★ Main Story | Act 13 - Budding Spring | Chapter 8 - First Theater Experience
*Door creaks open*
Towa: …
Towa: (It’s almost time for it to start, but I wonder if it’s fine for me to come in…)
Izumi: Ah, Towa-kun, welcome. You can go ahead and take a seat over there while you wait.
Towa: Hello…
Boy: Hey, I’m thirsty.
Father: Here’s some water.
Izumi: There’s vending machines in the lobby, so if you want to get anything, now’s the time.
Young Man: Umm, where’s the bathroom…?
Sakuya: It’s that way. I’ll show you!
Towa: (There’s all kinds of people here, from elementary school kids to elderly people…)
Towa: (I wonder if those high school-looking girls and college-age-looking ladies are Spring Troupe fans like me.)
Towa: (It’s kinda a relief that no one here seems like they’re an actor. Everyone looks pretty beginner-ish.)
Izumi: Well, it’s about time. Let’s get things started.
Sakuya: Everyone, please come and gather here~!
Sakuya: Hello! I’m Sakuya Sakuma, the leader of MANKAI Company’s Spring Troupe!
Sakuya: Thank you for participating in today’s beginner’s workshop!
Sakuya: This is our first time doing something like this, so I’m sure there’s some things we’ll kinda have to ease into, but we’ll do our best and we hope you all have fun!
Citron: We will start with a very eggciting backstage tour led by me and Sakuya!
Citron: We are also bringing in some special guests for today, so we hope you look forward to seeing them~!
Sakuya: We’ll start by showing you the part of the stage that can be seen from the best seats in the house! Be sure to watch your step as you make your way up.

Sakuya: Here’s where we always perform for the audience.
Boy: Whoa…!
Towa: Amazing… so this is what it’s like to be on stage.
Sakuya: When you’re actually standing up here, it’s kinda surprising how small the stage is from one end to the other. But since it’s up higher than the audience seats, you can see all the way to the back from up here.
Woman A: So you really can see it from up here.
Citron: We can see all of the audience members!
Sakuya: Akashi-saaan, please go ahead!
Akashi: Okay…
*Stage lights turn on*
Sakuya: This is the stage lighting. It can change the color of the entirety of the stage, and can be used to cast a spotlight on a single person…
*Spotlight turns on*
Towa: !!
Woman B: So hot…!
Citron: It is always hot and shakes us sweat!
Tsuzuru: You mean makes us sweat.
Itaru: You sure letting Citron and Sakuya run this thing is a good idea?
Citron: Just leave it to us!
Sakuya: When a scene is exciting, the light can flicker like this, and when a scene has a slower tone, the lights can become subdued like this…
*Lights flicker and then slow down*
Citron: We can do many performances this way!
Sakuya: Let’s move on to the lighting booth next.

Citron: It is time to introduce one of our special guests!
Sakuya: This is Akashi-san, he does all of our lighting for us.
Akashi: N-Nice to m… you…
Towa: Huh?
Citron: He is a bit shy, but he has instanding lighting skills!
Tsuzuru: You mean outstanding?
Akashi: A-A single light can completely change the atmosphere of a scene… the mood of the stage can completely differ depending on who’s in charge of the lighting…
Sakuya: The mood on stage that Akashi-san creates is always so gentle and warm.
Akashi: T-Thank you…
Towa: (I hadn’t ever really thought about the lighting that much before. Next time I see a play, I’ll pay more attention to it to see how it changes…)
Citron: Next up is the sound booth!

Rento: Yo.
Sakuya: This is Rento-san, he’s in charge of the sound for us!
Rento: Nice to meetcha.
Rento: My job is to do stuff like prepare the music ‘n sound effects used on stage ‘n then make ‘em fit in line with the flow of the play.
Rento: I’m basically a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to sound-related stuff.
Rento: ‘Course, the music’s gotta fit for the scene, ‘n the sound effects can’t be too dull or they’ll take away from the play.
Rento: Not only does that stuff really liven up a scene, but it also pushes the play forward so it doesn’t fall into a lull or anythin’ like that.
Boy: Huh… the music really does get me more excited, now that I think about it.
Towa: (So this is the guy that does the sound effects that go along with the sword fights…)
Sakuya: Even a tiny timing error can disrupt the rhythm of a play, so it’s a pretty tough job.
Citron: Rento’s sounds are always very nice and perfect!
Rento: Thanks much.
Sakuya: Now let’s head to the backstage dressing room~.

