to the "Why Kindaichi Doesn't Solve Cases Anymore" mystery, but we don't know anything yet. I'm also very curious about where the series is going now that the old cast have mostly returned 👀
As for Miyuki and Kindaichi's relationship, I think "more than friends, less than lovers" is a perfect saying for them lol. I'm pretty sure they still love each other and I honestly don't know why they aren't married or at least dating yet except for the old "will they won't they" routine haha. If they do marry I think it will be at the very end of the Kindaichi series though, but seeing how the authors took the risk by writing Kindaichi 20 years later, an even more mature series where Kindaichi has married and retired from his job might not be off the table.
...if it turns out the reason they aren't married yet is tied to the plot that might be interesting too... But I'm a bit scared by the possibilities lol

Where did you read the young kindaichi's trip of death murderness
Almost the whole series is published in bookstores here (Indonesia). Although you need to wait a few months after the volume is released in Japan, the official Indonesian translation is pretty up to date (they're currently publishing Kindaichi 37 and re-publishing the older series). It's actually easier for me to get a Kindaichi book in Indonesian than in English or Japanese.
For Kindaichi Death Trip of Preparedness in particular, if you can read Indonesian, you can try searching for the last two books of the very old Case series in used bookstores (the version I read), or get the new, re-released version (Detektif Kindaichi Premium volume 26 - Pertaruhan Nyawa Kindaichi). I don't know if any English translation of that series exists.
I think the only Kindaichi series not officially released here is the Akechi Shounen no Jikenbou (the old series, not the new The Akechi Files) and Takatoo Shounen no Jikenbou... At least I've never seen them in bookstores or used bookstores.

KIND OF A SPOILER BECAUSE I saw the raws!
What do you think of Miyuki's recent appearance in Kindaichi 37 year old case files?
I saw this ask so I had to get the raw lol.
Spoiler below... Well not really a spoiler but just in case.
Miyuki did appear in the newest volume, but aside from talking about wanting to meet Reika and how not solving cases doesn't suit Kindaichi, there was not much info there. I kinda expected her to appear in the middle of a case to help Kindaichi (or get dragged into one instead), but here she just casually appeared lol. There's a new case but she doesn't seem to play a role there so at this point I don't really have anything to say. Fingers crossed she'll have a major role soon.
On a related note, Kindaichi 37 was on hiatus for a while (I think the authors worked on the 30th Anniversary series first before continuing 37). I haven't read the 30th Anniversary series, but Kindaichi is wearing his school uniform in the covers and there's a panel of Takatoo in one of the snippets, which makes me kinda more interested in that at least until something big is happening in 37. I'll probably write something if/when the 30th Anniversary series is released here 👀

New information arriiiiiiived.
Okay, I'm fairly excited about this!
So apparently we get to meet another new character (yay!)... which would probably give us an interesting dynamic with Kindaichi. And Akechi. Seriously that Yukimura guy is so funny that I laughed along with Akechi. I mean this is not the first time Kindaichi is accused to be the killer/mastermind himself but saying that with such a serious face... I will probably love this character lol.
Also, the next arc would probably be staged by Takatoo wouldn't it? I'm fairly confident we will meet another one of Takatoo's God/Goddess... And, just like the Utajima 4th murder, it's a very memorable case for Kindaichi where Takatoo didn't participate in it. It's too early to say that it's a pattern but if it's true it could lead to some interesting development. Even if it's not, it still provides a nice call back to the original series so I'm fine with either way. That leads to...
Crack theory time!
Assuming it is indeed a pattern (memorable cases for Kindaichi where Takatoo didn't participate in), other than Utajima and Hotel Europea Case then I could probably predict some cases that could be revisited by other God/Goddesses - spoilers abound, of course!
Lake Hiren Case: this was one of the most fucked up case in Kindaichi history imo, and I was kinda annoyed it ended with the culprit escaping justice, but I think this one is pretty memorable since it was the first time Kindaichi met Itsuki and... By the virtue of how things unfolded... Makes it memorable enough.
Snow Yaksha Case: the case itself isn't as memorable as Lake Hiren imo but it was the first time Akechi appeared, so the case might be revisited.
Kindaichi the Killer Case: if I were Takatoo there's no way I would miss this one. Pretty self-explanatory.
Seven Mysteries Case: one of the earliest cases, and it takes place in the school. Not to mention the very first case in the anime. Memorable enough.
Castle of Wax Case: well, it's set in German castle, with perfect crime as its theme, as well as being an important case for Akechi... It would probably revisited.
Tarot Hut Case: one of the most important cases for Reika. Memorable enough.
Yukikage Village Case: one of the cases that greatly affect Kindaichi. Maybe it would be revisited.
Gentleman Thief Case: she's a recurring character so...
Idk about the rest, maybe Black Butterfly? French Coin? Headless Samurai? I probably need to reread the series again...
Since the God/Goddess arcs are going to be 11-12 cases long (doesn't necessarily mean 11-12 chapters or volumes long) there are probably other memorable cases that would be revisited (or they can always create a brand new case, of course), but it's still exciting to think about the future plot. Also, backstory. You gotta give us some sort of explanation/flashback regarding the 20 years gap. And Takatoo's father. And Miyuki!! In short there are still so many things unresolved and I want more information and answers. The Adult series isn't ending anytime soon.
Until next time.
Amidst the chaos called Tumblr...
Hey. Hello. Long time no see haha. I know tumblr is currently in state of literal chaos (like it isn’t already), but 37 year old Kindaichi has just released in English and it confirmed some things that I need. To. Rant about it.
