Trying my hand at embroidery... It’s actually pretty fun, but then again, I love tedium.

Faerie Folk. Watercolor and graphite on BFK Reeves. 3”x 3” each. This was my first series of Faerie Folk. I used images of real people from around the world and morphed them into different types of Fae while still trying to keep the character of the original portraits.

A Little Book of the Odd and Uncomfortable. This was a small project I did last year towards the end of December. The focus is on deformity and the illustrations are made with graphite wash, watercolor, and ink. I also used wood stain in a couple of the images for a sepia effect. All in all, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! I will be working on more miniature books like this, putting them in small tins and matchbox size bindings. I love this format and I hope to explore making more three dimensional books in the future.

Hello, Tumblr. I decided I needed to put my work out there more and try to get some exposure. My name is Jerico Walls and I’m an artist living in Chicago, Illinois. Nice to meet you. In my work I like to explore storytelling and mythology through portraiture. I have always been inspired by Pre-Christian, Celtic and Norse folklore for its complexity and variety of creatures. I am also interested in how these mythologies have shaped other beliefs and traditions throughout history and the world. I work primarily with graphite and watercolor, creating soft washes and subtle color contrasts in order to sculpt out the planes of faces and figures. I also use a variety of marks to create textures and atmospheric ‘special effects ‘. My work is mostly done in miniature, inviting viewer to come within an intimate range in order to engage it. Each piece has a narrative implied by the figure and composition. Though the narrative is initially my design I accept and expect it to change according to the viewer. I am attempting to create my own mythological grimoire wherein my creatures and characters can spread their own tales and influences. I hope to spark or rekindle feelings of wonderment, nostalgia, curiosity and whimsy.
