Maple Rambles - Lego Monkie Kid is not for children

Lego Monkie Kid, despite its cheesiness and playful characteristics- especially in the first season- is not a kid's show. I'd love to go into detail about each traumatizing thing that happens, but I'll keep this brief and simply recap to avoid spoilers.

Lego Monkie Kid gets more terrifying and serious every season, and I can fully understand why a parent would underestimate how serious this show is first glance, and how many people who I've tried to convince to join that fandom also think this show is for kids.

The first movie and season are full of fun little moments with an adventure of the week feel each episode. In the first movie, there's even little foreshadowing where MK checks the age limit for the vehicle he's driving and says "Ages 8 and up? Shouldn't be too hard to drive.". Pretty much, in each episode, MK gets advice from someone he trusts, learns what he has to do to fix whatever issue he's having, and then completes his task and ends the episode learning a new lesson like taking others into consideration. However, towards the end of the season and the second movie "Revenge of the Spider Queen", it begins to set the mood going into darker territory. The next view seasons begin to lean more and more into this, including intense PTSD flashbacks, actual murder, trust issues, and some of the characters are literally nightmare fuel for a child under the age of 10, possibly even 11. We learn more about the Monkey King's dark past and Season Three and Four exhibits breakdowns for some of our favorite characters

While this show can be nice to watch for someone older who just enjoys the childish aspects, this show is absolutely not for children.

and what are your opinions on the writing and the designs? especially the fashion and hero suits also do you think mlb is a super hero girl show or a magical girl show?

I know of it, i watched s1 when it aired a while back and kept up from a distance.

While I’m not a big fan of the writing, I can see the appeal, and from what I’ve heard the movie was pretty cool !

It’d a bit of both, but it feels more like a magical girl show in Paris than a super hero story, in the codes and interests

It’s confusing and not for me but I can see why people like it, a good friend of mine if a BIG fan so I try to keep up with it :)

What do you think of the concept of a Li brother / fourth lotus prince?

I don’t know the logistics of a 4th lotus prince (granted on that front, the fault’s on me, I need to do more research), but I do know that Ne Zha has at least two brothers and two sisters, one of them adopted (i seem to remember a story in JTTW where a demon tries to pass for Ne Zha’s sister, and the twist being that the real actual sister is a baby and can’t be a grown woman so the demon is found out - but it’s been a long time since I’ve read the books so take what i say with a grain of salt)

(and even then I might be saying something silly, the character is so old the number of siblings might depend on the version you’re referring to, so someone smarter than me might be of better help on that).

I don’t know if LMK Ne Zha needs more people in his life, but I am not against the idea of an OC like that, and I don’t think my opinion matters either xD if you want to make one do it it sounds lovely !

TO ALL OF THAT Especially the brothers. Also very curious to his relationship to Erlang now after what little we’ve seen of S4. But I wanna see the brothers or at least a mention of them I feel like it’d be very entertaining to see the little lotus man interacting with other people than Wukong and MK&co !!

I’m also cautiously optimistic, since it’s a monkey show and I’ll be very ok with even just a cameo of Ne Zha, tbh. I love him, i have HCs of how the dynamics could be… but he’s a BG character at best, so I’ll survive if we don’t see him or his brothers :’)

I’d rather they give the spotlight to more narratively important characters (like Red Son, Tang, Pigsy, Sandy) and have him vibing in the background, but I WILL not shut up if we do have a centered episode. Or sequence. Or just a pic.

(Erlang I don’t know since he’s also an well know character from the books and has his own myth, so to me it’s a question of time until we see him in the show and, idem, i have HCs of the dynamics but am waiting to see…)

LMK might not give Nezha the narrative importance he could have and that SUCKS but hear me out. the demon child. the monkie "kid" who might not be the hero he's been made out to be.

the kid born too powerful. the boy made too powerful. the prince who can read and comfort everyone yet ignores his own worries. the successor who can read and comfort everyone but never himself.

the two who are seen as monsters when it was never really their choice. the two who limit their powers, tamper them down or channel them elsewhere so as to avoid mass destruction. the two who live in Wukong's shadow, despite his best intentions.

the two who, at the end of the day, carry the responsibility of protecting everyone, whether they think they can or not.