So… Yeah. I’ve been mostly right about Takatoo being arrested, and I was sort of right about him being involved with the 4th Opera House murder (though I predicted the reason wrong). I can’t say I’m surprised, but I’m surprised (lol). It went too smoothly as I predicted and I expected more twist haha.
Anyway. Glad to see Takatoo again! Man I missed him so much. He’s too good of a character to die off screen so I was even more certain of him returning compared to other regulars like Reika and Ikutsuki. But what’s with that hair Takatoo you’re several years younger than Akechi, why are you the one with completely white hair (lmao). Though I guess it’s not that fair since Akechi already has silvery hair since the beginning but. You got my point. Other than that, he’s still the same Takatoo as we know and love, so I’m still happy about this development.
Also did anybody notice Akechi calling Takatoo with “-kun” and being generally friendly (or at least, civil) with him? I need to read the raw again to confirm it but compared to how fiery Kenmochi is and how upset Kindaichi is, Akechi’s conversation with Takatoo almost feels like a conversation between old friends. Which they in a sense are, but you probably wouldn’t want to have an old friend like that in real life. Takatoo even congratulates him for his promotion! Not gonna lie, I like this, but it still Feels Strange, haha.
Moving on… (God this will be really, really long.)
In the light of the newest chapter, there are several points I’d like to address, namely:
Takatoo’s sentence and possibilities surrounding that,
12 Olympian Deities and their roles in the new series,
Some new speculations on Kindaichi’s hesitation in solving cases again, and
The return of old casts and the introduction of new major cast.

Moving on... (God this will be really, really long.)
In the light of the newest chapter, there are several points I'd like to address, namely:
Takatoo's sentence and possibilities surrounding that,
12 Olympian Deities and their roles in the new series,
Some new speculations on Kindaichi's hesitation in solving cases again, and
The return of old casts and the introduction of new major cast.
Takatoo's sentence and possibilities surrounding that
Man, when I said I expected him to be arrested, I shouldn’t have been surprised when he’s sentenced to death. Really, I shouldn’t have. But I was still surprised, despite the limited choice of what would become of Takatoo once he was put on trial. He was reading Monte Cristo tho. Last time someone from Detective School Q read that, they escaped from prison not long after. I bet Takatoo will, or at least will attempt to, escape from jail. Especially since the Amagi-sensei seems to be fond of his villains to escape from prison a la Silence of the Lamb. Though, I guess with Takatoo’s track record, escaping prison for the 4th time would bring the old question of “whatever the police is doing?”.
So far, I only have two theories regarding how Takatoo’s arrest will play a role in future plot, which are:
Takatoo will escape, haunts Kindaichi by inviting him to cases like he did in the past, before Kindaichi arrests him again once and for all (probably in the climax), and
Takatoo will not escape, but he will still play a role in controlling the other 11 deities, and nevertheless haunts Kindaichi again like he did in the past. There’s no way he will play nice even after all this time.
Since I believe Takatoo will be the current series Final Boss (more on that on my next point), I think there’s a chance that the series will end with Takatoo’s death, whether from the execution or through any other means. Though it would mean no more Takatoo after 37 Year Old, which kinda makes this theory less plausible (he’s one of the major villain in the entire series - killing him off will be a real waste, and since he’s somewhat popular in the fandom as well, it would probably make some fans upset). If not, he’s probably going to disappear, like a certain someone from certain other series by this creator... and might or might not return again.
Next, several points surrounding his arrest.
In the flashback with Asou Sanae, we’re shown the Takatoo with black hair, just like he was in the past. Which, I think, was probably when he wasn’t in jail yet, and his age is close to the age when the majority of the story took place (23 year old). This is also consistent with Akechi’s remark about “It’s been 20 years after all” when he, Kenmochi, and Kindaichi finally reunites (as well as Takatoo’s remark about their meeting being really nostalgic), and fits my theory about how Kindaichi cut all ties with law enforcement and the likes when he stopped solving cases (more in point 3!). But Sanae (if her age from chapter 2 can be trusted) is only 27, which means he got to know her since what. 7 year old? That’s not possible. Which means:
Either Sanae lies about her age (and she’s actually almost 40), or
Takatoo’s timeline being inconsistent - which implies he was either arrested NOT 20 years ago, but more recently.
An interesting thing: at the end of the chapter, Kindaichi feels reluctant even after he got a confirmation that Takatoo still murders people left and right even inside prison - but we only get confirmation that Akechi is involved in his arrest, not Kindaichi (please correct me if I'm wrong here!). Takatoo also never mentioned Kindaichi putting him in jail, so even though I'm like. 90% sure Kindaichi's reason of not solving cases anymore is tied to Takatoo in one way or another, I'm not as sure about Kindaichi personally put him behind bars for good (or so everyone hopes). But if Takatoo only goes to jail a few years ago (10 years max is my bet), it could mean Kindaichi’s reason of not solving cases anymore is not related to Takatoo being in jail, and though it doesn’t necessarily shoot my “Kindaichi stop solving cases because of Takatoo” theory, there are several big questions left. When exactly Takatoo was arrested? How? Was Kindaichi involved in his arrest, or was it after he swore not to solve cases again? Was Akechi the one with major role in arresting Takatoo, and in what circumtances? Boy, this series is getting more and more confusing as we get more information, haha.
