If you’ve ever tried to draw a perspective grid by hand, you know that it totally sucks butts. Here’s a quick and easy way that I use that lets me establish the basic perspective of my drawing in less than 30 seconds. This is the first 3 pages of the tutorial, and the rest of it is available on my Patreon!

Here’s a cool resource for you, guys!
Do you know when you need to paint skulls, vehicles or some object full of crevices and details that change and get obscured by different angles? It can be hard to find good references, sometimes you need to learn how it looks from unusual angles like the underside, but no one take photos of the underside.
Well, the folk at Sketchfab do. It’s a project that has been running for a while, and wow, it has grown since I last checked it! Some incredibly kind museums joined and are sharing 3D scans of their collections, to not speak of the high quality scans of almost anything by regular users. You’ll also find original 3D models there. It’s amazing, a wealth in information at your fingertips, almost as if you had the object in your hands. Enjoy!
Bem, o pessoal do Sketchfab tira.

Orcs aren’t known for their great cuisine. Orcs prefer foods that are readily available (whatever can be had by raiding), and portable with little preparation, though they have a few racial delicacies. Toughs strips of lean meat, bones scavenged from recent kills, and dark coarse bread make up the bulk of common orc rations.Fire roasted rothe femur (marrow is a rare treat) [beef femur], Strips of dried meat (of unknown origin) [homemade goose jerky], foraged nuts, only edible by orcs….nut cracker tusks [brazil nuts], coarse black bread, made with whatever grains can be pillaged [black sesame bread], Pungent peppers [Habanero peppers stuffed with smoked fish and olives].

Layout Background Exercise
For Gobelins’ entering contest, one of the request is background skills, and the ability, with a pen, to visualize yourself in a 3D space.
So I gaved myself an exercice than can be similar to what you can have during the contest, and which are the steps I’m going through :
Tumblr media
Here is a background concept done by Armand Serrano, for the movie Lilo and Stitch.
Let’s put the following consign : try to draw the “against field” of this place (it mean, as in cinema, shooting in the opposite direction to another shot)
For this, we must be aware to : - Place our virtual camera correctly - respect perspective rules -placing correctly our objects in the space (what does make the “link” between the two shots) - Keep a cool composition -respect the design -use our imagination to field the empty space
So, let’s do this !
1. Making a Map and a good thumbnail
-It’s a good exercise to try put everything in a map, including the camera (CAM1) and visualize what we know and what we have to imagine ; not very easy, but it’s making win a lot of time for after !
- Then I just had to place the other camera (CAM2) on the other side, and begin to think about what would be in the room on the other side.
Tumblr media
- When I did the map, I was working in the same time with a thumbnail of my scene (note : thumbnail is a very small drawing. Good to remember : small drawings for big ideas ! ) ; like this I could think about having a cool composition and match with the background in the same time. That’s why (as you might see) I decided to tilt a bit my CAM2, because I felt it more interesting for the composition.
2. Ruff drawing
- So here begin the interesting part :) it’s importent to begin by placing the horizon line, the vanishing points (in this case, two) and a perspective grid, all of this being sure it’s mathching with your thumbnail.
-Then, I built every objects, being sure it’s on the perspective, and puting all my ideas.
note : I was always thinking : this is a place where people are living, we have to FEEL It. It’s passing by using the props and the randomness of their position to suggest this idea.
Tumblr media
3. Line Up
- On this part I was always trying to be careful about keeping the style of the artist, about props design, and the way of working the line.
Tumblr media
4. (Bonus) Shadows
- Personnaly, I wanted to try making she shadows on a traditionnal way, as they where doing before at Disney. For this I first scanned my drawing (to have a backup in case), then I used carbon powder, I was putting stronger at some places, using an eraser to have my lights, and my pencil to go into the detail in the lighting.
-It’s important, when doing lighting, to know where the light come from, and what you want to show. Contrast is the master word ; with the light and shadow, you can choose to show more one thing than an other (for example, I chosen to show less the left part, and put on the light the right part)
Tumblr media
My drawing could be better, about the choice of props and the angle, but I hope this tutorial helped you to see better the process to draw an “against field” from an existing layout, hope you enjoyed :)
Be free to comment, cheers !

hello! I'm a current Art Center student and would like to know how to make a character design portfolio to apply for internships, mentorships or possible jobs? Is there some type of guideline I should follow, such as do I have to pick an existing story and re-design characters? I've looked up to you for years now and all I can say is that you're amazing!
Hello!  First off, thank you so much!
Secondly, I’ll shove a link to my “portfolios” tag your way, because there might be extra things in there that you’ll find helpful:
Portfolios
To address some of the things you specifically asked: no, there’s no set structure to what a character design portfolio should look like.  You can have original characters or ones based off of existing stories.  I wouldn’t recommend straight fanart, because you’re trying to showcase your own abilities, but doing something like an animated take on a live action property, like Stranger Things, could be an interesting stylization exercise for an image or two.
Here’s the most important thing to understand about character design: it is not about making cool characters; it is about designing characters that help tell a story.  The reason portfolios that feature a number of characters from the same story feel effective is because the portfolio’s viewer isn’t seeing the designs in a vacuum.  That viewer is getting to see how the designs play off each other and how they convey the purposes of the story.  That’s ultimately the job, so a portfolio that highlights that is already on the right path.
This isn’t to say that everything in your portfolio has to be furthering one concept, but I would argue that whatever you’re putting in there SHOULD convey characters with distinct personalities that make people want to know more.  To give you a non-vague example of this: any of my recent Inktobers would probably fall into this category.  I never revisit these characters in other pieces, but 1) there’s more than one character in each image, so you get a taste of purposeful design variation, and 2) the interaction of these characters gives you a sense of story between them.
To that point, here’s the second most important thing about character design: they’re characters, so they should have personality.  People get very hung up on the design angle (which is without a doubt important), but they often forget that the designs are there to support character personalities.  So as you make your portfolio, look for ways for your characters to feel engaging, whether that’s with posing, expressions, or how they interact with one another.  These kinds of things make the character feel alive.
Finally, and this is a not-so-secret secret-weapon: show you can draw the same character repeatedly and from different angles.  I’m not saying shove in straight-up turnarounds left and right (though an example somewhere in there might not be the worst thing).  But if while you’re showcasing character personality with posing and expressions you also happen to draw that same character doing multiple poses or multiple expressions, now you’re standing out.  It seems obvious to do this, but you’d be amazed how often I’ve heard that amazing artists were passed up for jobs because the bosses didn’t think the artists could rotate a character.  Those artists could do incredible one-off designs, but couldn’t put the designs through their paces.  As the designers, we have to explain the WHOLE character to others, so this is a pretty key ability.
I hope this helps, and best of luck to you!

This girl is Hope.
Her life was more-or-less average, until she unwittingly opened a mysterious jar containing the apocalypse. To prevent the Earth’s destruction, Hope shoved her arm into the jar. This stopped the calamity, but the jar reshaped around her hand, becoming a glove with immense and terrible power.
Now that a doomsday device had been activated, all the other apocalyptic powers-that-be began rushing to see who could destroy humanity first.
The one person standing in their way -
is a girl with the end of the world in her hand.
