Kayak Dry Bags

Waterproof kayak dry bags are available in both coated nylon and PVC materials. Roll-down closures are the easiest to use and provide the most dependable seals. PVC bags are generally more durable than nylon and are widely available in a variety of sizes and weights.

When purchasing waterproof PVC kay dry bags, look for quality materials. The strength of PVC bags is in the thread--the vinyl only provides the seal. The fiber scrim of nylon or polyester gives a bag its tensile strength and puncture resistance.

Less expensive PVC fabrics have a lower thread count, indicated by the larger gaps in the screenlike pattern of the underlying threads. PVC kayak gear bags have two sides--a textured scrim side and a smooth face side. To check thread count, examine the scrim side.

The material's thickness, combined with denier and thread count, is the best indication of the fabric's overall ability to withstand abrasion, punctures, cutting, and tearing. Heavier, stiffer materials do not fold as tightly and will not form as reliable a seal in a standard roll-down closure as will a lighter-weight fabric. Generally, the heavier the material, the stiffer its feel--so you must usually compromise between the bag's water-tightness and its durability.

Kayak Deck-Mount Dry Bags

Another good option is a deck-mounted kayak dry bag like the one pictured at the right. Mounted directly in front of or behind the cockpit, it allows you immediate access to your most frequently needed gear like sunscreen, water bottle, chart case, etc. Shop around and look for a durable, waterproof model or use our recommendations below. These are very handy and once you use one, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it!

Waterproof Hard Cases

If your a photography fan or have sensitive electronic equipment that needs to stay dry, consider a kayak dry hard case to store your valuables in. Just make sure that the dimensions will allow it to fit through the hatch opening on your kayak. They're available in many different sizes and the interiors of the dry box can be customized to fit your equipment on many of the models.

Kayak Spray Skirt

A kayak spray skirt has one basic, but very important function--to keep water from pouring in through your cockpit. Some people would have you believe a spray skirt or spray deck is an accessory. One of these kayaker t shirt would be more of an accessory. But, a kayak spray skirt is really as much a part of your kayak as your paddle.

Unless you want a wet lap, get in the habit of always wearing your spray skirt. Most paddles come with drip rings, and most drip rings let a steady trickle of water down the paddle shaft that is destined for your lap.

And don't forget those big power boats: When a wake-making powerboat goes by and the wave created by his wake rolls up on the deck of your kayak and fills your cockpit.......you'll wish you had your kayak spray skirt in place! :)

The kayak spray skirt is a water-resistant barrier that seals around your abdomen and the boats coaming to keep water from entering the kayak through the cockpit. Spray skirts are made out of neoprene wet-suit material or coated nylon fabric.

The rubber material is flexible; it stretches taut over the coaming and gives a snug fit around your waist, forming a positive seal and a smooth surface that sheds water.

Coated nylon provides greater ventilation and a more comfortable fit. Nylon spray skirts are less expensive and more durable. It won't stretch, so it's not as snug and it will tend to pool water.

Not a good thing if you're caught in the rain. Some models use both materials--neoprene to stretch over the coaming and nylon fabric around your abdomen--taking advantage of the best qualities of each and making a nice compromise. Snug-fitting all-neoprene kayak skirts work best for practicing kayak rolls or paddling in rough water or surf.

Fitting Your Kayak Spray Skirt

A well-fitting spray skirt is tight in front of the paddler, so that water doesn't pool up. It should be snug around your waist, but not so tight as to be confining or affect your breathing. If you really push down just ahead of the tunnel (the part around your waist), the skirt should not pop off the coaming.

It should be tight enough so that when you hook the edge around the back of the cockpit coaming and pull it forward, it doesn't slip free. More importantly, it should not be so tight as to be difficult to pop free when you want you release it. Every spray skirt should have a grab loop at the front, to help you release it in the event of a capsize.