Also, those points about Takatoo’s being so famous until he has his own fan club? I laughed at that lol
12 Olympian Deities and their roles in the new series
According to Wikipedia, the 12 Olympian Deities are as follow:
Zeus, king of Gods and God of the sky, lightning, thunder, law, order, and justice
Hera, wife of Zeus and Goddess of marriage, women, childbirth, and family
Poseidon, God of the sea, earthquakes, soil, storms, and horses
Demeter, Goddess of agriculture, harvest, fertility and sacred law
Athena, Goddess of wisdom, handicraft, and warfare
Apollo, God of music, poetry, arts, truth and oracles, archery, herds and flocks, diseases, healing, light, sun, knowledge and protection of young
Artemis, Goddess of chastity, the hunt, forests and hills, the moon, and archery
Ares, God of war
Aphrodite, Goddess of love, beauty,
Hephaestus, God of fire, metalworking, stone masonry, forges, the art of sculpture and blacksmiths
Hermes, Messenger of the gods, god of trade, thieves, travelers, sports, athletes, border crossings, guide to the Underworld
Hestia, Goddess of the hearth, home, domesticity, family, and the state or Dionysus, God of the vine, grape-harvest, wine-making, wine, fertility, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, theatre
Okay so. A disclaimer - I don't know anything about Greek Gods, except, you know, from Megaten games. Which is not that much. But given the fact that Asou Sanae was chosen as Artemis, the chastity Goddess, despite her very apparent lack of chastity (geez Takatoo), the names might have a reverse meaning (eg. choosing an unwise person as Athena) or, well. Don't mean anything at all. Like Takatoo would simply talk at the person and say "be my Athena". Though I must say if they do have a meaning and is somehow tied to the mythology, I would be very happy.
Anyway since we have only got Sanae as Artemis so far, I can't really speculate anything, but if there's already enough materials to work from, I probably expand this part to discuss the myth as well. If we take this literally though, there would probably 4 or 5 female servants and 7 or 6 male servants, depending on which one of Hestia or Dionysus the mangakas choose (or both, maybe). Of course, I expect some twists to happen (ie. some of the Gods are represented by women, there are multiple people representing one God, etc.)
Though I have a rather interesting idea out of this. Sanae said that she, Artemis, is Zeus' servant, which means Takatoo is Zeus. But honestly? I don't see Zeus in him (lol), except maybe the part about "ruling other (Gods)", if anything he is closer to Hades... And now I'm having feels over Detective School Q again (everyone who hasn't read it, read it now!). My point is we naturally assume that he's Zeus, but he's probably like. Have 12 servants and him being the 13th one? I don't know. This one is definitely crack. I'm really looking forward to this plot point tho, and I think several of the "servants" would be major characters in this series instead of simply being the suspect in murder case.
Anyway. Regarding these people and The Plot, I guess it’s safe to assume that this series would have at least 11 or 12 major arcs, including Opera House 4th murder, with some filler chapters in between. It doesn’t necessarily mean it would end in just 12 volumes or something (New series, for example, has several single cases told in 2 volumes), and of course, the mangakas can put more objectives in between those arcs, but I think it’s been established that the twelve deities would play a major role in the series’ plot. I think Takatoo will once again take the role of main antagonist of this series, and I believe he would be the Big Bad of this, but anything can happen. I think it’s quite late to introduce new recurring antagonist tho. Fingers crossed.
Some new speculations on Kindaichi's hesitation in solving cases again
According to the newest chapters, we can conclude that at least Kindaichi (and probably Akechi as well) and Takatoo have never met for a very long time. Even Akechi implies that he himself hadn't been in touch with Kindaichi for considerable time when he answered his call, though he was at least keeping tabs on him as he knew that Akechi has been promoted from superintendent (also does it mean Kindaichi has Akechi's number memorized, or at least keeps it with him, since he stated that it was not the police's "usual" channel? Interesting...). Even Kenmochi was surprised by his call - and was weirded out by his sudden formal tone - and he was one of Kindaichi's closest allies back when he was still in high school. This is just my prediction, but I think Kindaichi cut off all contacts with people from law enforcement when, or not long after, he decided not to solve cases anymore. I can see Akechi being Not Amused and make some sarcastic remarks at him (and Kenmochi trying to rope him back into solving cases), but it would take a pretty serious reason(s) for him to not solving cases anymore even when one is unfolding in front of him. At first I could still entertain that he is simply bored, or find solving cases not as interesting as it was, and decided to quit, but this part of the manga makes me highly doubt it:
"Kindaichi-kun... please!"
What is interesting of this sentence is the use of honorific "-kun". There are a lot of people who call Kindaichi with "-kun", but they are mostly people who are older than him or his friends. Only several of the main casts call him this (he’s often just called “Kindaichi” without honorific like how Kenmochi and Itsuki refer to him), and Miyuki isn't one of them - she calls him "Hajime-chan" (even though she was on the top of my 'reasons-why-Kindaichi-doesn't-solve-cases-anymore' list!). AFAIK, Japanese people don’t generally call their family with last name + “-kun” either, and thus removing candidates like Kindaichi’s parents or other family members (Fumi included). Therefore, if this sentence is a flashback that is related to the reason why Kindaichi stopped solving cases and is not something said by some new character, this would probably be spoken by one of these people:
Akechi
Takatoo
Reika
I haven’t checked the raw yet but the tone of the English translation doesn't feel like it's spoken by Akechi and Takatoo (though I do have a theory for him!). For now, my best bet is on Reika, mostly because she calls him with "-kun" and that she hasn't appeared in the series yet, but I'm going to wait for more hints before I can speculate anything beyond this. It can, of course, belong to a completely new character or said by some unexpected person, so yeah.