Yuki: Hey there.
Azami: Nice to meet you.
Towa: Huh, Azami-kun and Yuki-kun…!?
Sakuya: These guys are Yuki-kun, the one in charge of our costumes, and Azami-kun, the one in charge of our makeup!
Woman A: I didn’t think we’d get to meet anyone from a troupe other than Spring Troupe…!
Woman B: Same here!
Yuki: I’ve been in charge of costumes for every performance since the Newborn Spring Troupe’s first play, RomiJuli.
Yuki: I create the designs based on the plots of Tsuzuru’s scripts, and then from there, I draw up the patterns, which you can kind of think of like being the blueprints for costumes…
Yuki: Then I buy the fabric and get to sewing.
Yuki: I make designs that not only fit the image of the role but ones that’ll also look good on stage and are easy to move in.
Woman A: Do you make everything all by yourself?
Yuki: Generally speaking. It’s easier for me to get a solid idea that way. But sometimes I have Taichi or the others help me with some of the smaller details.
Towa: Amazing…!
Azami: And I’m in charge of plannin’ out the makeup to match the roles and costumes and also doin’ everyone’s makeup before each performance.
Sakuya: We used to do our makeup ourselves before Azami-kun was put in charge of it, so it’s a little funny to see how our makeup skills compare to his.
Citron: The impact it has on our faces is totally different~!

Sakuya: Well then, that concludes our backstage tour. Now it’s time for everyone to try their hand at acting!
Itaru: The theme this time is “Enjoying your first theater experience”.
Tsuzuru: You don’t have to worry about any special techniques or skills, we just want you to experience what it’s like to perform.
Izumi: We’ll now pass out the scripts~.
Tsuzuru: The script is actually an excerpt from the Spring Troupe play “Romeo and Julius”.
Tsuzuru: We thought it’d be one that’s easy to act out since Romeo and Juliet is a pretty famous work.
Itaru: And because at the time of Spring Troupe’s first performance, all of us were just beginners.
Towa: (“Romeo and Julius”… Masumi-kun’s Julius is so cool.)
Towa: (I can’t believe he was just a beginner when he first performed as him.)
Tsuzuru: Alright then, we’re gonna split you guys into six teams now and decide on the casting. We already planned out how we’re gonna split you into teams, so we’ll tell you which team you're on now.
Towa: (I wonder what role I’m gonna get!)

Masumi: I’m in charge of your guys’ team.
Towa: (I must be some kinda oshi magnet or something…! No, could he possibly be doing this out of all the care and consideration and kindness in his heart…!?)

Masumi: For the casting… do any of you have any preferences?
Towa: --.
Towa: (My luck’s been good so far, so I’ve gotta go for it…!)
Towa: I wanna play Julius!
Masumi: Anyone else want Julius?
Masumi: …Okay, you’ll be Julius. Anyone else have a preference?
Young Man: Ah, well, I’d like--.
Masumi: What role do you want?
Young Man: Umm… someone with fewer lines would probably be better… but…
Masumi: You’re going to be switching roles around anyway, so just pick who you want.
Young Man: T-Then, Romeo.
Masumi: If no one else has any preferences, I’ll just decide for the rest of you.

