Week 11: Compulsory Question One.
To begin with, my group and I did not thoroughly plan how we would arrange or what we would say. As a result, we chose to carry out the task in a spontaneous way.
Tumblr media
For instance, "Just do things and experiment." These manifestos are frequent among designers who wish to push themselves beyond their comfort zones to express themselves freely through their designs. Other interesting manifestos, including "Take a 5-minute break," are greatly helpful to our mental and physical health, for we can feel extremely anxious, so being able to take a moment to breathe and being kind to ourselves could really help with what we do.
The final group outcome is very versatile and meaningful to us as a whole; if there is anything I would change, it would be to better structure our list or to have planned ahead in terms of what we want to illustrate in our list; seeing fellow students' work with their creative layout concepts encourages the idea to do the same for my own group manifesto as well.
Tumblr media
Within my creative process, I frequently revisit certain manifestos, like "Don't analyse when brainstorming. " which is very important to me as a reminder to avoid self-limitations in my designs. It's crucial for me to remember this during my process. For example, when working on my studio project, rather than just thinking about ideas and declining them in my mind, I encourage myself to proceed with a hands-on experiment, and as a result, I find it to be more meaningful because it leads to more valuable creative ideas and growth.
"I believe in myself and my capabilities." another manifesto I have within myself since I struggle with self-confidence; therefore, these messages help me be more confident in my abilities and capabilities. I apply this manifesto often during presentations in class or on my project. I want to be able to showcase my design, my strength, and my project confidently and convincingly for those who are there to witness it, and to be able to do that, I need to believe in myself and what I can offer.
These manifestos stood by as a reminder, inspiration, and tool in my list of design manifestos that I created from my experiences ranging from completing school tasks to self-challenging situations. "There's no comparison when learning; there's only progress." By keeping an open mind to stress and adjusting my perspective, I find positivity in the challenges.
Every in-class practice session in CTS B is crucial for my growth as a design student. These sessions have deepened my understanding, allowing me to apply the knowledge I've gained and preparing me for the real-world challenges I'll face upon graduation. My evolving mindset, approach to design challenges and tasks have not only shaped me as a creator but have also defined my values for my future in the creative field.

Week 12: Compulsory Question Two.
As I go over my artistic vision responses, I notice what I had in mind but wasn't able to convey appropriately. I've shared about the ways I want to keep learning throughout my creative process since I'm naturally interested and like to bring fresh perspectives to the table, but above all, as a young Cambodian design student studying overseas, I've observed that our art and culture are still limited and have yet to be appreciated internationally. Even if the local community has steadily improved in recent years as a result of the rise of young artists and skills, in this regard, my goal is to be a part of what brings forth the artistic colours of my country.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I began my journey as a photographer. Developing my skills over the years has provided me enjoyment while working alongside an empowering community. As I progressed through the various aspects of being a photographer, I developed diverse creative skills and practices, leading to a need to broaden my learning and what I could contribute to my future vision, as well as an ambition to become an art director who can manage and collaborate on projects that will uplift my culture and brand. My biggest goal is to have my own local creative agency that is able to help the Cambodian art scene and local artists.
Cambodia is a country with a rich heritage and culture; whenever an artist designs something, we always consider ways to incorporate cultural concepts into our creations in modern days. For instance, in the music scene, artists tend to mix traditional instruments with modern sound to expand their creativity and creation. We believe that it serves as a way to internationally promote our talent and art. Nonetheless, it's also a way to preserve our history while discovering new ways to expand our artistic traditions.

I mentioned Cambodian traditional pattern design, or "Kbach Khmer," because I like how the patterns serve as decorative components and can be adapted into various forms, such as fine arts, graphic design, architecture, product design, fashion, and beyond.