Special mention goes for Takatoo though. This line was said after Takatoo's usual "we are parallel lines" speech, and Kindaichi was visibly shaken before thinking of that line. Since the manga isn't voiced yet, we don't know if the speaker is a man or a woman, and looking at the context, we can be sure that it's related to Takatoo one way or another. Thus it raises a possibility - could it be Takatoo who said that? Personally I don't think it's him, but hey, who knows. That man has created problems for as long as I can remember, I wouldn't surprised if he tried to fool Kindaichi or something by first begging him to do something.
Anyway, my top 4 reasons why Kindaichi doesn't solve cases again are still as follow:
He and/or his loved one(s) was(were) hurt/murdered/targeted/put in danger because he solved/was solving case(s) and he feel responsible for it (eg. revenge because the culprit was put in jail/exposed, the culprit felt threatened in the middle of the case, etc.). My first thought is Miyuki, especially since her appearance is only teased so far, but it can very well be any other characters (or even new character(s)).
Takatoo and/or his father caused some problems that really upset Kindaichi during 20 year gap. Can overlap with the first one. I think this reason is also very likely, especially after Takatoo's reappearance.
He "fails" at something. Be it a case he couldn't solve, made a mistake in solving (thus, for example, putting innocent person in jail), or unintentionally made someone died/hurt. Can also overlap with the first and/or second one. I think this is a very interesting scenario, and if it's right, I'm genuinely curious on where it will go (I think there’s also a mention of Kindaichi Kousuke’s famous case in one of the chapter as well? I’m not familiar with the novels so I can’t say anything about its relation with Kindaichi’s reason not to solve cases anymore, but if it is indeed related, it would be really interesting).
Kindaichi is simply tired or bored at solving cases and wished to quit. This is, I think, is the least likely of all.
With the new chapter, honestly I think we can dismiss the fourth one. I don't think him being tired and stop solving cases needs this much build up. Whatever it is though, I hope it would be something really interesting (and I don't mind some twist! Haha).
The return of old casts and the introduction of new major casts
So we've got Hayama, which sort of took Miyuki's role as Kindaichi's assistant, and the old casts like Kenmochi and Saki are demoted to supporting cast in return. While I actually like how it's not just the same Kindaichi all over again, I do admit I miss the old casts as well (especially Miyuki - goddamnit, bring her back already!). In this point, I will talk about the new and old casts that will become the major characters in this series.
Old casts
With the return of Takatoo, all the old main casts (with main casts, I mean the characters that appears a lot and their cases hold significant meaning) save Miyuki have appeared in person. This include Akechi, Kenmochi, and Takatoo himself. Other recurring characters like Saki and Souta have also made appearance, though they don't seem to get big roles like they did in several of the old cases. From the old casts, the only ones that played big enough role and would probably appear again (though in lesser role, I presume) are probably Reika, Fumi, and maybe Ikutsuki and the Gentleman Thief. Though I gotta say Reika's chance of appearing might be pretty big thanks to that "Kindaichi-kun, please!" line. Anyway, I'm still hoping for the old casts to return, even though it's just a cameo - I want to see what they are doing after 20 years, haha.
That makes me wonder though. Now that Hayama has taken over Miyuki's role, what would be her role if she's back again as the new cast? Personally I think she will still play important role (you don't build up a major character appearance if they don't have important role) but I think Hayama would still be Kindaichi's main assistant (and heroine, I guess). I sincerely looking forward to them meeting face to face for the first time. Kindaichi would be screwed.
New casts
Beside Hayama, the only reccuring new characters are the lady and her son next door and Kindaichi's coworkers, which probably wouldn't play significant role in the plot. Though since we're just 2 chapters into the story, I expect more new major casts to be introduced in the future, such as the other 10 deities and, surprise surprise, Takatoo's father. I mean. It's one of the thing that can be called a plot in previous Kindaichi, if it turns out to be nothing significant I will riot (lol). But my theory about Takatoo's father still doesn't change, I'm still betting he's a new character that hasn't been introduced before, and that he will play major role in this series. Fingers crossed!
Anyway that's all for this post. Fun fact: I wrote Itsuki’s name as Ikutsuki multiple times in this post before realizing, welp, wrong character! Fortunately I put this post as a draft first... Also remind me I still have to write the last part to my Takatoo's father speculation. If you have anything to share, or you want to correct anything, feel free to reply this post! Until next time.

Just remembered that this man
Tumblr media
Would be 44 this year and he still looks like he's still in his twenties so Akechi looking like that is probably not that far fetched.
The pic is from Da Vinci magazine.
In one hand I appreciate how Akechi is still in his refined, beautiful self like we all know and love even in his late 40s but in another hand he really should look more mature for his age…
His hair was already silvery since the beginning tho so I guess there’s that

Ready for yet another 37 year old crack theory? lmao
I've been theorizing (crack, of course) that Takatoo and/or his real father is involved in the Utajima Resort murder. And that 20 years is such a long gap that something must have happened during that period of time. And that Takatoo would definitely create trouble again for our protagonists.
But how if,
During the time gap,
Takatoo became friends with Kindaichi?
I mean you have to acknowledge that they are similar, and that they can work well together (Russian Doll Murder Case, Rosenkreuz Mansion Murder Case). Takatoo claimed that they are parallel lines, and overlapping lines, in a sense, are also parallel each other. So maybe it's not that far fetched?
