Grand Sawtooth Loop | 8/28/20 | 19 miles | Day 3 Waking up at camp around 7, I packed up and prepared breakfast. Another morning of cold soaked oatmeal with protein powder and instant coffee. The morning hike started out fairly clear but I was struggling with getting going. The trail had stayed lower in elevation than I was hoping and I really just wanted to climb up into the mountains instead of skirting around the outer edges. As mid morning came along, I descended down to the lake shore, where I made a light lunch, and decided to go for a swim in the lake. I made my way to one of the docks on the waters edge, and jumped in, swimming around for a few minutes. After drying off on the dock, I began the climb up and eventually started to make my way up into higher elevations. Grand Sawtooth Loop | 8/27/20 | 16 miles | Day 2 Packing up camp this morning, the weather was overcast but at least it wasn’t raining. The hike for day continues along the outer edge of the Sawtooths, staying lower in elevation than I was hoping but it was a gorgeous section of trail. There were a few ups and downs for the day, but only one really big climb towards the end of my day, where I would then descend down to Redfish Lake. Once I reached the junction down to the lake, I debated if I wanted to make a side trip down to the resort for some food but decided against it and continued on. Grand Sawtooth Loop | 8/26/20 | 14 miles | Day 1 I woke up in Stanley and decided to get some breakfast from the Stanley Cafe before heading out to the trailhead. I had heard from numerous people that the bakery was amazing, and after a breakfast of a chocolate croissant and a breakfast sandwich(with a cowboy cookie saved for later), I am happy to say that it lived up to the hype. The chocolate croissant was the best I’ve ever had. After that, I drive to the trailhead in Grandjean and started the hike. I decided to hike this loop clockwise. The first stretch brought be up Trail Creek and over a crest, where I hiked down towards Alpine Lake. As the day progressed, a few rain showers quickly passed over but luckily they didn’t last too long. White Cloud Peaks Loop | 8/25/20 | 16.3 miles | Day 3 First thing in the morning, I had a climb up and over the next pass as I made my way down to the Chamberlain Lake Basin. On the way down to the lakes, I’m fairly certain I saw a wolf track, and when I got to Lower Chamberlain Lake, there were mountain goats drinking on the far end of the lake. White Cloud Peaks Loop | 8/24/20 | 13.3 miles | Day 2 The next morning was hazy, and visibility wasn’t that great as I packed up camp. Climbing up to the top of Patterson Peak, I began the next stretch of the hike; it was a seven mile off trail section. Going up and over the granite peak meant I had to scramble up the top and slide down the other side on loose talus towards the next lake basin. This was a fairly tiring section of the trail. While navigating this section, I got off trail and had to go back up hill, climbing up a rock face to get back on track. After the off trail section, the rest of the day was on trail, through some gorgeous lakes and creeks. White Cloud Peaks Loop | 8/23/20 | 2.4 Miles | Day 1 I left Portland fairly early Sunday morning, only stopping for gas and a few short breaks until I got to Stanley Idaho, where I got some dinner and then drove off to the trailhead at 4th of July Lake. Arriving at 7:30, I made sure I had everything for the next two days of hiking and set off, reaching an unnamed lake after a quick 2.4 miles. Timberline Trail | 8/18/20 | 24 Miles | Day 2 Waking up at 6, I packed up camp and began the climb out of Elk Cove. I thought this day was going to be a little easier than it turned out to be. As the morning continued to warm up, I made the miles in the morning fairly easily, but by the afternoon, it turned quite hot. I was glad to be able to get out on the Timberline Trail this Summer, it’s a hike I’ve enjoyed doing every year for the past couple of years. Timberline Trail | 8/17/20 | 21 Miles | Day 1 This was the third time I’ve hiked the Timberline Trail and I decided to go counterclockwise, which was a nice change from the other two times. McNeil Point | 7/26/20 | 9.5 Miles On Sunday, a coworker, Angel and I, went on sunrise summit hike of McNeil Point on Mt. Hood. We reached the trailhead at eleven and made the short hike up to the top around 1am, where we cowboy camped underneath a starry sky. Waking up at five, we caught sunrise where we were greeted by a hazy sky. Loowit Trail | Day 2 | 7/21/20 | 10 Miles The second day on trail started early after a night of cowboy camping under the stars. This was the first night of the year that I hadn’t set up my shelter and it was amazing. The stars were out and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. It started to get quite warm early on, so I’m glad that I started the hike early as I climbed around the mountain above tree line. Loowit Trail | Day 1 | 7/20/20 | 20 Miles I was excited to get out on the Loowit Trail after hearing about it earlier in the Spring. I love the Timberline Trail and the Wonderland Trail, so being able to circumnavigate Mt. St. Helens was really exciting. The trail leads you across all different types of terrain. I hiked through forests, giant boulder fields, alpine, sandy mountainside above all vegetation, silty rivers, and lava fields. The trail was hot and exposed and water was scarce but the views were spectacular. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera’s memory card, which I realized about a mile and a half into the hike. Marion Lakes/Mt. Jefferson Wilderness | Day 2 | 18 miles | 6/23/20 • After a restless sleep at Wasco Lake, I made the short hike back up to the PCT and started heading north. I had a few miles to hike on the PCT on this loop. After climbing through a burned area, the trail remained covered in snow for about two miles around Rockpile Lake until South Cinder Peak, where I turned off the PCT and headed back down to Marion Lake. This overnight trip was probably the hardest overnight hike I had done until this point, between the climbing over downed logs for ten miles, two miles of snow, dealing with heat exhaustion and mosquitoes, and acclimating to a higher elevation. Getting back into the routine of hiking has been tough and I definitely need to work on my pacing.