Young Man: “Umm, let’s go on a journey together, Julius. We can leave behind this cramped town and travel the world.”
Towa: “Romeo, you’ve got brawn, and I’ve got the brains. If it’s the two of us together-- then we can surely do anything.”
Towa: “Right, together we can go anyw--.”
Young Man: Ah, sorry…
Towa: No, no, it’s my fault, I completely screwed that up!
Towa: (This is the worst. That wasn’t anything like Masumi-kun’s Julius at all. What I did wasn’t even close to Julius.)
Towa: (Embarrassing myself in front of Masumi-kun, I would’ve been better off just being publicly executed instead.)
Towa: Sorry, maybe it’d be better for me to switch with someone…
Young Man: Then I should also…
Masumi: That’s just how everyone is at first. It was the same for me and Sakuya too.
Masumi: Try switching your roles.
Young Man: Huh?
Towa: W-Will that really work…?
Masumi: Read Romeo’s lines from the scene we’re on right now.
Towa: “Let's go on a journey together, Julius. We can leave behind this cramped town and travel the world.”
Young Man: “Romeo, you’ve got brawn, and I’ve got the brains. If it’s the two of us together, then we can surely do anything.”
Towa: “Right, together we can go anywhere.”
Towa: (Huh? The lines somehow came out more naturally than they did before…)
Towa: (It feels good to say the lines like that…)
Young Man: Huh…
Towa: I did it somehow…?
Young Man: Me too…
Towa: You’re amazing, Masumi-kun!
Masumi: It was just because those roles fit you more.
Towa: (My heart is still pounding… I wonder what this feeling is… I feel like I can’t stop the urge to keep acting.)

Tsuzuru: …Ughh, this one’s not… and this one’s too boring…
Tsuzuru: (I know they said the performance is gonna be the way it always is, but how am I supposed to not have that in the back of my mind?)
Tsuzuru: (Just what kinda script will give us a surefire shot at being nominated…?)
Tsuzuru: (Not only do we need to gain new fans, but we need to keep the fans we have now too…)
Citron: …
Tsuzuru: Aghhh, I got nothing…
Citron: Tsuzuru! It is time for our strategy meeting!
Tsuzuru: !? Ah, gotcha.

Izumi: I do get why you’re worried, Tsuzuru-kun.
Izumi: The burden we’re all carrying is different from what we’re used to, so I’m sure you don’t even know where to start with picking a theme.
Masumi: Not only the theme, but we’ve got to figure out the lead and co-lead too.
Chikage: So a theme and casting that’ll bring in more votes for us, huh…
Tsuzuru: Thinking about it like that makes me feel even more overwhelmed.
Citron: This is the age of core between fractions without the blood and tears!
Tsuzuru: …
Citron: Tsuzuru, you do not even have the strength to correct me!?
Itaru: It’s score between traction, right?
Citron: It is war between factions! Even Itaru is going crazy!
Chikage: Regardless, the pressure that’s being put on Tsuzuru is immense.
Tsuzuru: I was completely absorbed in writing during our first performance, so this is an entirely different kinda pressure than it was back then.
Tsuzuru: And even though the act-off with the First Generation was really hard, at least our opponent was clear, but with this, it’s just…
Chikage: Our opponents this time are every other theater company and the general public who’ll be voting. There’s just too many opponents, so there’s no way to know what the right answer is.
Tsuzuru: Assuming there even is a right answer, to begin with…
Itaru: You’ve got a point.
Sakuya: At the end of the day, all we can do is go back to just trying to do our best to perform.
Itaru: That said, it’s hard to tell exactly what our best is.
Tsuzuru: You’re right about that…
Masumi: What even is a play that’s like our Spring Troupe?
Chikage: Like us, huh?
Sakuya: What kinda play would that be…?
Izumi: …
Izumi: Let’s do the event.
Sakuya: Huh?
Izumi: The workshop for beginners we put on hold.
Izumi: How about you try remembering what you’re doing this for, going back to your origin, and trying to just enjoy theater with people who are doing it for the first time?
Sakuya: Remembering what we’re doing this for…
Sakuya: …So like, remembering how fun it was to be on stage for the first time, and finally feeling like you had a place to belong.
Tsuzuru: Yeah, that might actually work.
Tsuzuru: I want others to feel the excitement I felt when I first stood on stage.
Sakuya: Exactly. I want others to know just how interesting theater really is.
Itaru: There are some things you don’t realize until you actually do something for yourself.
Chikage: So seeing the participants experience things like that to help us remember how we felt in the past, huh…
Citron: Now it is time for us to go back to our fruits!
Tsuzuru: You mean roots?
Citron: Tsuzuru is finally back!
Itaru: I think it’ll be good for us to try new things within our skill range.
Masumi: I want to try it.
Izumi: Alright, it’s decided! I’ll let Kazunari-kun know.

