Movement Around The World - Project Display
Here is my display for the movement project:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My 3D pieces:
Tumblr media
I chose to display these pieces as they show how I have incorporated painting and printing in to ceramics. To the left I put my ceramic stamp that I screen printed a pattern on to and also painted. I also printed a cut out square of a recycled tire into clay then fired and painted it black. I used this as a road to have my painted ceramic van ‘travel’ down. I also displayed two glazed pieces that I had printed designs of a campsite on one and a shell on the bowl.
My 2D pieces:
Tumblr media
The pink print is a relief print that I feel shows the movement of travelling to the alps. Half the print shows lines and a shoe whilst the other shows a tent. I feel this piece shows the journey and movement to get to the Alps. The middle piece is a lino print depicting a camping scene in the Alps. The final print (on the right) shows footprints and a tent surrounded by the mountains.
I feel these pieces summarise my project as they show how I’ve incorporated my travel experience in the Alps in my three electives: print, painting & ceramics.

Relief printing
27/2/23
Today I decided to make another print using the packaging of a takeaway wrap. I chose to use this material because takeaway food is often eaten on long journeys when traveling. I felt the pattern on the cardboard looked like the the pattern at the bottom of shoes so I decided to cut it out in the shape of footprints.
Tumblr media
I rolled out blue ink on to a sheet of acetate then placed my cardboard footprints on top:
Tumblr media
This creates a silhouette of the footprints but it also picked up on a previous print that had been made using this acetate sheet. I liked the effect this created as it looks like other marks made into the ground. I than placed the cardboard cutouts on to another page and printed that. Lastly I placed a page on top of the acetate to pick up on the patterns left in to the ink. Here is the results:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to create another scene of camping in the Alps and included the footprint shapes to show the movement of the journey to get there :
Tumblr media
I was really happy with how this came out:
Tumblr media
Here I should’ve placed the pieces together to show the texture of the tent but I like how this page has a second tent in the distance. I feel like it looks more like a campsite with multiple tents. I think the cloth material really created the effect of the alps.
Tumblr media
With this piece I decided to place the cut outs over the silhouettes so that a more faded blue would show the textures on to the piece:

Glazing my ceramic pieces
27/2/23
A couple of weeks ago I printed designs on to clay using grey slip dip and and hot glue. After collecting my pieces from the kiln I decided to glaze them with a clear glaze. Here they are before I put the glaze on:
Tumblr media
I went back to the studio to put the clear glaze on:
Tumblr media
The final results:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also collected these two pieces from the kiln. I had printed a design of the Alps on to these clay slabs using a relief method with newsprint and black slip dip.
Tumblr media
I used a glaze pencil to draw on more detail to the Alps and added my campervan in the corner.
Tumblr media
I drew circles to give the impression of the sky.
Tumblr media
I then dipped them in turquoise glaze, ready to go back in the kiln.

Movement- Project statement
For the movement project I focused on movement around the world through travelling. My electives are print, painting and ceramics. I spent week one and two in ceramics, week three and four in painting and the last two weeks in print.
Over the summer I spent five weeks camping in a tent and travelling around Europe with my family in a van. I made many pieces depicting this journey. Maps, shells as souvenirs, tire marks, footprints, the Alps, van life and camping are the main themes seen in my work throughout the three electives.
I combined the maps, tire prints, ceramic van and other paths I made in each discipline to create a abstract map of my movement through travelling.
Tumblr media
I found the easiest elective to make a interdisciplinary link was ceramics as many aspects of working with clay involves either printing and/or painting. For example:
Printing patterns I designed on to clay-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Painting ceramic pieces-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Printing shapes in to clay -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I combined my three disciplines to create a post stamp. I screen printed circular patterns on to a slab of clay, then printed shells, wheel like circles and other mark making tools into the clay. I used a nail art tool to draw on roads to show the journey taken whilst travelling. I used a plastic tool to print in to the edges of this piece to give it a stamp like shape.Once this piece was out of the kiln I painted it.
Tumblr media
I also combined print, painting and ceramics by printing a recycled tire wheel into clay and then painting it once it was fired. The tire print shows the movement of the vans wheels whilst travelling around.

