Kenny and Cartman’s Spiritual Connection: A South Park Meta Analysis Thingy
Okay so I’ve discussed this with a few of my mutuals at length and finally decided to post about it. Basically I believe that Eric and Kenny share some sort of psychic/spiritual connection and that this is a concept that should be explored more in fanworks.
Here’s my evidence:
Firstly, season 3′s The Succubus. At the end of this episode; Cartman, as a way of permanently dealing with his vision problems, harvested Kenny’s eyes. I believe that this (as well as taking away his adorable glasses) permanently established a link between Kenny and Eric. it’s also why i headcanon eric as heterochromatic even though its implied he took both eyes but fuck it one of them could’ve rotted or something this isn’t even relevant holy shit This link would first manifest itself in Bigger, Longer and Uncut which came out mere weeks later. In the movie, Cartman was the only one who could see Kenny’s spirit, which appeared before him multiple times.
Now, pray tell, why is Eric the only one who can see Kenny? Because he’s literally seeing through Kenny’s eyes.
A few seasons later we’ve got Cartmanland, wherein Kenny dies at Eric’s theme park and Cartman is sued. His response? “What? Kenny? He dies all the time!”
This is the first and to my knowledge only time another main character has acknowledged Kenny’s curse. It may be a throwaway joke but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s canon that Cartman is aware of Kenny’s curse. How? It is my belief that Eric gained this knowledge when he harvested Kenny’s eyes.
Later on in Season 5 Kenny dies for ‘real’, in, well, Kenny Dies. In Season 6′s A Ladder to Heaven, the boys win a contest to get a tour of a candy shop. They realise that they don’t have the winning ticket stub as they left it with Kenny and go to find Kenny’s body to get it back. Instead they find Kenny’s urn and empty it, disappointed to find what Cartman assumes is chocolate milk mix - but is actually Kenny’s ashes.
Cartman, oblivious, drinks the ashes (along with Kenny’s soul) and soon begins having visions of Kenny’s memories. These continue throughout the episode and the boys eventually use this new found power to find out where the ticket stub is.
Cartman assumes he has merely gained Kenny’s memories but that is quickly debunked when-
“Stop calling me poor you fat dick!”
- Kenny speaks through Cartman’s body. His soul is literally inhabiting Cartman, and they are sharing a body.
In both The Death Camp of Tolerance and The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers Kenny’s soul is still in Cartman’s body and he speaks through Cartman multiple times (in the former he’s even able to control Cartman’s body in order to make a paper airplane), until finally in The Biggest Douche in the Universe Cartman grows ill. The Cartmans and Chef travel to Scotland to visit Chef’s parents for an exorcism, Kenny and Cartman arguing aloud all the while.
The exorcism works, and, because this is South Park, Kenny eventually winds up in Rob Schneider’s body, thus ending the saga of Kenny and Eric sharing a body.
So, what was the point in all this? Well, there’s no big, grandiose thesis here. I just found in interesting how their were multiple examples of Kenny and Cartman communicating on some deeper level; Eric seeing his ghost, Eric remembering his deaths, and, most notably, Kenny being able to share a body with Eric for a period of time. It is my personal theory that Kenny and Eric share some spiritual link, a soul bond if you will, and that it all started with Cartman harvesting Kenny’s eyes in The Succubus.