But Kindaichi said he'd never forgive Takatoo and swore to arrest him? Ok listen to me.
When I said "friends", I never meant it to be strictly buddy-buddy relationship. They can still be the way they are, the pursuer and the pursued - but after 20 years, they might be not as hostile as they were to each other. My favorite crack headcanon is that Kindaichi at one point successfully caught him and put him behind the bars (because seriously? That guy has escaped three times from prison, what are the police doing?), then turned to him for advice like in Silence of the Lamb. And from there something might happen and made Kindaichi reluctant to solve cases again... another mystery I really want to see the answer of.
Anyway this is just crack theory so don't kill me I just want Takatoo to appear again ok and I love Silence of the Lamb so much this is more or less a self indulgence—
...I'll shut up now.

Death March of Young Kindaichi Case Appreciation Post
So this is one of my all time favorite cases ever (from Case series), along with Opera House Third Murder (New Series) and Kindaichi Fumi’s Kidnapping Murder Case (Returns Series). This has been adapted into the Returns S2 anime if you’d like to watch it instead, but the manga version is MUCH better. The anime didn’t do the ending justice! Well since I got to hear the characters talk, I’m fine with it I guess. But still, even since I read the books in my native language, I’ve always loved it! Cue several comedic and brilliant moments in there...
Beware! This contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the case! The rest are under the cut just to be safe.
Anyway! Here are some of my favorite moments from this books.
Tumblr media
Takatoo casually revealing his identity to a random taxi driver is one of the best moments. He even told him that he’s a runaway killer! Thankfully (or not?) the driver took it as a joke but...
Tumblr media
Single-handedly blocked a bayonet using a coin? This man could be absurd sometimes.
Tumblr media
Akechi’s (morning) routine is one of my favorite running gags (if you ever read his TAF spin-off or the two Akechi books, you’d understand) and him complaining about his expensive coffee while reading the paper really shows his “annoying” side haha (like, no one would hear your show-off Akechi).
Tumblr media
Like Souta, I have to wonder what kind of dream he was having because he suddenly shouted “I’m 10 yen short!!” like there’s no tomorrow. Of course the teacher would be pissed, you dummy.
Tumblr media
Whenever Saki number 1 appears, whatever Kindaichi is doing won’t end up nicely...
Tumblr media
This guy is 100% Takatoo, guaranteed. That mask and unnerving smile won’t get him anywhere. Of course he’d pick Kindaichi for his show! And Kindaichi being a skeptical brat to him is quite interesting. He reaped what he sowed tho.
Tumblr media
Even Takatoo was dumbfounded by Kindaichi’s antics. I’m betting he didn’t expect this. Kindaichi is amazing, in a lot of ways. Those Itsuki’s feet tho.
Tumblr media
The parallel!! Akechi humored the taxi driver by saying he’s the detective who pursued Takatoo... only to get captured and stabbed not long after lmao. The driver was of course in cahoots with Takatoo, poor Akechi.
Tumblr media
Kindaichi casually opening Akechi’s wallet and “borrowing” the money inside looked so natural like it was something we should expect from him.
Tumblr media
DAT ARROW. Poor Miyuki. I was on the edge of my seat when Detective Li opened the refrigerator tho. That was so close.
Tumblr media
Remember that our protagonist is armed with pick-pocketing skills! ...or sleight of hand, if you prefer.
Tumblr media
Casually phoning his enemy to gloat is one of Takatoo’s traits these days. I think his reason of involving Kindaichi in his murders is because he’s still salty his "perfect art” are solved by Kindaichi one by one. Kindaichi is having none of his bullshit tho.
Tumblr media
A great response! His “who was it again~~!?” is so full of sarcasm and I love it.
From now on is taken from the second book.
Tumblr media
He... looked so sad. I don’t know why but he looked so sad. It’s weird to compare this to our usual Takatoo, it seems like he was contemplating something...
Tumblr media
Oh Kindaichi, stop acting like Takatoo! I know you’re relieved but no need to smile like that!
Tumblr media
You glutton, even Xiao Long was weirded out lmao.
Tumblr media
This guy... even did street performance in Hong Kong. Which was supposedly in Cantonese. I have no words. I’m starting to think maybe he just enjoys doing it.
Tumblr media
His choice of disguise is... de... cent...? At the very least. No, nope. It was so weird it would only attract attention, for Pete’s sake! You should try learning from Takatoo. Then again when not properly disguising he sometimes uses fancy masks that would also attract attention... or even gives himself away to Kindaichi and Akechi thanks to that Takatoo-esqueness.
Tumblr media
THIS PANEL. KENMOCHI REALLY TRUSTS HIM I’M SO EMOTIONAL.
Makes me wonder when Takatoo switched place with him, I really hope it was around the time Kindaichi and Akechi revealed the truth or else this page would turn out to be one of the most ironic pages ever.
Tumblr media
These two really played it well. I love how they can just leave codes on the spot and trust the other would notice and solve it... Despite all their childish banter they do respect each other.
Tumblr media
They didn’t take Akechi’s revival well lmao despite being scared shitless when they found Akechi being in critical condition.
Tumblr media
Akechi’s and Saki’s reactions I’m crying. Also get married already you two, I’ll riot if in the 37 years old series you two are still “more than friends, less than lovers”. Come on now!
Tumblr media
One of my favorite panels! The Indonesian translation was so hilarious (”kumpulan orang biasa yang diacuhkan” lmao) that I love this panel immediately.