I really enjoyed this project as I learned many new things about working with clay, painting life drawings, making stamps and screen printing. In the workshops we explored different ways of mark making. I used shells and a piece of a recycled tire to make prints in to clay and as a mark making tools in a painting workshop.

Combining my three electives: Painting, Print & Ceramics
24/2/23
Today I gathered all the maps, tire marks and paths I made for the movement project. I started off by combining my stamped prints of a map, abstract ceramic map of the alps, map printed into clay and watercolour painting of a map. I put them all together to make a big map.
Tumblr media
I then combined all the prints I made with a recycled tire. I printed it with lino ink and paint, used it as a painting tool across a page and printed it in to clay. I also put in prints and a painting with Indian ink that I made in ceramics. I put these pieces together to show one big path showing the movement of a journey.
Tumblr media
I then decided to put everything together to create a even bigger map/ pathway!
Tumblr media
I added the ceramic van I painted to show it ‘driving’ around. I did this to show the movement of the journey around the Alps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few more photos showing the details of the maps:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also felt adding my stamps of my footprints showed the movement of travelling around.

Lino print of a campsite
24/2/23
Today I hand-cut a lino print inspired by a watercolour painting I made during the painting elective. I started off by drawing the campsite on the lino and cut it out using lino cutting tools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to add more of the Alps in to the background behind the tent. I rolled out blue lino ink and made three prints:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first print didn’t have enough ink, the second was my favourite print as you can clearly see the detail I put into the leaves of the tree but still didn’t have enough ink on the page and the final print had enough ink but lost the detail of the tree.

Making a stamp of a map
24/2/23
Using the techniques I learned from Mondays make making workshop, today I made a stamp of a map. I cut the lines with a lino tool.
Tumblr media
I printed the map six times to create a larger print of a map:
Tumblr media
I also made two prints using pink ink and two with blue to make a multi coloured map:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I compared the colours the first time I stamped them to the second time to see the difference in ink tones :
Tumblr media
After rolling pink ink onto the stamp I noticed that the mark of the print was left on the roller. I rolled it across the page to see what pattern it would create. I think it looks like tire marks or a path. I also did prints with a little bit of blue ink beside it and I also think this looks like tire marks and a pathway.
Tumblr media
In my sketchbook I stamped the map over two train tickets. I also used the stamp I made on Monday of the camper van to stamp onto the train ticket. I think the camper van stamp was the perfect size for the ticket and was interesting how these show a van and train, two modes of transport but both allows movement around the world. I put the van stamp in blue over a pink print of a map to see how the van looked on a journey. I also created a pink background with the roller and ink to stamp the map over it with dark blue. I liked the combination of dark blue and light pink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After printing the camper van with blue ink over the pink map I printed it again to see the map background in the stamp.
Tumblr media
I liked the effect this created as you can see a hint of the paths behind the van. This shows the journey the van is on as it’s driven around Europe.
I also stamped the van at the end of the print I made with the roller. I cut it out because I felt it looked like a road and the van at the end shows the journey taken and the movement down the path.

Paula Scher - Artist Research
23/2/23
Paula Scher is a graphic designer. She has made mant prints, paintings and drawings of maps - enough to fill a whole book! Maps by Paula Scher was published in 2011 by Princeton Architectural Press and the book is full of her map themed pieces.
Growing up she had giant aerial photographic maps all over her basement. She says there were amazing maps of the Rocky Mountains, maps of lakes and rivers in the Northeast, maps of coastlines, and detailed maps of cities. She found them beautiful. Her favourite map of all was an aerial photograph of her childhood neighbour- Oakview, in Silver Spring, Maryland. She could see her whole life in that map, with her house, friends houses, school, the playground and the woods across from her house where she had built her own fort. It seems like that map is a symbol of her childhood and is very important to her.
She writes in her book : “ I began painting maps to invent my own complicated narrative about the way I see and feel about the world. I wanted to list what I know about a place from memory, from impressions, from media, and from general information overload. They are paintings of distortions.”
Here is a painting she made of the map of the world: ‘The World’ (1998)
Tumblr media
She also painted a map of Europe:
‘Europe’ (2000)
Tumblr media
She also made map themed installations such as this:
Tumblr media
What interested me the most was her prints of maps. She printed a map of the United States in many colours such as white, red and blue:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She created these prints in 2007 by screen printing. I found this book in the library and the entire book is rich with amazingly detailed painted and printed maps.

