gaining approval in da2: careful consideration of each dialogue response, micromanaging you party because some characters literally can’t be taken out together without losing approval, the eternal struggle of Getting Carver To Love You Back
gaining approval in dai: i stood on a hill and watched a bear fighting darkspawn on the storm coast and blackwall slightly approved three times

I wish Anders had been in Inquisition. My adoration of him aside, how cool would it have been as a side quest to help him during the Here Lies the Abyss quest? I know that obviously being close to Corypheus would have been disastorous, but have Hawke ask the Inquisitor and crew for help on a sensitive matter. They go to a different location and there's Anders slowly coming from the foliage looking so tired and worn down, fear in his clouded eyes as they dart between the new people and Hawke. Circumstantial friendship, rivalry, or romance dialogue depending on choices in 2 between him and Hawke. "I'm not worth this, Hawke..." "Are you sure about this, love?" "Thank you, Hawke..."
The Inquisitor could ask him questions about Kirkwall and the rebellion and his stance on what happened at the Temple of Sacred Ashes. Different dialogue options whether you agreed with it or not.
If you bring Cole along he has dialogue where he reads his mind. "He suffers and hates himself for causing it. Fracture...split... not who he was meant to be anymore...Lies, deceit, for the greater good...what you thought was good...but what is right when the world is wrong? Debris raining down...it was the only way, he was a hero and you changed him..." Anders asks him to not read his mind. Cole admits he wasn't reading his mind, he was reading Justice's who feels guilt at having changed Anders.
If you bring Vivienne, she has dialogue about how Anders is a prime example why mages are mistrusted, why the Circle is necessary, and all the loss of that tragic event. The two will definitely get in an argument, that you can intercede or let continue.
Dorian isn't able to completely empathize having come from Tevinter, he sits a bit on the fence. While he supports mage autonomy, he has seen first hand the dangers of letting that go unchecked. He may make a sassy comment about how Anders should have gone bigger or that it was a particularly uncouth display.
If you bring Varric he would no doubt have snarky dialogue and throw in a few "Blondies" for good measure. He would probably be a bit more distant than his normal approachable self for what Anders had put them through and destroying his homeland and Hawke's life (if romanced, as they would likely be fugitives), but he does still care for his friend.
If you bring Cassandra she would probably be a boiling pot of barely concealed rage and contempt. She would add biting comments to any defense he has for himself and inevitably storm off, even yelling at you for bringing her along when she would never want to see the face of the man who blew up a most sacred, venerable place.
You have to bring Solas, who is initially very bristled and enraged at what Anders had done, even threatening him for his hubris at chaining a spirit to himself. Justice comes out in Anders' defense, setting Solas straight that it was a mutual pact done out of friendship and revolution, championing for a better cause for the disenfranchised masses. Solas apologizes, admittedly fascinated, and figures out a way to undo it, saving the spirit and man.
It may even require a war room meeting to find an artifact or book, to which Cullen withdraws support for that particular mission. Leliana may be heard sighing and mentioning she tried to stop it before it got to that point.

I hc Hawke as being a phenomenal dancer. Surprisingly lithe and graceful for such a sturdy frame, full of passion and movement, inherently knowing when to use strength and fluidity. Growing up in Ferelden, he wouldn't know many dances outside of jigs, but upon meeting Isabela I bet she would teach him a few Rivaini - and even Antivan - dances that he would pick up flawlessly. She rejoiced in finally having a competent dance partner and readily supplied him with more lessons.
It would become a semi-regular sight at the Hanged Man; the two banging mugs at the minstrels to play something livelier for them to dance to. Varric, as a favor, through merchant's guild connections would acquire different instruments and compositions. Once found, Isabela and Hawke would twirl and spin and sway their hips at the hazard and scandal of other patrons.
I do, however, see Hawke as being a truly horrendous singer - though it would not stop him. Fenris would slip the minstrels extra coin to play something jauntier to distract Hawke from his caterwauling. This was to Fenris' detriment as Hawke would perk up and see him by the minstrels and try to pull him into a dance, enjoying his sour faces at Hawke's mischievous antagonizing. Hawke would form a vice grip around his comrade's waist who would subsequently try to extricate himself like a cat in a bath.
While Hawke left his unrequited dance partner be, more content with a subtle foot tap and begrudging head bob, he would seek his next victim. Anders would readily accept the invitation to dance and though he would enjoy every second, he would be quite gangly and stiff. Hawke would try to loosen his hips by teaching him the way Isabela had, making the mage blush faintly (thankful for the dim light of the Hanged Man), but there was no rhythm in that body to spare. It wouldn't be his fault, there had just never been much reason for dances on the run or in the Circle - and Fereldens weren't known for their dances to begin with.
Isabela would use the opportunity to teach a very eager Merrill a few tricks, but she would always be just too light on the balls of her feet and bouncy to get the sensuality of the movements just so. Regardless, the peals of laughter between the two would often be louder than the music as they jumped through dance movements like hallas.
Varric would warn, when goaded on the floor, that his dwarven ass was far too comfortable in its seat to get up, but he would enjoy the show. A second round of pleading would earn them a "I would, I just don't want to show you up, Rivaini." Finally, with enough prompting and promises from Isabela he would be coaxed in; and though there was nothing flashy in his moments, even a bit rigid as they were, he true to form kept up with the best of them, even dipping Hawke to his bellowing laugh and surprise.
Aveline would at times drop by the Hanged Man on "patrol," but in truth she wanted to check in on her merry band of misfits. She would never dance unless Donnic was present and the two would move to a beat all their own, separate from the music playing, in a darker corner of the tavern.
Similarly, if Sebastian deigned to join their rowdy crew in Lowtown, he would only do so for the promise of Bethany. Sebastian would offer his hand in a reverent bow that she would gingerly accept. Like her older sibling, she was a quick study and though their movements were nothing like the scandalous gyration of her brother and friends, theirs was a subtle sway of a chaste romance shared only between the two. He was a proficient dancer, a necessity at court, and she could follow him easily.
Carver would sit and brood with a glower darker than Fenris, unsurprised at his older brother's shenanigans being the center of attention again. His brother's shadow bounced and jumped around the tavern as he did, and as always shrouding Carver in it. He would finish the last dregs of his ale and stand to return home, where he would rather feel alone by himself than surrounded by the others. It wouldn't be until a small, cool, hand wrapped around his that he would turn and see Merrill's wide, shining eyes staring up at him. She would bounce on the balls of her feet and tug him towards the floor. Hawke would smile to himself as he saw his younger brother's cold shoulders loosen as he attempted to keep pace with Merrill's sprightly and jovial dancing.