Izumi: No, I think it’s just a coincidence.
Masumi: Can’t believe we ran into this annoying guy again…
Izumi: Do you work here part-time?
Towa: This is my aunt’s shop, I’m staying here with her.
Izumi: I see.
Izumi: Ah, right-- we just printed these flyers, if you’d like to take a look at one.

Izumi: You said that you have yet to see a play live, and maybe I’m being a bit presumptuous here, but…
Izumi: This is an event we came up with after talking to you, Towa-kun.
Izumi: It’d be an opportunity for you to get to know even more of the charm of theater and Spring Troupe, we’d love for you to come.

Hisoka: …But this is just the pre-thing.
Sakyo: Right. This doesn’t affect the final verdict. It’s only a temporary poll.
Kazunari: Exactly! Aah, we got way too worked up!
Taichi: If we do our best during the real thing, we’ll totally be able to make up for it, right!?
Misumi: We still have a whole year~. Let’s do our best~!
Yuki: …Still, the fact is that our votes didn’t go up with there being so many other troupes competing.
Chikage: Taking a quick look at the rankings, you can really see that the influence of well-known celebrities and influencers really gave them a strong start.
Chikage: I’d say that this was an unfair fight, given the conditions were that only social media voting would count for this.
Sakyo: Even so, SNS Votes are still part of the main competition, so I don’t think we can necessarily say the playing field is going to change drastically.
Sakyo: If we’re currently seventieth, I doubt we’ll be able to move up to the top ten just in the first quarter…
Izumi: Then what are we going to do…?
Itaru: Considering the Newborn Fleur Award only just dropped, it’s not like we’ve got any wikis to browse for strats…
Itaru: And we still don’t have a clue how much of an impact Theater Votes are going to have.
Homare: All we know for now is that… it’s of the utmost importance that we move up the ranks in each of the four rounds of voting between the first and fourth quarters.
Omi: We have four total chances, so we have to be sure to take them all.
Azuma: We don’t have to jump up the rankings all in one go, we just need to gradually make our way up to at least tenth place.
Tsuzuru: Four rounds, huh… should we do performances that’ll stand out and be talked about as much as possible?
Sakyo: No, wouldn’t it be better to stick with keeping each troupe’s performance in MANKAI Company’s style, as opposed to doing something unconventional?
Tasuku: That’s true, the most important thing is making sure that the fans who usually come to our theater are satisfied.
Tsumugi: I think prioritizing getting Theater Votes is the way to go. Each one of those counts for one more point than the SNS Votes do.
Tenma: All we’ve got to do is continue on like we’ve been doing and give the audience the best performances we can…
Masumi: We don’t need to change what we’ve been doing.
Tsumugi: Right. We just need to keep putting on good plays. Just like we always have.
Misumi: Yeah, yeah! None of it matters if all you care about is the rankings~!
Muku: You’re right… I have to do what I can.
Juza: Yea. We’ve been steadily gainin’ experience and growin’ as actors. Even if it’s kinda crude, ‘s’all we can do.
Banri: So that means we’ll just be doin’ our usual performances, right?
Homare: For our usual performances, Spring Troupe’s performance is up next, correct?
Tsuzuru: Kinda nervous having us start out like this… If we screw up here…
Itaru: It’s a little terrifying to think about how we’ll be affecting things in the long run.
Citron: There is no need to worry! We just have to put on a Spring Troupe play like we always do!
Sakuya: Yeah. We were like this during our first performance, but if we hadn’t pushed on, we never would’ve been able to connect with Summer Troupe.
Tenma: Exactly. Summer Troupe wouldn’t have existed if it wasn’t for Spring Troupe’s performance. You guys can definitely do this.
Tsuzuru: Right, we have to do this…
Citron: If we could do it back then, then we can also do it now. We can be sure of that!
Chikage: I’ll do my best, too.
Sakuya: We’ve got more experience than we did back then, and we’ve got six people now, too. I’m sure we’ll be just fine.
Banri: ‘Course, we’ll be supportin’ you guys, too.
Tsumugi: Let’s all do our best to work all the way through the fourth quarter.

