April: As chief of staff, I feel like I should tell you that two of the radiologists are currently discussing having what I can only describe as a 'bare knuckle fight' behind the hospital.

He chuckled. “Hey, these puppets would give you nightmares too,” He defended. “Cows?” He asked, he shook his head. “Guess we were both weird kids then, huh?” Doctors were usually were weird, they did love science after all. “Did they come inside to your room and moo at you?” He teased, getting revenge for when she teased him about his puppet nightmares. “No, I think it’s..” He tried to rack his brain to think of another person. “Ryleigh? The peds nurse, they are always hanging out. “ He couldn’t reveal the secret, he promised Levi. He pulled up to the counter. “Any last minute items you want before we blow half of our paychecks?”

Kepner couldn’t help but laugh as she recalled the noises of the cows that had lead to have her having nightmares into her early teen years. “I can’t even remember what they were doing in the dreams. But we moved farms around that time and the shed where we milked the cows was clearly right under my bedroom window. I think the noises of them in there just seeped into my dreams and had me on edge for longer than I would care to admit.” She chuckled, thankful that at least Seattle didn’t have the same issues. “Oh Ryleigh would make sense. I’ve seen them together a few times, I really like her. Good for Levi.” She said with a nod, her eyes sifting through the basket in front of them. “I don’t think I could afford to get anything else this time.”

“No, no I don’t.  Because I can’t Apes, okay?” Lexie whispered.  “I can’t do half the damn things I need to do because I can’t stop….I can’t….”  Lexie took the flashcards and took a breath.  She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear.   She flipped through the flashcards and found the first case she wanted, beginning to quiz April.  This she could do.  

“Lexie - it’ll be okay.” The redhead assured the other, her hand coming across the table to squeeze that of the others in an attempt to be comforting. She didn’t know exactly how the other felt, but she could at least try and be there for her friend in her hour of need. “They’ll get over it, you’ll get over it, and before you know it they’ll be some hot new attending walking around the place with your name on it.”

Teddy resisted the urge to pump her fist as April relent and gave up a couple more fries, it would almost definitely ruin her sad puppy dog vibe. However, she would agree that she would be just as generous if the roles were reversed…it might have taken the same amount of persuasion though. She was almost tempted to take her up on the offer, with every intention of adding April to the OR anyway, but she decided that would just be mean. “I’d go for a quarter.” Half was mean, but twenty-five percent seemed like a fair trade. She was starving. “Not yet,” She confirmed with a nod, and not believing that today would be the day she did. “Well that depends. If it goes well and we heal up the hole in nine year old’s left chamber, then you’re allowed to be very excited. She’s had it since birth and we were hoping it would close over, but scans show that it’s grown considerably in the last year so we’re patching it up and hoping we don’t have to put her on the transplant list.”

April rolled her eyes, pushing her plate towards the attending. She didn’t mind sharing really, but with the amount of people that always came around stealing her food, she had to show that she was putting at least some sort of fight, lest they just come and take it from her regardless. “Take whatever you want to.” She flashed the other a grin, her grumpiness from her earlier day slowly lifting at the prospect of having a surgery to go into with Altman in the afternoon. She had a lot of time and admiration for the other, and she wasn’t going to lose that over a few fries if that was all it took to get on the surgery with her. “Wow nine?” she asked. That was a long time to be walking around with a hole in the heart - she wasn’t going to specialise in cardio and even Kepner could tell you that much. “Well it’ll be an honor to watch you rectify that, and I suppose we can only hope that the transplant list just because a final final option.”

He nodded his head and took a breath when she asked if they should go.  Levi offered her his arm, hoping it would be an appropriately romantic gesture and not freak her out.  Hell, she was probably regretting saying yes.  “Glad you like the flowers,” he commented.  “How was your day?” Levi asked, knowing he would have to make every attempt at a normal conversation for the rest of the evening.  She didn’t think this was a date.  She didn’t want to go on a date with him.  

April felt slightly uneasy about misreading the whole evening - had she really been so stupid to assume it was the same kind of dinner she attended with any number of her colleagues? That, and it wasn’t like any of them ever asked her to go on dates with them either, so it was entirely unprecedented for the redhead. Nevertheless, she had promised him an evening and dinner, and she always made good on her promises. “It was... busy. This huge trauma came in and we had to try and plug bullet holes while cardio tried to not let the guy on the table it was all hands on deck.” She explained with a laugh, attempting to lighten the tension that seemed to have come over the both of them. “How was yours, Levi?”

“Made me have nightmares about those puppets coming alive, so no.” He said with a chuckle. “Well, based off of my psych rotation in med school, it was, but still. Puppets for a 12 year old?” He shook his head in disapproval. “I should, but I don’t want to come off as the jealous type, because I know I have no competition with him.” He knew it was kind of mean to say, but Levi as Levi. “Yeah, who do you think he likes?” He asked, not wanting to give it away. 

"Aw little Deluca had some nightmares about puppets?” April asked, her tone teasing him as she learned more about him. “Sorry, teasing you about the therapy received probably wasn’t the nicest thing I could have done.” She quickly corrected herself, feeling bad for jumping to the comments as soon as she did. “If it makes you feel better when I was that age I had nightmares about the cows on the farm. It was... disturbing.” She added with a small laugh, the noises that came from their enclosure causing more damage than she’d realised at the young age. “I don’t know? I don’t really know him well enough to know who it might like. It’s not Sam is it?”

"I knew it, I knew it! You have to tell me now, who were you in there with? Nobody comes out of an oncall room that satisfied without having been in there with someone else. Dish.”

“can’t you listen to me?” (from charlotte)

"I’m trying but I’ve clearly messed up somewhere if this paper work isn’t done right, and I don’t know what to do to change it. What could you say that won’t make me feel even worse about this? I’m sorry, Charlotte.”

“alright, i’ll leave you alone.” (from alyiah)

"Alyiah, wait.” Kepner paused, pointing to the stack of medical journals beside her. “How quickly can you read through these? If you can help me out I’ll try and convince Hunt to let you scrub on in this weird surgery nobody seems to have done before too.”

"Gee thanks for those pearls of wisdom. There’s nothing more you can give me other than life sucks?”

“alright, i’ll leave you alone.”

"No wait don’t! Please Cristina, I need all the help I can get and if that means I need to grovel to you, then I am not above grovelling.”