Intaglio printing Workshop
23/2/23
Today I did the intaglio workshop with Cormac. I cut out shapes with different textures to create a tent sitting on top of mountains with clouds in the sky. I cut these shapes to represent my camping experience in the Alps.
Tumblr media
My first attempt got caught in the printing press as the one I used was too tight and not set up for this type of printing. Ink got on the table of the press and as I was cleaning it up, someone stood on my print. This was a happy accident as I’ve been incorporating footprints into this project anyways. I put a page over the ink and put it through the printing press and found the result very interesting. I feel like the lines and footprint to the left of the page shows the movement of the journey to get to the campsite in the alps. On the right of the page you can see the campsite scene with the tent and a cloud in the sky.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My second attempt worked better as I used the right printing press. I printed this pattern three times to show the silhouette, the ghost print and the print showing the different patterns in the materials I used.

Primary research gathered in London
Apart from the Alps, I have recently travelled to London during the summer. Here are some photos I took that I feel are relevant to this project. In the Natural History Museum I saw a map, shells & shell like shapes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also found globes in a shop nearby:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately the following piece had no label as to who designed it. I feel like this would be a interesting idea to make something inspired by these passport stamps in print.
Tumblr media
I even saw a shop called the map house completely inspired by maps!

Hannah Guthrie- Artist Research
21/2/23
Hannah Guthrie is a artist who creates beautiful hand cut lino prints. Here is an example of a lino print she designed, inspired by nature and camping:
Tumblr media
This piece is entitled “Dream” and is a ‘4 by ’4 lino cut print.
The print shows nature and the great outdoors. It reminds me of my travels to the alps as this piece includes a little tent surrounded by nature and mountains in the background. She used black ink and bold lines and marks to capture her design. She describes this piece as ‘a little bit of nature to have always”.
She also did a series of lino prints inspired by things one would find outdoors in nature such as ferns, mushrooms and pinecones:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She created a imaginative piece of a space invasion whilst camping in the Alps. This lino print has a interesting composition with a spaceship in the middle of a nights sky full of stars whilst camping in the woods!

Print workshop- Making stamps
20/2/23
Today I attended the stamp making workshop. Using two squares of lino I cut out the shape of my campervan and of the shoe print my boots make. I also drew a tent on to felt. I glued these on to a block of wood to make three different stamps.
Tumblr media
I started off by using purple ink. I rolled one layer of ink on to each stamp and stamped it across the page to see the Ink fade off it. I then tried stamping in different colours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to use the footprint stamp with many different colours and overlapping the stamps to show the movement of many different people travelling around.
Tumblr media
On a longer page I stamped the footprints in a row to represent a path that someone walked down. My first attempt had the shoes walking off the page but my second go showed walking in a straighter path.

Alice Kellett - Artist research
16/2/23
Tumblr media
Pretty Splitty is run by UK based, international selling artist Alice Kellett who creates original paintings featuring camper vans set within beautiful natural surroundings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her pieces are inspired by her trips to the countryside, being outdoors and one with nature whilst camping in a van. She aims to awoke a sense of adventure with her paintings. She has created many commissioned paintings that feature the van of the buyer. Alice loves van life and she drives a 1984 T25 Hightop. She also uses her van as a art studio when she’s not out on the road.
Tumblr media
This watercolour painting features a van attached to a tent with a beautiful forest background. I would like to make a piece in a similar way depicting my own campsite set up. Our van was full of movement last summer as my family and I travelled around the Alps of Europe.

Painting my ceramic stamp
10/2/23
A couple of weeks ago in ceramics I screen printed a pattern into clay based off a view finder image of a ink drawing I made. I then used mark making schools to stamp circles, shells, lines and dots to make a abstract clay tile in the shape of a stamp. Because stamps travel around the world on letters and can be collected from all different places, I used a plastic tool to make the edges look like a stamp.
Here’s how it looked fired before I started painting:
Tumblr media
I painted wheels, roads, lines representing different paths on a map, shells showing different souvenirs from holidays and a strong green coloured stamp.
Tumblr media
This abstract piece combines my three electives- Ceramics, Printing and Painting as well as shows the mark making skills I learned in ceramics.
