My professor stated she wanted a real life drawing of ourselves and when I turned it in she said this is too cartoony, I know you can draw realistically. . My response... “that’s what I saw in the mirror, I realistically saw myself as a cartoon.” . Self portraits are a reflection of how an artist views themselves to be seen and cleverly reveals hidden truths to those with eyes unclouded by cracked rose tints to discover. . This was taken back in 2011, as one of the 1st assignments for my intro to digital photography 101 class. . This was actually the 1st time I got to use a DSLR camera. . Before that, I had only used film cameras, disposables, and my 1.3 maga pixel cell phone. . This was also the day I asked my roommates at the time 2 questions, what the word “selfie” meant and what the Instagram app was. (I honestly thought “selfie” was a slang word for a new drug that everyone was either on since people kept talking about it in joking matters and finally got an intro of what IG was) . The whole process and concept was completely foreign for me to be both behind and in front of the camera. . But as I look back connecting the dots from then till now, this has been the continuous work cycle that I can’t seem to escape out from. . Some days I feel cruised for the thrist, the drive, the hunger, the instantly, and the tenacious audacity of hyper ambition that I just can’t seem to shut off of seeking to climb the impossible mountain of chaos that drives most people up the walls. . On other days I feel blessed just to be able share these visual concepts to bring people together. . I may not be the best, the fastest, or the smartest, but all I know is that I am willing to continue to explore the journey of creativity even when I’m at my worst, even if I’m super slow at learning that it takes me forever, even when I don’t understand the basics and momentarily want to give up. . The willingness to surrender to a greater power (God, the universe, cosmic energy, nature, spiritual beings, electricity, aliens, creativity, whatever you believe in) of the unseen world that runs our reality and to fully submit to it is actually the process of letting go to kill the inner ego that always wants to control everything so that you can move more freely unbounded and unchained. . People are always happier when they are free to be themselves and to be who they are. . Happiness is a choice just as much as sadness and anger is. The only motivation you need is what you choose to tell yourself in the mirror. . Who you were yesterday is in the past, who are you now face to face, will be who you will be tomorrow. . Trippy question: when two mirrors face each other they reflect an infinite warp within itself; what happens when you face the mirror eye to eye? . Does it mirror back the infinite depths of your soul or the all different alter versions of your reality and being? . How you see yourself is how you show up in this world. . And if you don’t like what you see, know that you’re staring at the only person who can make that change. . Center your focus to grow the top qualities of a person you’d be proud to be. . It’s not about being that perfect someone, it’s about taking an honest look at yourself in the mirror to see you for who you really are and being ok with accepting who you are in this moment. . In that moment we can either choose to see what we want to see, we could tear ourselves apart of the things we don’t like, OR we can say, this is where I’m at and if I want to be over there doing all of this and that, I gotta make some changes starting with me. . I may not know all the answers and that’s ok, all I gotta focus on on the things that I know I can change. . Think tiny tiny tiny things because it’s those tiny things compounded over time that makes those major aka big shifts aka changes. .