Tumblr media
Kindaichi you liar! You were worried sick about him just a while ago! And one of the good things the anime gave us was an emphasis on how concerned Kindaichi was, that part is nice.
Tumblr media
That small Takatoo behind Akechi’s back tho. His smile is really unnerving.
Also, yay for more parallels! Here Takatoo wore black suit with white dress shirt, while Akechi wore white suit with darker t-shirt. Also, Akechi was shown clearly in light while Takatoo was obscured by the darkness behind him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm really salty they changed this part in the anime version! Takatoo shouldn’t have revealed his identity that easily, and the point on how he was disguising as someone we know so well to reduce suspicion was lost. In the manga Kindaichi had to corner him first and if it wasn’t because of some small mistakes on Takatoo’s part (which I suspect were intentional to stage his epic “death”), Kindaichi would have harder time finding him.
Also I like how he was wearing Kenmochi’s black suit instead of his beige one like in the anime, black suits Takatoo better (no pun intended).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THIS PART WAS EPIC. THANK GOD AT LEAST THEY STILL ADAPTED THIS.
Hell’s Puppeteer Takatoo Youichi chooses death. It didn’t go as expected. Bonus point if you got the reference.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This. This is another part they cut off from the anime. It changed the story significantly! Here Takatoo’s cover was blown again, marking his absolute defeat in Kindachi’s hands which ironically supposed to be Kindaichi’s defeat. Since the anime staff deleted this scene, they make him only escaped from prison twice instead of thrice. It’s such a shame they didn’t adapt one of the best Kindaichi’s victories! And I think Takatoo’s idea to disguise as Kenmochi twice was brilliant too! They should have totally adapted it.
Tumblr media
What you are suprised for, Takatoo? Of course he would notice. Didn’t you say you two were parallel lines as well as twins of light and darkness? All the more reasons to be salty at the adaptation.
Tumblr media
He’s admitted defeat. Well he sort of underestimated Kindachi here, I’ve got to say. But he still admitted defeat with such grace. This is a spoiler for another case so please skip this if you haven’t read the New series, but he too admitted his failure to trick Kindaichi in Jail Gate Private School Murder Case with grace too - I think it’s in his nature.
Tumblr media
A grand ending for a grand case, which is also the last of the Case series. See how epic this would be if they actually animated it?
Bonus: Epilogue
Tumblr media
Even with the mask the first thing Kindaichi said was that his father was fired from the company. And he said it so nonchalantly too.
The rest are good pages for an epilogue... I love them all but I can’t just dump everything here. And there’s a treat on Kindaichi and Miyuki’s relationship... as well as the premise for the New Series ;)
Anyway! This case is truly a favorite of mine, and I hope more people would appreciate it too! As this case is the last from Case series and they adapted it as the opening case for the Returns S2 anime... I know they had to change a few things and make it works but I’m still salty.
Also it’s kind of weird to see how Takatoo was so spiteful on Kindaichi in this case, going so far until he framed him from trying to murder Akechi of all people along with the murders of three others, only to cooperate with him on the Rosenkreuz case. I love that case and I like the adaptation, but it worked better in the manga because it happened long after this case. I’m still thankful for the anime tho, I really liked the seiyuu especially Takatoo’s and Akechi’s smooth voices so I’ll still watch it.
Until next time!

Excuse me but I was reminiscing about some of my older Kindaichi books and then I remember how much I love this cover:
Tumblr media
My favorite characters! The Genius Trio!! In one cover!!! They look so good here and I really love the case as well. The case is already animated but I love the manga version more, especially towards the end. The ending was heartbreaking but I like it Takatoo w h y.
Bonus: Genius Trio being wary (sans one).
Tumblr media
Bonus 2: Akechi trying to look cool (he is) like he usually does.

Reread the older series some more, and I’m more convinced about another theory on Pixiv Encyclopedia. This one... more or less has some evidence to back it up.
Yuri Ivanov (Russian Dolls Murder Case)
This person was the one who built the Russian-style building used in the case, was known as a magician, and designed the building full of tricks.
Tumblr media
The building, located in Hokkaido, was surrounded by mountains and forest, as seen in the last chapter of the case.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why is this important? Because in Ghost School Building Murder Case Takatoo mentioned something that came out as strange for me:
Tumblr media
In the highlighted part he said “Like the Rosenkreuz Mansion and the Western-style house in the middle of the mountains”, which refers to the “piece of puzzle” he needs to find out about his roots. Strange, isn’t it? We only know the Rosenkreuz Mansion and the Kogane Junior High building as the buildings made/renovated by his supposed real father, so what is this “Western-style house”?
Regarding to that, we were shown a few glimpse of the location where Takatoo was listening to Kindaichi’s deduction (it’s not the Ghost School Building because the building was located in an island, while Takatoo went through the forest before).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only building(s) referred as “Western-style” in the series, as far as I can remember, were “Wax Doll Castle” (burned down), “Western-style Village”, “Western-style Hotel”, and “Russian Doll Mansion”. Though I have to admit Russian Doll Mansion doesn’t look similar to the silhouette (and that Takatoo said “So is this it?” when he first arrived like he had never been there before), location wise it could be very well the same building.
Another point is that his supposed real father is probably related to Europe. Rosenkreuz was a German name, and even though Ivanov was supposed to be Russian, he is still related to Europe somehow. Moreover, a magician designing tricky building? He could be added to suspect list, at the very least.
