Bourtange, Westerwolde NL
Fort Bourtange was started to be built during the Eight Years' War (1568-1648) in order to control the only road between Germany and the city Groningen. Surrounded by trough marshes the ford was adjusted and used successfully in many wars till 1851 when the surrounding swamps did dry out. The star fort was restored to its mid-18th-century state in 1960 and it is currently an open-air museum.
