This is a man who dearly, dearly misses his (or a) horse.
He may not feel much anymore, but he still uses a saddlebag in the Wastelands of the Fallout world, when he could get himself any old backpack.
Yet he has a saddlebag.

#I don’t know where it comes from in our family’s Lore so to say#but I tell my pets that they smell#especially when they’re being invasive or doing things that make me laugh#(invasive in a cute way I need to add)#’no go away! you smell!’#it’s more fun in Dutch (je stinkt!)#again no CLUE where it comes from#I say it to my nieces and nephews too lmao#and they just get organically sourced nicknames#my horse will sometimes have her ears backward and I started calling her Grouchy Smurf#which eventually turned into Smurf#which trickled down to my dad who I found calling his horse - happy cheerful cute as hell Fjara - Smurf#he’s got no idea where it comes from and that amuses me greatly#also again Fjara is far to … her personality is basically ‘hello! hi! yay!’#grouchy is in the very back of the description of its there at all#anyway#we’ve got you smell and Smurf#there’s also Curly Head (krullenbol) bc frizzy hair#Moppie which I don’t know how to translate…like dearie maybe?#lekker ding or …eh…hot thing? tasty? sounds SO weird now lmao#often occurs when she does something that makes me laugh#knappe merrie which could be good mare but good isn’t quite the word#it’s better than good#occurs when she’s being brave or does something very well#she knows bc her ears go forward when I say it ❤️#that’s all I can think of rn#oh! Just got sent the report of her treatment and if you wanna know how bad it was…
The black parts is what she filed down, left and right side.
Equine dentist and equine farrier really are jobs that should be protected in the Netherlands, and for some reason they’re not. Which makes it hard for owners to know who to trust and makes animals needlessly suffer. ☹️
Someone wasn’t having a good time, but her teeth were uneven and two had overgrown a lot (bc the last dentist hasn’t done that good a job…go figure). She ought be feel a lot better already, and the dentist is coming back in half a year for some more work.
#her jaw was LOCKED bc of that upper tooth at the end#no wonder she squeaked#no wonder she shook her head whenever I’d put a bridle on#I’m so glad I insisted on getting a dentist and I’m SO GLAS the one we used to have didn’t show up#and never returned calls#bc it means finding this one who is also a vet and looks at so much more#the first thing she did was feel around Lilja’s face and was like ‘ah! the tension is a lot less now. good!’#and also asking if I felt or noticed things while riding#the other guy never asked any of this#goddamn.#is it my naivety or is this way too common?

What a day!! Got to interview a couple about their four-horse team, completely consisting of Icelandic Horses! They compete at the international level and they invited me for a ride along 😍 They were so nice and I had a lovely day meeting everyone!! 🙌🏻

This is a picture from half a year ago, but it occurred to me yesterday while I was keeping Lilja’s head in place during her second treatment that these animals really have to trust us a hecking lot to just let us do these things to them.
She’s been drugged to stay calm and feel a bit less as her teeth get filed down from being like a staircase to nearly straight (it was bad, now it’s almost good). Machines that make loud noises and vibrate get put in her mouth and there’s weird smelling dust everywhere. Meanwhile her human is gently patting her hair and praising her for staying put, and half an hour later she’s back with Fjara and eating hay like nothing happened.
Same goes for the other 3 (namely Týra, Solita and Ieniemini), who just come walking up to you after all that, asking for a treat (and a brush bc it’s shedding season and they’re all itchy ladies).
I don’t really think about it often, but sometimes it’ll hit me how much they trust that we have their best interests at heart and they know this in their own way.
#brb crying but in a thankful way#anyway Týra is fully okay again (had a freshly broken tooth pulled)#Lilja can actually chew normally again now and with one more treatment she should be normally aligned again#same goes for Solita and Ieniemini!#Hviða and Fjara were both fully alright and only need yearly check ups now#Lilja…Lilja was off worst and had basically spent longer than I like hanging a jaw like a bulldog#lower jaw forward#she couldn’t put it back bc her teeth had been ground down wrong#I could tell at first from the weird squeaky noises she made while chewing#and then lots of shaking of her head and holding the bit#but now at this point in time 1. all her hooves are nice and regular and supporting 2. she can move her jaw normally and 3. her entire body#is physically okay (got checked by a physician yesterday)#she’s mentally happy as well (was a bit down since December (same Lil. same.)#I’ve been making an effort since for both her and me to spend more time with her#I wasn’t well and aside from it taking a toll on me it also took a toll on her#naively I didn’t think my absence would matter#stupidly even. my own sad brain got to me.#lesson learned: horses make happy chemicals in the brain. apparently humans can do that for their horses too.#and now I’m crying again. been doing that a lot lately🥲#anyway the trust my horses have for us are not something I take for granted and it’s humbling and an honour

Perhaps not entirely the place to post this, but…
Despite the volcanic eruption(s) in Iceland, it is completely safe to travel there!
The eruptions and the site around it are closely monitored.
You can see the glow from Reykjavík but it’s not nearly close enough to be an actual danger or hazard.
Papers and news outlets are making it out as though Iceland/Reykjavík are on fire. They’re not.
