alright im going to bed but i was thinking about how much the jedi suck in the old sith wars era and i realized it’s probably because it was the old sith wars era. when you’re an institution dedicated to peace and harmony in all things, and you’re able to literally feel and interact with all life around you, getting pulled into a major conflict every few decades or so must produce some freaky intergenerational trauma.

another takeaway from that conversation is a hc i don’t think i’ve mentioned but it also isn’t probably a headcanon because it’s mentioned in-canon: revan had been warned about, and was aware of, the ‘darkness’ lurking in the unknown regions prior to formally intervening in the mandalorian wars. revan was aware of the toll war might have, and regardless of the outcome, they went into the conflict expecting they wouldn’t be a jedi by the time they were done. they initially didn’t plan on becoming a sith, but they knew that what they would have to do would be terrible, and they would no longer be welcomed by the order. at the end of the day, they decided that whatever fate befell them would be worth it if they could stop the mandalorians and save the republic.

no i wont shut up about this. so listen there’s a conversation between carth and bastila in kotor (i’ve been re-reading all the dialogue recently) where carth asks bastila if she ever considered joining the revanchist movement. it turns into a debate that mostly provides exposition, with carth as mr. republic and bastila as ms. jedi order, each establishing their institutions opinion of revan (because they’re the only window we have) while making and some allusions to the true sith in the unknown regions. but what it also does somewhat crucially is allude to how deep the schism between revan and the jedi council really was.
Tumblr media
bastila is basically established to be the teacher’s pet of the jedi order, who dealt with a lot of pressure from the council due to her skill at battle meditation and it’s usefulness in the fight against revan and malak. of course she goes through character development, but in this instance we’re ignoring all that right now. in this instance her choice of words here is not verbatim what she’s been told, but still likely reflects the opinions of the jedi council at large. the revanchists "threw away their lives foolishly," and the republic was impatient and "chose to walk the easy path rather than the path of wisdom.”
the disdain the jedi have for revan and the revanchists generally carries this energy of people who were complaining about ‘bad eggs’ and were then proven right; it’s continuously established in kotor 1 and 2 that the jedi council thought very little of the revanchists in general. but on the flip side, the very fact that this was her argument against intervening in the mandalorian wars reflects exactly why revan turned their back on the order. not just because the jedi turned their back on them, but also because ideals were more important than people. bastila only mentions the cost of lives when it came to revan’s empire, not when talking about the mandalorians. the revanchists were not sacrificing themselves to save the republic, they were throwing their lives away foolishly. the republic was not desperate for aid as it scrambled to combat a threat it couldn’t handle, it was walking the easy path. it’s that kind of mentality that revan felt from the jedi order as a whole that convinced them, and by extension their movement, that the jedi could no longer be relied upon to keep the galaxy safe. which, of course, led to them not only turning to the dark side, but turning against the republic and the jedi.
i’ve been thinking about it and honestly if they had received the support of the jedi council revan wouldn’tve become a sith. they might have fallen to the dark side and left the order, but they wouldn’t have turned their back of the jedi and republic entirely and tried to conquer it.
