Do you ever think about how in order for the idea of stranger things s1 to work they had to create a boy so special and loved to the point that his mother and friends would do the impossible to find him and bring him back, even if that includes monsters and alternate dimensions? Especially since that boy doesn't get a lot of screen time but he hunts the narrative, he's a fundamental part of it.
You have to understand why people want him back so badly, why they love him, you have to get that.
And Will Byers was born out of that idea.

Ok so I just kinda thought about this and like coherently put it together so.
Here Mike is saying he likes getting gifts to El before she leaves
So when he goes to California he brings her a gift because he expected her to remember this and think of him by getting hin something, so he brought her flowers so he wasn't the only one receiving something (how sweet of you Micheal ❤)
But El doesn't get him anything at all..
So imagine how happy he must've been here, because he realized that Will thought of him in the way he expected El to, the way he expected his significant other to. That says a lot to me.
