Quick note from someone who reads way too much: Aravis is, indeed, a character from The Chronicles of Narnia. Specifically one of the main characters in The Horse and his Boy.
Hey question, is your cat named after anyone in particular?
I’m pretty sure she’s named after a character from a book in the Narnia universe?
I’m not certain- she was named Aravis by the people who originally found her. I believe she was picked up by a bookstore, so the fantasy name tracks.
When my ma and I adopted her, I figured, “hey, it’s a pretty name, shortens well, why not keep it?”
I mostly just call her Ari, but if I really need to get her attention, that’s when the full name comes out lmao
bonus: the bean herself

So I'm feeling sentimental today, so: This Is my dog Coco sometimes called Momo. We had to put her down back in September. She was with us over the course of nearly 13 years, 5 houses, 2 states and a couple of road trips along the east coast. Needless to say I have quite a few stories to tell in the future

Light Yagami
You know, whenever I read a Death Note fanfiction, the author usually apologizes for Light being out of character. I was thinking about that earlier, and I realized something. How can Light be out of character when we don’t really know who he is in the first place?
Now, I know that probably sounds weird. Let me explain.
There are two ‘Light’s’ that we know. One is Kira (with his memories of the Death Note), and Light (without remembering the Death Note).
Let me show you.

Kira ^^

Light^^
Now I know, I chose pictures of extreme circumstances, and Light and Kira usually look really similar, but I’m making a point. This point is that Kira and Light really aren’t the same person at all. Off the top of my head, here are some of Kira’s distinguishing personality traits:
Childish
Overconfident
Egotistical
Manipulative
Now, since fanfiction writers know Kira so well, I’ve found that he is usually what Light’s overall personality is modeled after. And when the writer makes Light’s character deviate too much from Kira’s, they usually feel as though they are making him ‘out of character.’ But the thing we constantly forget is that the real Light Yagami, the one without a Death Note, is someone that we don’t really know at all.
Think about it. There are only two times in the entire series when we see him without the influence of the Death Note, and that is at the very beginning of the story, and during the Yotsuba arc. Both of these times, not much information about him as a person is revealed. In the beginning, we see Light as a bored, studious high-schooler who thinks the Death Note is a load of crap. The notebook compels him to take it, so he does, and he writes the first name out of curiosity. We know, though it wasn’t shown, that at first, he was horrified by the notebook and what he’d done. From this information, we can presume that the end of this period of revulsion was when the Death Note won over, and he first started to become Kira.
Now, what we can accurately say about Light without the Death Note is that he was apathetic, rather uncaring about his family and friends, slightly manipulative (though he didn’t usually need to be), incredibly intelligent, rather unknowledgable about the world, mostly respectful towards women (but not really that interested in them), bored, and hardworking. From this information, we can tell that Kira is definitely an exaggerated version of all of Light’s flaws and goals, ignited and inflated by the Death Note’s power. It is highly likely that this is what the Death Note does to people: exaggerates their flaws, twists their morals, perverts their goals and dreams, and turns them into a monster.
Now, we know that when someone loses possession of the Death Note, every memory associated with it is erased. Therefore, all of the notebook’s power and control vanishes, and we finally get to see Light as he really is.
But do we really?
One of the first things I noticed about Light without his memories is that you almost never get to hear his thoughts, whereas when he has the Death Note, you see them constantly. As a result, we aren’t allowed to see what Light is like, even then. Hiding his thoughts could easily mean that the author doesn’t want us to see the real Light, and maybe he’s hiding him for a reason.
You see, there’s a lot about Light that isn’t for certain. Since we don’t know what he’s thinking, we don’t know how much of what he’s saying is true, or scripted, or a lie off of the top of his head. For all we know, that fight with L could have been nothing more than a pre-planned act of theatre (honestly though, they were both acting so overly dramatic, as though they were speaking to an audience)(which in fact, they were). For all we know, Light could get along fantastically with L normally, but not want to show it. For all we know, Light could be terrified of being labeled as Kira. He could be thrilled by the case and never want it to end. He could hate L, or love him, he could be lonely, or depressed, or angry, or happy or sad or content or excited or confused or even suicidal, and we would have no way of knowing. Maybe if we got to see what he was thinking, or how he acted/felt when he was alone (well, mostly, since he was handcuffed to L), then we would know him better as a person. But still, we have no way of knowing if he is any of these things.
Fortunately for the fanfiction writers, however, this also means that there is no way of proving that he isn’t any of these things. This is why whenever someone writes about him without the Death Note, I can’t find any reasonable criticism of their characterization. After all, what proof do we have that they aren’t right?
Personally, I think this makes Light one of the most fun characters to write about. It’s rare when the true personality of the main character is almost entirely up to interpretation, and it’s fascinating to read as well as write.