These patterns could represent various meanings and values, or they could simply be ornamental. In the future, I hope to expose these patterns and other local artist work to a wider audience through my diligence and dedication as an artist myself. I feel that our culture deserves to be recognized, and we deserve recognition for our talents equally with our neighboring countries.
Finally, in CTS B, I acquired many important insights that expanded my knowledge beyond just designing. My artistic ideas and views, as well as the importance of how I want to express myself and my identity (CTS B), have been helpful in finding greater clarity on this topic. As an aspiring artist and a young learner, I am committed to realizing my ambitions and, ultimately, creating opportunities to not only represent myself but also to showcase the essence of my country.

WEEK 3: This Is How You Connect Practice with Society.
A lot of time, brands and artists use different forms of art to create a product that helps convey a motive or message on issues that they want to bring awareness and attention to. This kind of action happens when we apply our creative practices to our projects and relate them to societal issues.
In 2016, Núria López developed "Blind Words" as her senior project, which involved creating a modular font combining typographic strokes with raised braille dots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shepard Fairey is an excellent illustration of how creative work can be linked to society. He's an artist who uses his art and campaigns to show his backing for important causes like equality and global warming, among others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the emergence of AI, agencies are using it to make campaigns like The WorldWide Fund for Nature’s Annual #WorldWideOutnature that help support local communities in protecting their natural resources, promote sustainability in markets and policies, and safeguard species and habitats.
Tumblr media
Another brand that applies creative practices to social issues is Bodyform’s ‘Womb Stories’ campaign from 2020. Their aim is to bring more attention to women's infertility, first periods, and menopausal hot flushes and how these can affect our mental and physical health.

To me, I think that as artists, we can choose what we want to express in our projects. While art can be about beauty, it becomes more meaningful when it includes a story, message, or purposes. This can create a stronger emotional bond between the artist or brand and their audience.

WEEK 2: This Is How You Connect Theory and Practice.
Finding my identity has always been a journey that never ends. I always found meaning in having a positive impact and being my most authentic self. I can confidently perceive myself as a person who is empathic, optimistic, and strong, but I'm still finding out more about myself every day. Yet, I would always stand strong with my theory of wanting to live an authentic life and being true to myself.
Tumblr media
I've always admired artists who have found their identity, which can be seen and felt through their crafts. Even through collaboration, when two artists collaborate with one another, they have this hierarchy in the craft, but we are still able to distinguish which part or creativity comes from which individual because their identities are unique and it defines them. With their identity, they leave an impression that represents a piece of who they are every time and everywhere they go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During our group activity, I realised that how I project my internal factors is the same as how others perceive my external factors. I am described as being like a ray of sunshine, which proves that I have succeeded in building a part of who I am.
If I were to relate this to my creative process, I love expressing myself in my designs, I value my own and other people's happiness, and through my art, I want to brighten up smiles, evoke laughter, or just make people feel a certain way by communicating those messages through my work.

WEEK 1: Creative process & Critical thinking.
Tumblr media
Critical thinking and creative processes are in contrast to one another. Combining these two skills together and balancing them out could offer a very beneficial outcome. In the design industry and my personal study progress, expanding these skills is very crucial for my personal development. Communicative design is also an outlet to solve problems and create new solutions to different issues.
To be able to communicate or better solve a problem, I need to first understand the structure and roots of the issue. This comes from my critical thinking skills and combining them with my creativity. These two skills inspire one another to build up a more imaginative, insightful explanation that challenges biases and also allows me to utilise visuals and design to achieve not only creative results, but it also endorses a growth mindset within myself and those I'm working with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through research, I have stumbled upon a website called Weapons of Reason, which is a platform by Human After All that seeks to understand and convey the global challenges shaping our world. They express their concern or bring awareness to their message by also incorporating illustrations, drawings, and creative ideas. To me, I see this as very inspirational. Not only does it help their message to be interesting, but in this modern world of the internet, they also allow access globally for audiences to interact with their products.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My observation of the class activities that we have been practicing has been very helpful in enhancing these two skills.