Finished rereading Detective School Q until the latest chapter available. I was grinning the whole time whenever Cerberus/King Hades mentioned “perfect murder” as art — reminded me of certain serial killer who calls his “perfect murder plan” as “work of art”.
On related note, after finally remembering that King Hades’ mother was a genius murderer Kokuou Yurika, taking account on how Meiosei’s modus operandi is almost the same as Takatoo’s I think if Takatoo’s father is not a new character and crossover is possible, King Hades is on top of my “Takatoo’s Real Father Favorite Suspect List™”. Currently it looks like this:
New character not yet introduced - because rather than making someone without much importance from past case as his father, I prefer him to be a completely new person we haven’t yet to know.
King Hades (Detective School Q) - as far as crossover goes, King Hades would be a perfect candidate as Takatoo’s father (or if you want to stretch it, grandfather). He’s the son of a genius artist and genius criminal - exactly what Takatoo is now, and it would fit perfectly with Takatoo’s “step” father’s exclaim of “that demon”. Flaws in this theory including it only works as crossover, King Hades had already play an important role as “evil ancestor” for Ryuu, and generally making the story unnecessarily more convoluted (Kuzuryuu-Kokuou-Amakusa family is already a huge mess after all, we don’t need to add Takatoo, Chikamiya, and Misaki there).
Another person related to Kuzuryuu Takumi and/or Kokuou Yurika (Detective School Q) - same as above. Yurika really worked like Takatoo when it comes to making perfect murder plan, and Kuzuryuu’s artistic sense is something Takatoo might inherit too.
The person who admired the Phantom and built the original Opera House (Opera House Murder Case(s)) - because masks are one of Takatoo’s leitmotif and he was said to “disappear” just like that. Moreover, he left a building used as the place of murder, same as Rosenkreuz Mansion and Ghost School Building one. Making a Opera House would take a lot of money so this is one of my favorite crack theory (as well as the most probable one for now). Flaws including Takatoo not previously having any connection to the Opera House. I wrote a short rebuttal about this here.

Like, how if we throw the three of them into a locked room/inhabited island with some immediate dangers, with no way to escape except by cooperating with each other? Their alliance would be tense and more fragile than glass but I'm sure they'd unexpectedly work well together (it's three people paralleling each other after all).
And when they finally get out of there Kindaichi would trap Takatoo and Akechi would arrest him immediately.
Headcanon (Part 1)
Not sure if this has been established in canon or not, but after Magical Express Murder Case Akechi and the police must have run a background check on Takatoo. He was a genius murderer who intentionally invited the cop to his killing spree, they must be at least unnerved by his actions. Which means at some point Akechi would find out that Takatoo was his junior in high school and that he probably has met him long before Takatoo turned into a twisted magician (I think before the spin-off was published he first met Takatoo in Las Vegas?). If I may ask for something, I want Akechi to acknowledge this fact to Takatoo or even cooperate with him because Kindaichi has already done that in Russian Doll and Rosenkreuz Mansion Murder Case, c'mon, those three are quite similar.
On another note…
Takatoo might think he’s the parallel of Kindaichi, the evil twin to his light - but actually Takatoo and Akechi also parallel each other so damn much. Akechi wears light colored clothing and is generally associated with “white” and “blue”, Takatoo wears black and other dark color and is associated with “black” and “red”. Akechi is the “pursuer” and Takatoo is the “pursued”. They sit on the opposite side in a war, literally. But they also have quite a lot of similarities - they have set the same record as two people who achieved perfect score in their entrance exam, both are excellent musicians (Akechi with violin and Takatoo with piano), both are lauded as genius in their respective “fields”, and both have interest in magic. They both also speak in very formal and polite manner using the more formal pronoun “watashi”, able to speak in other languages fluently, and both serve as rivals and parallels to Kindaichi as well. We often see a lot of Takatoo vs Kindaichi showdown, and sometimes Kindaichi + Akechi vs Takatoo as well, but I don’t think there’s a lot of instances where Akechi has to face Takatoo alone. At the very least when he fails to capture Takatoo Kindaichi would be able to use all those insults about losing to Takatoo back to Akechi.
Also, one more thing? Please give me that Takatoo and Akechi piano and violin duet thank you very much.

For those curious about the theories on Pixiv Encyclopedia page (in Japanese).

Takatoo Youichi’s Timeline
After his spin-off was released, I was confused as hell because some of the events didn’t match (according to my theory at that time). Now I’ve compiled my interpretation of his known timeline, which hopefully can be used to predict the identity of his real father (edit: added pics for references). Here it is:
Age 7: aspiring magician (England)
Tumblr media
We first caught a glimpse of his childhood during his flashback in Magical Express Murder Case, which showed us how he was brought to see Reiko’s magic show along with his “step” father in London. He was so impressed with her tricks that he devoted himself to study magic, which is the basic of his murder tricks in adulthood.
Though not confirmed yet, in Rosenkreuz Mansion Murder Case Takatoo’s “step” father revealed that he has a younger sister from different mother - I think it was when he was about this age too.
Age 10: met Reiko (England)
Tumblr media
We later saw him again when he was 10, learning magic alone in a park (later he developed a habit to perform magic to children in parks). There he finally met Reiko face-to-face, and based on her reaction, she knew that Takatoo was her son. She then taught him some basic magic, and promised him to share all her magic tricks when he became an adult and capable magician. He was such a fanboy to Reiko and I can’t help seeing how enthusiastic he was when he was a child - whether it was only to Reiko or not.
