Why is it complaining about the writing petty? That's funny. No one's saying that the show was awful, but that the writing in season 5 wasn't at its best, actually it was far from it.
Making Michael come back from the dead was a huge mistake, and it was so poorly written that it made Rafael go back to his toxic behaviors, it made Jane seem selfish (towards both men) and I don't even have to say how badly they treated Michael himself. Also, every character treated him like he was a burden just for being alive.
But when the writers went out of their way to make Jane and Rafel's love story "better" than Jane and Michael's, it felt phony and unnecessary.
Yes, it is a telenovela but that's no excuse for bad writing!! Man, this show was nominated for it's writing in 2015! It was outstanding at that time, it won a Golden Globe for Gina Rodriguez for christsake! Why is it so terrible to expect the writing to be as good as it was in the first 2 seasons?

Say whatever you want about Michael, he wasn't perfect, he had his lowest points in the first season when he was lying, being selfish and a little bit immature too.
Michael had to lose Jane to understand what she needed, and how he could be in her life. Michael never stopped believing they belonged together though, and he was right.
As a character, Michael grew a lot which is something Rafael failed to do till the very last season he was the same entitled, insecure and immature little man he was in S1.
