American Sonnet for My Past and Future Assassin [“I lock you in an American sonnet that is part prison”]
I lock you in an American sonnet that is part prison, Part panic closet, a little room in a house set aflame. I lock you in a form that is part music box, part meat Grinder to separate the song of the bird from the bone. I lock your persona in a dream-inducing sleeper hold While your better selves watch from the bleachers. I make you both gym & crow here. As the crow You undergo a beautiful catharsis trapped one night In the shadows of the gym. As the gym, the feel of crow-Shit dropping to your floors is not unlike the stars Falling from the pep rally posters on your walls. I make you a box of darkness with a bird in its heart. Voltas of acoustics, instinct & metaphor. It is not enough To love you. It is not enough to want you destroyed.

On my view, the most basic and enduring question of philosophy is: “What should we do?” Or perhaps better “What should we do now?”—given our current state of history, and our current situation of knowledge, technology, environment, preferences and needs? Seeing philosophy in this practical, normative light fits quite naturally with work in other areas of philosophy: work in ethics of course addresses questions of how we should live and act, work in political philosophy addresses questions of what form of government, what voting system, what distribution of goods, etc. we should have. Questions of epistemology and logic are easily brought under this heading, too, as asking how we should work to acquire knowledge, and how we should reason (perhaps allowing differences in various domains of inquiry).

But actually a value statement is nothing else than a command in a misleading grammatical form. It may have effects upon the actions of men, and these effects may either be in accordance with our wishes or not; but it is neither true nor false. It does not assert anything and can neither be proved nor disproved.

Homer was wrong in saying, “Would that strife might perish from among gods and humans.” For if that were to occur, all things would cease to exist.