Age 15: entered high school (Japan)
Tumblr media
This is from his spin-off, Takatoo Shounen no Jikenbo. We saw him as a freshman in high school, scoring perfect score at the entrance exam (coincidentally getting the same record as Akechi). Himeno-sensei confirmed that he had previously lived in England, like we have known (thus his perfect English). At this point he was closer to the current Takatoo we all know and love instead of the excited boy he was when he was young - I’m really curious on what the hell happened during this 5 years gap. We can also see how he wasn’t getting along well with his “step” father, and how little his “step” father trusted him (accusing him to be the one who created problems when an incident happened, yelling at him whenever he came home late, saying he’s not similar to Reiko at all and that he took after someone he called “demon”). This also marked his debut as a killer, when he killed his classmates after he tried to provoke and frame him as a serial murderer.
Age 17: death of “step father” and revelation (Japan)
Tumblr media
Takatoo revealed in Magical Express Murder case that his “step” father died when he was 17. In the 1997 anime, the funeral scene depicted him being buried (Christian-style) so at first I assumed he died in England, but then we got his spin-off and he was supposedly still a student in Japan - we even got to see his “step” father alive at that time (thus confused me to no end). However, since the manga didn’t show us anything from the funeral, I assumed it would make more sense if his “step” father died in Japan*, thus allowing Takatoo to keep living in Japan and graduate from high school.
After his “step” father died, he found a diary that showed how he was the son of Reiko, which he wasn’t all surprised. At first I didn’t find any problem, but since Takatoo revealed that he wasn’t his real father, I wonder what exactly written in that diary? Was it his “step” father’s, or was it his real father’s? If it had detailed information about his real parentage, wouldn’t it be strange for Takatoo’s “step” father to own it? Or did it only contain information about his mother?
* Since this was released years after the original Magical Express Murder Case was revealed tho, there are some inconsistencies: like I mentioned before, the funeral scene looked like it happened in England. The diary ownership is also left unclear. Another one is that in the original, Takatoo was implied to return to Japan after he finished his study in Italy, so he should have stayed in England all the time before that. Also, when he went back to England and found Reika’s trick note, he said “going back to England after three years”. It means when he was 17, he was still living in England, thus his “step” father also died there. However these are simply minor inconsistencies so one could ignore them just fine.
Age 18: Reiko died and start of magic studies (Italy)
Tumblr media
In Magical Express Murder Case, Takatoo said that he heard about his mother’s death when he was studying magic with a professional magician in Italy. Assuming my previous interpretation as correct, he must have started studying after he finished high school. At around this time, Reiko sent her trick note to him on his birthday, and not long after that she was killed by her students.
Tumblr media
Curiously, Akechi said he met Reiko at the airport a few weeks before Reiko’s death - the time when he learned about Reiko’s notebook. That time, Reiko said that she just arrived from England - half for job, and half for personal reason. I think the personal reason was related to Takatoo. Maybe she found out about the “step” father’s death and him not living in England anymore?
Age 20: finished his studies and received Reiko’s note (England)
Tumblr media
Takatoo said that he returned to England after finishing his magic studies (3 years later), and among the letters sent to his house in England, one of them contained Reiko’s trick note (which was sent to him on his birthday two years ago). He was so impressed by it, and when he heard about a Japanese magic troupe that performed really well, he went back to Japan a few months later to see it. Needless to say it didn’t go well.
Tumblr media
That would be the start of his revenge plan against those who killed his mother. I think he applied to be the manager at this point. Edit: Takatoo said at Magical Express that he already worked as manager for 2 years, so it’s more likely he applied to be the manager at age 21.
Age 21: found the truth (Japan)
Tumblr media
In Magical Express Murder Case, Takatoo said that he found out the truth much faster than he thought. In the original manga, the four students who killed Reiko said “three years ago we were still Reiko’s student”, and it was consistent with my timeline since Reiko was killed three years ago and Takatoo was 18.
Tumblr media
I think he started to devise his plan at this point, though I don’t know why he only performed it two years later.
Age 23: main timeline, met Giselle, journey for real father (Japan)
Tumblr media
According to Satomi in Magical Express Murder Case, Reiko’s death was five years ago, meaning Takatoo’s revenge happened when he was 23 (consistent). Assuming the whole Kindaichi main timeline happened in one year, Takatoo would still be 23 when he performed all his murder plans. It also means he found out about Giselle and started to seek the truth about his real father at age 23 too.
Tumblr media
This is also consistent with Akechi’s age (28), because Akechi had already graduated at least for one year (Akechi Kengo’s Student Murder Case) when Takatoo became a freshman (15 year old) and that Takatoo was the first student to get perfect score at entrance exam after four years (Akechi) meaning their age difference would be around 4-5 years.
So far that’s all known about Takatoo’s timeline, not counting 37 Year Old series (he hasn’t confirmed to appear yet). If he does, he would be 43 right now. I’m certain he would appear again because Returns series’ ending hasn’t concluded his arc yet, so I’m optimist he would create problem for our protagonist again.
Until next time.

It's kind of funny to see how in the past Kindaichi usually were the one asking around for info about past cases when something happened but now he's the one withholding Utajima's bloody history from people, the irony.
Anyway I need Kenmochi, Itsuki, Fumi, etc. to appear (even as cameo is fine!) and of course for my murder child Takatoo to take the main stage again (he's like, what, 43 in current timeline?) But seeing how Kindaichi and Akechi literally don't change at all he probably will stay the same.