shiki: It’s really disappointing the way things turned out with this. Social media really just does have a huge influence, doesn’t it?
momo: Winning just cuz you’ve got big social media presence is so not fair
Iv: i mean, tru, but it fits the era and it’s still a good thing, there’s tons of fans who wanna see their oshis but can’t actually go to the theaters, y’know?
Kar: I mean, this is probably what got some people into theater, so it’s just a matter of strategy, ain’t it? Dunno, that’s just what I think

momo: Hmm, it’s fine. I don’t think the troupe members would be happy with votes gotten like that, promoing the performances would be fine tho. Thanks

momo: IKR? All of their fans have said they’re gonna vote for them, so it’s time to show them our power. We’ll be so so so fine

Kazunari: Ah, there’s another notice on the theater forums about the launch of a new troupe.
Tsumugi: There’s more on the bulletin board on Veludo Way too. Usually, there’s only one or two of them, but there were about ten last I checked.
Tasuku: There’s a lot of recruitment for new members going on too. And a lot of troupes that went dormant have come out of hiding again.
Banri: I mean, with anyone bein’ able to enter and a fuck-ton of prize money like that, who wouldn’t think of givin’ it another shot?
Sakuya: And with live streams of performances counting for votes, it gives non-local troupes a chance too.
Sakyo: Even though the Board of Directors used to go around to different regions, it was still just limited to well-known theater companies.
Taichi: Student theater groups from famous colleges have announced that they’re gonna participate, and I’ve heard that performers and influencers are announcing the launch of new theater companies too.
Yuki: Theater companies started like that are bound to get a lot of SNS Votes.
Citron: We are truly entering the age of core between the theater fractions!
Tsuzuru: Are you trying to say “war between the theater factions”?
Omi: It’s just like what Yukio-san said at the press conference, it really is bringing life to the theater world.
Izumi: It’s really starting to feel like the new Fleur Award has actually been put into motion.
Homare: The flow of change is necessary to keep the waters from clouding. Too strong of a flow, however, would leave us in a calamity.
Muku: A calamity…!?
Kumon: What are we gonna do if everything goes downhill…!?
Sakyo: Up until this point, the limited number of theater companies meant we all had to compete to catch the attention of the Board of Directors, but now with this, we’re going to need to change the way we fight drastically.
Azami: Maybe we need to start thinkin’ up a new game plan.
Itaru: The OGs, like GOD-za, Hyakka, and Yuzo-san’s troupe, don’t seem like they’re pulling out any special moves towards the Newborn Fleur Award, though.
Itaru: They’ve pretty much just been seeking out votes online.
Chikage: I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see.
Guy: With all that said, the votes cast online during the pre-voting period do not affect the final election. It would be better to just remain calm and observe what’s happening around us, would it not?
Azuma: Right, if we don’t plan our strategy carefully, we won’t be able to make any moves even if we want to.
Izumi: That’s true…
Kazunari: Director-chan, what’s going on with that Spring Troupe workshop you were planning?
Izumi: A-Ah, right, that!
Sakyo: I don’t think that’ll do much for us given the current situation.

Izumi: Well, I mean, you can’t help but wonder.
Izumi: (Today’s finally the day they announce the pre-voting results… even though it’s not going to affect the real thing, my stomach’s in knots just thinking about it…)

Chikage: Made it just in time for the announcement.
Homare: Seems like we’ve all managed to wander in here, one way or another.

The costumes have leveled up and the lives and circumstances of the actors have changed…
That made me happy, yet somewhat lonely, but when I actually tried playing my role, I was relieved and thought, “Man, you haven’t changed at all.”
It’s kinda like what it’s like seeing old friends after a long time.
