’[The film’s] Los Angeles is a clever amalgam of locations in the real LA and in the Pudong business district of Shanghai, famous for its futuristic skyscrapers and raised walkways. … [KK Barrett, Production Designer] says he had a lot of questions when he first read [Spike] Jonze’s script because it lacked “visual exactness. So we collaged buildings together—we found buildings we liked—Pudong had the best visuals we could find—and it didn’t matter that it was China. We selectively edited our collection of buildings into our film to make our new world—and we took out things we didn’t want to show. And it becomes a new whole.”’ (Curbed)
️THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT IN MEDIA (🧱) HER (2013), dir. Spike Jonze — and the design of near-future Los Angeles

The exclusive clip gives a sneak peak into the pseudo–dad and kid relationship. The two play some version of 21 questions and Johnny does a lot of avoiding, well, the questions. “Why are you alone?” young Jesse asks, to which his uncle responds with, “Who cares? Blah, blah, blah.” The young boy strikes again. “Did you tell my mom to leave my dad when he first got sick?” he asks. When Johnny replies with, “I told her to take care of herself,” it’s the young boy’s turn to go, “Blah, blah, blah.” The apple never falls too far from the tree.
