How does long distance communication work in W101?
The crystal ball is one of the oldest and most common form of communication amongst wizards. Ambrose is often seen using it to keep track of his more "long distance" students.
"Professors, keep a sharp eye in the classroom. I heard students talking about a new messaging service called FaceQuartz."
Another common one is owl and pigeon mail, but this has it's disadvantages. Most birds are only able to travel across one world at a time, and with newer technology it's seen as old fashioned. In some worlds, large numbers of abandoned pigeons can be seen living aimlessly within cities.
For letters that need to be sent from world to world, mailship companies ride the Spiral's Skyways to deliver letters universe wide!
Whispers can be either telepathic communication, or verbal messages spoken into the wind, and carried to the reciever. However, this only works if the two have a close bond and consented to it. You wouldn't want to hear random voices in your head right???
The most common form of communication among young wizards is scribing. A wizard writes a "script" in their journal and the message appears in the recipient's journal.
There's always been a problem with distracted students trying to scribe under the desk were they think the professor won't see. "No scribing in class!" And "Don't fly and scribe!" are scoldings you'll hear often at Ravenwood.
For the young wizard whose too busy saving the Spiral from apocalyptic disasters, and playing councler to primordial, cosmological horrors, a simple mana ball usually work in a pinch. It's a shoddier crystal ball, you'll probably have bad connection, but it's better than nothing!
