Re:Zero has to be one of my favorite isekai openings just for the sheer absurdity of it. Or rather, the lack of absurdity. Instead of death by truck or summoned by a god in some flashy way, Subaru just fucking blinks and he's in the world. No ceremony, no fanfare, no tragedy, nothing. The series really just went, "Welcome to the new world. Have fun."

I've been rereading Monster this past week, and I've gained a further appreciation of the story. Specifically for Tenma.

Usually, I'm not all that interested in the relentlessly optimistic characters usually because it comes at the cost of common sense. Like someone on the run trying to save a person despite all odds being stacked against them and at the risk of them getting caught. But while Tenma is like that, it kinda makes me like him more. Face it. The story of Monster is a rather nihilistic one considering the setting and all the bad things that happen in it. Johan is definitely a contributor to that sort of thing. However, Tenma serves as the rebuttal to Monster's bleak world. He shines a light on just about everyone he spends a good amount of time with and he does everything in his power to bring out the best in people.

And while he doesn't want to kill Johan, he has seen how resistant to change he is and dedicates his life to fining and eradicating the monster he brought back. He hesitates not because of his idealism, but because he can't stomach the idea of hurting or killing someone. Despite how he sees all lives as equal, he knows that Johan can't live while spreading so much death and destruction. But if he does, he'll prove Johan right and lose that rebuttal. He sees it as a necessary evil throughout the manga and he knows what it means if he does this. And he's not even looking to clear his name. He just wants to help as many people as possible, even if that means killing a man. Meaning even this decision is rooted in optimism.

I'll admit that I'm a bit of a cynic, so it can be hard to see people as a collective as good. But Tenma is such a good guy that it gives me hope for people. I know there will always be bad people, but if more people like Tenma existed, the world can still be a little bit brighter.

Basically, this is just a Kenzo Tenma appreciation post. He deserves the world and then some.

Someone who managed to mastermind the deaths of three people and almost got to six if she had her way.

Someone able to wrap people around her finger to do her bidding and keep them from giving her away.

And a really shitty liar.

Really, the only reason she got past one round of testimony was that everyone in the court other than the defense was simping over her and the prosecution was trying to cover for her blatant fuckups to win. She's as bad as Frank Sahwit at lying. Once she loses her charms, she's lost what makes her especially dangerous.

Then again, shitty liars can still be very dangerous in real life, so it's not like it's holding her back otherwise.
